On Friday 19th October we held an open air service to bless the wonderful rainbow bench which has been donated to us in loving memory of Alfie McDermott. Mr and Mrs McDermott and Harry were able to join us, along with Father Adrian Howell (Alfie’s Parish Priest), for what was a very special occasion - the sun shone, the readings and prayers (prepared by Juliette) were beautiful, and the children enjoyed sharing their favourite memories of Alfie, which we then hung up in the trees.

On Tuesday 20th November, some children from our wonderful choir took part in the Bournemouth Schools Carol Concert at the Pavilion. Although they are still too young to sing as part of the main concert, they were invited to perform one song all by themselves. They were brilliant and utterly delighted the audience!

In the final weeks of the Autumn Term, we

have been very busy enjoying the festive

season. Our Christmas Fair was a wonderful

community event – thank you to all those

who came along in support and visited the

children’s stalls. I am delighted to share the

news that we managed to raise £1,770 for

our playground development fund.

We had a wonderful time at our annual trip

to the Pantomime. This year we filled the

entire circle at the Pavilion and we made lots

of noise when St. Peter’s School was

announced! Well done to Maya R (3D) who

was chosen to go up onto the stage and took

part in the song ‘Baby Shark’ very bravely!

I have thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas Nativity Plays and can only imagine how proud you must be of your

children! Their singing and the joy that they conveyed to their audiences really was second to none. Look

out for our Nativity pictures in the Bournemouth Echo – they were taken straight after our Dress Rehearsals.

RECEPTION NEWS

This last half term in Reception has just flown by and we have been blown away by the progress the children

are making in all areas; in particular with their reading and writing. Thank you so much for all the phonics

practise you are doing at home, alongside the nightly reading – it makes a huge difference.

At the start of the half term, things took a rather sparkly turn! We came back to school to find that a Fairy

door had mysteriously appeared in each of the Reception classrooms with a note asking the children to help

poor Tina the Tooth Fairy. She said that children were forgetting how to look after their teeth and needed

some teaching.

Linked to our book, ‘The Tooth Fairy’ by Audrey Wood, we learnt what it takes to keep

teeth nice and clean and used our writing skills to make posters to teach other children

all about tooth hygiene. We loved the children’s enthusiasm to write their first full

sentences in this activity. They did so well. They also showed their mathematical

prowess by finding one less when extracting rotten teeth!

To congratulate them for their hard work, the children were invited to bring their

pyjamas to school and brush their teeth all ready for bed. Tina then paid us a visit whilst the children were

all fast asleep. She even left them a little treat in their special tooth bags.

Our next focus book, ‘On Sudden Hill’ by Linda Sarah and Benji Davies, is a heartfelt story about two friends

who face the problem of a third buddy joining their team. We had a big focus on talking about each

character’s feelings and how they could talk to each other to make them all happy in their friendships. We

related this to problems we may have in the playground

and how we can resolve conflict.

The boys in the story take their cardboard boxes out to

play. They have wonderful imaginations and they turn their

boxes into many exciting things. Our children have had lots

of opportunity to play in boxes and construct with boxes.

The whole year group has completed their best writing so

far linked to this topic!

In RE we have been looking at how Jesus grew up and was

once a child like us. We have looked at stories such as

‘Jesus gets lost in the temple’ and considered how this

shows that Jesus knew his role to spread God’s word.

We have also read the story of Jesus’ first recorded miracle in ‘The Wedding Feast of Cana.’ We learnt that

this showed Jesus’ love for his mother as he did what he was asked. Mary then told the servants to ‘Do what

he tells you.’ We have looked at how we must always listen for God’s message and make the right choices.

We wish you all a very restful Christmas, with love from The Reception Team. xx

YEAR 1 NEWS

This half term Year 1 started their exciting topic ‘Out of Africa,’ which is based around the story of ‘The Leopards Drum.’ The children are really enjoying this theme and have already had an opportunity to show off their creative skills and get their hands messy by making their own African drums. We spent some time researching real Djembe drums and where they originated from, then, using our knowledge, we designed our very own using different colours, patterns and shapes. We were amazed by the end results – the children did a super job! In our topic lessons the children have been using their knowledge of how to make an African drum to write some ‘how to’ instructions using some very bossy verbs!

