Communal bins for general waste and recycling will be introduced to your area (shown overleaf) from August 16th, and you can start using them straight away. We will be removing your black wheelie bin and black box and we will only take waste away from the communal bins. Please be aware that this is an extension of the existing trial and that we are trying new ways to make your streets cleaner and clearer. Recycle little and often Communal bins Before After Why communal bins? We are trying to improve the way your street looks while providing a good waste removal and recycling service. We will place bins within a short distance of your home to enable you to put your waste in “Little and Often”. We believe this will improve the appearance and safety of your street and mean you will not have to store waste in your home, in your front gardens or on the pavement. How will communal bins help me? These bins are simple to use. You can use the bins any time you like. We suggest you use the bins little and often depositing small manageable amounts of waste at a time. If you are unable to take your waste to the bins we can help with an assisted collection. Please contact us by telephone or email, contact details are shown below. What if I have a big item such as a sofa or fridge? Please do not leave your large items on the roadside as we will collect them from your home. If you have mattresses, fridges, sofas or any other large item you can call us. We can take them away free of charge, if you receive any of the following benefits: Council tax, Housing Benefit, Income Support, Guaranteed Pension Credit. Please contact us by telephone or email, contact details are shown below. What impact will communal bins have on parking? Where possible, bins will be placed on wide pavements to prevent loss of parking spaces. Any potential road safety issues have been considered and addressed by the Council. How do we know that this new service will work? Until we try it in your street we don't know for sure that it will work but, what we do know is that it is working in other locations in the city. A recent resident survey showed that 100% of people thought their street was cleaner, 93% of people like using the bins and 96% want to keep the new service. Recycling tonnage has shown a 64% increase. We will monitor the service making changes where necessary, and we will ask you what you think of the new service. What will happen? Once the new bins are there, your old bins and black boxes will be taken away. The new general waste bins will be emptied at least three times per week and the recycling bins will be emptied once per week. We will check that we are emptying them regularly so they stay tidy. What if my communal bin is full? Communal bins will be emptied three times per week, this will be monitored but if they are full please contact us. Garden Waste Service If you use the Garden Waste collection service this will remain the same and will not change. If you have any waste questions If you have any waste questions, concerns or you need a large item of waste removed please contact us by telephone or email, contact details are shown below. If you would like this information in a different format, for example Braille, audio CD, large print, electronic, BSL DVD or community languages, please contact us.
