Young Adult Ministry - Social Are you looking to grow in your faith while connecting with other young adults of the parish? We are striving to bring together young adult Catholics in Heard, Troup, and Meriwether counties to share in faith, service, and fun. You are invited to join us for our first social event to get to know each other at the Brickhouse Grille located at 141 Main Street in LaGrange on Wednesday, November 8th at 6:00 pm. If you plan on joining us, please contact the parish office before the end of the day Monday, November 6th at (706) 884-4224 or [email protected] so we can get a head count to reserve enough space at the Brickhouse. Disaster Relief and a Special Initiative to Assist Puerto Rico

When a natural disaster occurs in the United States and its territories, electronic donations may be made and parish collections may be directed to Catholic Charities USA, which assures us that 100% of donations go to the local organizations providing assistance. They and their member agencies respond to immediate emergency needs for such necessities as water, food, shelter and medical care, as well as to the long-term need to rebuild and recover after widespread destruction. Their address information follows: Catholic Charities USA, Online: www.catholiccharitiesusa.org, Mail: Catholic Charities USA, P.O. Box 17066, Baltimore MD 21297-1066, Phone: 800-919-9338. When disasters happen in other countries, collections and individual donations should be directed to Catholic Relief Services (CRS): Catholic Relief Services, Online: www.crs.org, Mail: Catholic Relief Services, P.O. Box 17090, Baltimore, MD 21297-0303, (Please indicate the specific relief effort in the memo line), Phone: 877-Help-CRS.

In response to the unprecedented destruction caused by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, several Puerto Rican clergy and laity within our Archdiocese are coordinating a special effort to help the local dioceses there. The group is working with Caritas Puerto Rico, a member agency of Catholic Charities, to collect funds and supplies to be shipped to Puerto Rico to assist in the relief effort. Cash donations from parish collections or individuals may be sent to the Chancery (Attention: Puerto Rico Relief) to defray the costs of shipping and support the work of Caritas. Desperately needed supplies include bottled water, non-refrigerated milk, canned food, batteries of all types, bed linens, baby food, and disposable diapers. Please contact Randy Ortiz (404-955-0684 or [email protected]) if your parish intends to participate and to arrange delivery. Volunteers are being sought at both the parish level to collect items and at the warehouse to prepare for shipping.

Feast Day of St. John Paul II - October 22

Karol Jozef Wojtyla, elected Pope on 16 October 1978, was born in Wadowice, Poland, on 18 May 1920. He was nine years old when he received his First Communion and eighteen when he received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Feeling called to the priesthood, he began his studies in 1942 in the clandestine major seminary of Krakow, directed by the Archbishop Adam Stefan Sapieha.

On 4 July 1958, Pope Pius XII appointed Father Wojtyla auxiliary bishop of Krakow, with the titular see of Ombi. Archbishop Eugeniusz Baziak ordained him in Wawel Cathedral (Krakow) on 28 September 1958. On 13 January 1964, Pope Paul VI appointed Bishop Wojtyla as Archbishop of Krakow and subsequently, on 26 June 1967, created him a Cardinal. Bishop Wojtyla took part in the Second Vatican Council (1962- 1965) and made a significant contribution to the drafting of the Constitution Gaudium et Spes.

On 16 October 1978, Cardinal Wojtyla was elected Pope and on 22 October he began his ministry as universal Pastor of the Church. His principal documents include 14 Encyclicals, 15 Apostolic

Exhortations, 11 Apostolic Constitutions and 45 Apostolic Letters. He also wrote five books: Crossing the Threshold of Hope (October 1994); Gift and Mystery: On the Fiftieth Anniversary of My Priestly Ordination (November 1996); Roman Triptych, meditations in poetry (March 2003); Rise, Let Us Be on Our Way (May 2004) and Memory and Identity (February 2005).

Pope John Paul II celebrated 147 beatifications, during which he proclaimed 1,338 blesseds, and 51 canonizations, for a total of 482 saints. Pope John Paul II died in the Apostolic Palace at 9:37 p.m. on Saturday, 2 April 2005, the vigil of Sunday in albis or Divine Mercy Sunday, which he had instituted. On 8 April, his solemn funeral was celebrated in Saint Peter's Square and he was buried in the crypt of Saint Peter's Basilica. John Paul II was beatified in Saint Peter's Square on 1 May 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI, his immediate successor and for many years his valued collaborator as Prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He was canonized in Saint Peter’s Square on April 27, 2014 by Pope Francis.

Online Registration Available For Parish Directory

Planning for our new parish directory is underway and our goal is to include everyone in the parish! In addition to the regular registration opportunities following Mass on specific weekends, you can now reserve your photography session online! Our online reservation site is located at https://booknow-lifetouch.appointment-plus.com/y7e6bqhg/, you can also find a link to the online reservation page on our church website at stpeterslagrange.net.

Some key points to remember when booking your appointment online:

1) You must enter the number of persons in your group first. A group is defined as each family that has a separate listing in the directory. If you have a multi-generational family and you also want a group photo of the entire family, you will need to list each group (separate listing) in subsequent time slots when registering. Please note that all members of a multi-generational family MUST arrive at the first time slot to accommodate enough time for each group photo session as well as the multi-generational photo session.

2) If your immediate family has more than 7 persons it will automatically allocate 2 slots. Remember each family group needs to have their own slot (the slot will correspond to a listing in the directory) Any family or friends that are not part of the parish that want a photo need a separate slot even though they will not be in the directory.

3) Each time slot denotes the arrival time only. Please allow up to one hour for each photo session.

There are explicit directions on the website for registration. If you have any difficulties with the online reservation site, please contact Debby Rand at 706-756-2695.

Morning/Evening Prayer While Father Tim is traveling on his pilgrimage to the Holy Land we will be praying the Morning or Evening Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours in place of our regular weekday Masses. The Liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Divine Office or the Work of God (Opus Dei), is the daily prayer of the Church, marking the hours of each day and sanctifying the day with prayer. Morning & Evening prayer will be led by prayerful lay people during Father Tim’s absence. A rosary will follow each of these prayers.

Directory Volunteers Needed

Parishioner Debby Rand is coordinating our new Parish Directory, and she needs your help! She is in need of volunteers from St. Peter’s as well as from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton for the following tasks: 1) Assist in putting together packets to

each Mass on October 21, October 28, November 4, and November 11.

3) Greet parishioners and check them in as they arrive to get their photos taken (many various dates)

4) Call parishioners that have not signed up yet, to ensure they get registered

If you can assist in any way, please contact Debby Rand at (706) 756-2695 or via email at [email protected].

The Church in Latin America/ The Church in Central and Eastern Europe/

World Missions Today’s second collection is a combination of three

national second collections - World Missions, the Church in Latin America, and the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. We are called to this Eucharistic

celebration – along with Catholics in every parish, chapel and church throughout the world – to recommit ourselves to the call we heard at baptism, to share our faith, to be missionaries. Let us pray at this Mass for all who long to hear the hope-filled, lifegiving message of Jesus’ love and salvation. Let us offer generous financial help in support of the service of priests, religious and lay catechists throughout the world. Please be extra generous as this collection will be divided between three very important needs.

Save the Date: First Friday Luncheon Our next First Friday Luncheon will be on November 3rd. The guest speaker will be Brian Maddy, Troup County Extension Agent. Out hosts will be Helen Bishop and Eileen Martin.