In RE we have been focusing on the topic of Prayer, Feasts and Saints and we have enjoyed discussing some big questions such as ‘Who makes a good Saint?’ More recently, we have also been focussing on the season of Advent as we prepare for Christmas. In our classes we will be making our own Advent Wreaths and lighting candles to reflect on the significance of this time of year. To end the half term we have been busy preparing songs and dances ready to perform our Christmas Nativity which we are very excited to share with you all. Merry Christmas,

The Year 1 Team xx

YEAR 2 NEWS

We have been busy in Year 2 this half term finding out about the wonderful life of Meerkats. We began our topic by reading our Topic book ‘Meerkat Mail’ by Emily Gravett. We enjoyed learning about Sunny the meerkat and his adventures in the Kalahari Desert. After learning lots of interesting facts about where meerkats live, how they behave and what they look like, we went on an exciting trip to Marwell Zoo where we could observe the meerkats’ behaviour for ourselves. The children loved applying their Maths knowledge of tally charts to record what they saw the meerkats doing at the zoo. When we returned to school the children wrote a fantastic non-chronological report, incorporating all the facts they had learnt throughout the topic, as well as a wonderful recount of our events at the zoo.

In RE we have learnt about the lives of different saints and the qualities that a saint has. We discovered that the Rosary is a special prayer which helps to remind us of the important parts of Jesus’ life, through the eyes of his mother Mary. More recently we have been thinking about the season of Advent – in particular, we have discussed the meaning of the Advent Wreath and how it helps us to prepare for Christmas.

Page 6: St Peter’s Primaryprimary.st-peters.bournemouth.sch.uk/wp-content/... · based around the story of ‘The Leopards Drum.’ The children are really enjoying this theme and have

Both 2G and 2P have had their Class Masses this term, where we have been able to reflect on themes such as friendship and the special people in our lives. We were so impressed with how prayerful and reverent the children were in these Masses. We would like to thank you for all your hard work and support this half term. We wish you a very Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you in the New Year. Year 2 Team.

YEAR 3 NEWS

After the wonderful, whimsical surprise this term of the Year 3 classrooms turning into terrific tin forests, we started our topic by writing diary entries to document the shock and awe that we had felt when we had arrived at school. Following this we introduced our topic book ‘The Tin forest’ and both classes had the opportunity to build their very own Tin forests in boxes using foil in creative ways. (Thank you for all your recycling contributions to this!) After learning all about the old man in the story and his glum life living in a land full of junk, we thought about the hopes and dreams he may have. Both classes created some incredible dream jars with Plasticine to accompany their powerful emotive writing in role as the old man. Currently in Year 3 we are looking after our planet through recycling. We are so proud of the ideas the children have contributed and put into practice in order to protect God’s creation. This week, the children had a visit from the ladies at Bournemouth Borough Council. They learnt all about the recycling process works and developed their understanding the consequences of not being conscious of where we put our rubbish – something the children have taken a huge interest in helping with. Recently we also had the pleasure of Isabella’s Dad coming in to open our eyes to the use of plastic and the effects this is having on our world. Motivated by the impact of these talks, the children are currently designing powerful posters to open people’s eyes to the affects we are having on our planet!

During RE we have been thinking about Saints as people who show us how to be like Jesus. We have discussed the qualities of Saints and have written our very own Kennings about St Francis. We were also treated to some fantastic, reverent class worships this week by Josie and Abel. The children were so confident and made both their classes very proud.

