What is a 1:1 Program?A 1:1 mobile device program:

• Provides each student with a personal, portable device to enhance opportunities and redefine learning.

• It enables ‘anywhere, any time’ learning.

• Moves towards individualised learning, increased independence / self-initiated learning and extends learning beyond the classroom.

• Extends formal learning communities to include parents, siblings and other people important in students’ lives.

• Initiates global communication, collaboration and creative expression.

Why 1:1? How?The 21st century is increasingly complex, global and networked. This initiativehas improved the students’ ability to thrive and think critically in aninformation-rich world. It facilitates and fosters key 21st century skills instudents, including:

Why 1:1? How?

• Personalised learning – Allows wide-ranging opportunities forstudent differentiation according to needs – the potential forstudents to take learning in their own direction.

• Provides students with opportunities to choose the type ofproduct they construct to demonstrate their understanding.

• Enables students to learn and investigate independently,collaborate with peers and communicate their understandingsusing rich media.

• Is used for the purpose of enhancing and transforming studentlearning.

How is it better than using a shared bank of devices?

• Ensures all work is on the one device

• No waiting for a device to become available

How does a 1:1 Program fit with the Curriculum?

The West Australian Curriculum states:

“students will be expected to develop ICTcompetence as they learn to use ICT effectivelyand appropriately investigating, creating andcommunicating ideas and information at school,at home, at work and in their communities”.

These specifications are required so that:

All students have the same device allowing for easy deployment of apps, classroom management and equality.

Updated versions of applications in the app store won’t be backwards compatible and therefore will only work with iOS version 11 and above.

• An electronic portal has been set up to allow parents the option to purchase the iPad, cover and keyboard through our portal partner JB HI FI.

• Instructions for how to access this portal will be sent out once finalised

• JB HI FI has been recommended to us by our digital consultants at CEWA as the best option for purchasing the items that our parents require

• Allows for easy ordering and store pick up

• After Pay (pay later 12 months interest free)

• Purchase portal will open (Oct 8 – Oct 29) and parents will have 3 weeks to place their orders. This will ensure delivery to the school by early December.

Management of iPadApps

• In 2018 and 2019 the school will manage all the apps on the iPads through ZuluDesk

• This will simplify the classroom application and deployment of apps to the iPads

• Allows parents to rest easy knowing the school will handle the purchase and deployment of all apps to the iPads

Financial Information &

Insurance

• There will be a 50% reduction in the IT levy (currently $186) forparents with children in the 1:1 program

• An additional $50 will be added to the school fees for iPad appsand ZuluDesk

Parents are responsible for ensuring theirmobile device is insured and has akeyboard and suitable cover. (These canbe placed on your home and contentsinsurance policy).

Setting up your Device

• Student devices purchased through the portal will be delivered to the school in early December and available for students/parents to take home by the Thursday 6th December (last week of school for 2018). They can then be given as Christmas

presents if desired.

• IT technicians will be on hand to enrol Zuludeskonto the iPads – this will reset the iPad.

• There will be a Zuludesk parent information and demonstration session – Monday 4 February 2019

5:30-6:30pm in the Year 4 classroom.

Parent / Child Policy Suggestions

• It is your device, not your child’s

• Only allow your child to use their device in full view of an adult

• Develop a routine with time limits and consequences for inappropriate use

ZuluDesk (Parental Control System)

• Zuludesk is a relatively new program which has had great success in a number of primary 1:1 environments

• School receives profile and applies for licenses (one per device)

• Parents download parent app on phone, iPad or web browser (laptop/computer) which allows them to have more visibility over their child’s device

• Teacher has greater control over the management of devices in their classroom

• Trial in Year 4 in 2018 has been successful and will continue through 2019.

Common QuestionsQ: Will students still be taught spelling,handwriting and writing, etc. using paper andpencils for work?

A: Yes. The mobile device will be used as acomplementary tool in the classroom. Studentswill still write and complete activities with paperand pencils. Spelling and handwriting will still betaught as they are part of the Curriculum.

Q: When will students charge their devices?

A: Students will be required to charge theirmobile devices at home overnight so that thedevice is fully charged and ready for use at schoolthe next day. Students will not bring theirchargers to school.

Q: Will individual’s devices be used by otherstudents?

A: No. Only the owner of the device will be usingit. There will be times when students are workingin groups and will need to share content. This willbe done through wireless transfer of documents,photos, videos, etc.

Q: How and where will the devices be storedduring the day?

A: When not in use, mobile devices will bestored in each student’s tub inside theclassroom. At break times the classroom doorwill be locked to ensure devices are secure.

Q: Can the students take the devices home?

A: Yes. It is your device and must be taken homeevery night and used for homework if needed. Theymust be brought to school fully charged.

Q: Can student use of the internet be monitoredby the teacher/school?

A: Yes. As students will be connecting to theschool wireless to access the internet, theschool/CEWA internet filtering (Checkpoint) willbe applied to student internet access on theirdevices.

Common QuestionsQ: How will the school assess the 1:1 program toensure student achievement remains a focus?

A: The school will implement a rigorousstandardised testing schedule at the beginning andend of the school year, as well as teacherformative/summative assessments throughout, totrack student achievement. Our 2017/18 data atpresent is showing an upward trend.

Q: Will there be certain apps that students/ parents are required to download for use at school?

A: No. The school will enrol ZuluDesk on each child’s device and will push out the required apps to all students.

Q: What if we cannot afford the device?

A: If a family is not in a financial position to be able to afford a mobile device for their child they must make an appointment to see the Principal, Joanna Noonan, to discuss their individual circumstances. There are also payment plan options through JB Hi-Fi.

Common QuestionsQ: Can students/parents put their ownapps/software on their device?

A: Yes. It is your device and therefore the apps/software that youput on are up to you as a family. We recommend a discussionbetween parents and students when downloading new programsonto the device. It is important that parents manage the appsbeing chosen.

However, we would insist that you consider what areappropriate apps for a Year 4 student. We will insist that appsthat are not appropriate for school, are not to be used at schoolanytime during school hours and kept in a ‘home’ folder on thedevice.

Q: Will you keep us (parents) informed about theintegration of devices into the curriculum? How?

A: Yes, through teacher-parent communication –emails, parent nights etc. and also through studentsbeing able take their work home and show/explainto you what they are doing in class on the mobiledevices. A survey is sent out at the end of eachsemester to track parent feedback on the program.