Thank you all for everything you have provided this term to assist with the children’s learning – your support really helps us make our learning meaningful and it is much appreciated! We can’t wait to share the Christmas celebrations with you in our Nativity play this week. The Year 3 Team x _______________________________________________________________________________________

YEAR 4 NEWS

This half term, Year 4 have been enjoying their theme ‘The Ruthless Romans.’ During this topic, the children

have learnt about different emperors that ruled the Roman Empire and created a ‘Roman Ruler’s Hall of

Fame’ which detailed gruesome historical facts!

We have explored the many different models of ‘ruling’ which the Romans tried out over hundreds of years.

The children have enjoyed managing their reward system as a democracy by deciding who deserves a pom-

pom! We have also investigated through the life of Julius Caesar, what a dictatorship might be like to live in.

The children were shocked by how unfair it was, especially when they had worked hard, but weren’t fairly

rewarded with a pom-pom!

The highlight of our term has been our ‘Romans Day.’ The children

looked fantastic in their costumes and got into character straight

away by baking traditional Roman bread that we later feasted on

– it was delicious! The children also designed and made Roman

shields. We used them to practise a range of battle formations,

considering which were the most successful and why. Every legion

in the Roman Army had their own standard so, in their colour

groups, the children designed and made their own ‘standard’ to

symbolise their group.

In R.E. we have listened to the story of Martha and Mary. We unpicked the events of the story to identify

the good qualities that Mary showed whilst sat at Jesus’ feet. In each class, we discussed the importance of

making time to be with God in our busy, daily lives. Some of our children have taken their turn in planning

and delivering a class liturgy to help us become closer to God. We have shared some very though provoking

and personal themes within this time.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support throughout the Autumn Term and also to wish you a very Merry Christmas.

Year 4 Team.

Music News

It has been another incredibly busy term of music making in all year groups! It was wonderful to hear Year 4 playing

their recorders in both our Remembrance and Advent Assemblies. Year 4 have continued to learn the ukelele, and

with the proceeds from the sale of our “Prayer and Praise 2018” CD, we have been able to purchase 40 ukeleles for

the children to continue using after Christmas – an enormous thank you to all who purchased a CD, and to Soundstorm

Music Education for contributing significantly towards the cost of the instruments.

We now have 2 choirs running at lunchtimes – Mondays for Year 2, and Wednesdays for Year 3 and 4. The Year 2 choir

had their debut performance at the Christmas Fair. The Year 3 and 4 choir have been exceptionally busy, performing

at the Christmas Fair, as well as at the St Peter’s School Advent Service earlier this month. 25 of the choir were also

amazing ambassadors for the school, singing at the Pavilion Theatre in the Bournemouth Schools Carol Festival, where

they sang a special “guest item” on their own in front of all other participating Bournemouth Schools – a huge

congratulations to all involved, you sang beautifully!

We also now have an orchestra on Friday lunchtimes for any Year 3 and 4 children who wish to come along and play

their instrument. Could I please remind all parents that if your child is bringing their own instrument into school, it

MUST be clearly labelled with their name and class. Could I also remind parents of Year 3 and 4 children who have

piano/violin/drum/singing lessons that payment for next term’s lessons will be due via ParentPay as soon as we return

in the New Year.

All Classes now have their very own Prayer Bags which will be sent home with a different child each week. Thank you so

much to those families who have already had their turn and prepared a class worship with your child. All the teachers have

said what a wonderful experience these worship sessions have been for the whole class.

When your turn comes to have the Prayer Bag, please ask your teacher if you have any questions – there is no wrong way

to share the Prayer Bag and create your worship.

We hope it will be an enlightening and prayerful experience for you and your child!

PARKING COMPLAINTS

We are still receiving complaints from residents about perceived inconsiderate parking in the roads

surrounding our school, particularly Petersfield Road. Please may we ask you not to park across

residents’ driveways and not to park on double yellow lines. Following resident complaints we are

expecting to have more frequent visits from traffic wardens in the New Year.

Our school milk scheme is administered by Cool Milk, free for children

under the age of five.

From the age of five if you would like your child to continue having milk, you would need to register.

The cost is approximately 22p per day.
