Pastor’s Pause: Rev. Bonnie Shively

“Becoming Imitators”

Brothers and sisters, become imitators of me and watch those who live this way – you can use us as models. As I have told you many times and now say with deep sadness, many people live as enemies of the cross. - Philippians 3:17-18 CEB The apostle Paul gave this advice - Look around for those who are following Jesus. Look around for those who are becoming more and more like Him, and find in them an example for you to follow. In other words, imitate the right people. Spend time with godly people, and let their attitudes and actions rub off on you. In the late 17th and early 18th Centuries, a semi-literate Italian craftsman, named Antonio Stradivari, designed and hand-crafted his now-famous Stradivarius violins. Today, those violins are priceless, selling for millions of dollars. Only about 500 of them still exist, and some of them have been submitted to the most intense scientific examination in an attempt to reproduce their extraordinary sound quality. However, no one has been able to replicate Stradivari's craftsmanship. The experts don’t know Stradivari’s technique for crafting his extraordinary violins. He never wrote it down. Instead, he passed his skill on to a number of apprentices who sat alongside Stradivari feeling the wood as he felt it to assess its length, its balance, and its timbre right there in their fingertips. That’s where we learn to follow Christ, as well – sitting alongside other Christ-followers. It doesn’t happen by studying books and manuals on the subject. It happens when we focus on Christ and get close to others who are doing the same. That’s why it is so important that we gather together in small groups, Worship services, and Bible Studies every week. You cannot grow in your relationship with Christ by staying home, studying books and watching TV preachers. You have to rub shoulders on a regular basis with other followers of Christ, so you can benefit from their example. If you want to become more and more like Christ, you have to imitate the right people. If you want to be all that God called you to be, if you want to become fully and completely like Christ, look ahead to Christ, the goal. And second, look around for the right examples, for godly examples.

Blessings,

Pastor Bonnie

SHADOW OF THE STEEPLE NEWS With the 150 food gift cards purchased this year, a total of 244 people were helped. Several recipients have expressed appreciation, saying the help was much needed. To purchase 150 gift cards at $30 each requires $4500 up front. Reserves from past years have been used, and efforts are underway to raise money for next Christmas. Donations may be given to any member of the Richardson class or to Dot Bradshaw. Checks should be made out to Shadow of the Steeple.

2019 ST. PAUL’S MEMORIAL FUND

Leon and Lucy Hurley ‘HUMANITARIAN SCHOLARSHIP’

Several years ago the Hurley family donated money to the St. Paul’s Memorial Fund and designated it for providing an award to several persons each year to assist in furthering their education. It specifically is intended for persons who are pursuing a degree in the field of “helping others”, be it nursing, social work, police work, EMT, etc. and/or other areas that would be helping the community. This year we will award up to four (4) $500.00 scholarships. You must be a recent high school graduate or currently enrolled as an undergraduate in college to be eligible to apply for this scholarship. The applicant should also meet one of the following criteria:

1. Be a member of St. Paul’s UMC or other church. 2. Have a parent or grandparent as a member of St. Paul’s UMC. 3. Has participated in the St. Paul’s UMC Youth ministries or another church youth activity/program.

Applications for this scholarship are available at Cambridge South Dorchester and at North Dorchester high school guidance offices and/or can be picked up in the St. Paul’s UMC church office on Maryland Ave. Ask for the church secretary Toni Insley, Monday – Friday, 10am – 2pm. Previous recipients may apply again. Applications are due by April 1, 2019. Winners will be notified by May 1, 2019. Winners will be announced in church on Sunday, May 19th. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact: Scott Daniels Memorial Fund Treasurer 443-521-4577 [email protected]

Easter Flower Announcement

The Gleaners Sunday School class of St. Paul’s UMC has announced that they will no longer be taking orders or selling flowers for the Easter and Christmas seasons. Due to the increase in price of these seasonal flowers, and the limited number of volunteers available for these events, it is no longer in the best interest of the group to continue with this tradition. The congregation is, however, invited to purchase flowers for these holidays, and donate them to help beautify our church. Floral arrangements and potted flowers are acceptable. Please contact the church office at (410) 228-1424 or [email protected] for more information.

HEALTH TIPS ON the Germiest Places Outside Your Home With flu season in full swing, we need to be extra vigilant about protecting ourselves. Here are germy places and ideas for protection. 1. Hand dryers in public restrooms--get germs from toilet spray. Use paper towels or carry hand sanitizer. 2. Swimming pools. Kids carry up to 10 grams feces on their bottoms. Avoid public pools or shower carefully after using. 3. Gyms. Bacteria collects on skin from everything you touch, transfers to equipment. Species found in restrooms are found on gym equipment. 4. Restaurant menus. Some have 100 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. Clean hands after ordering. 5. Lemon wedges on water glasses. Nearly 70% found with disease-causing bacteria, including E coli. 6. Water fountains very germy. Carry own water bottle. 7. Soap dispensers loaded. Scrub 20 seconds or carry hand sanitizer. Restroom door handles very germy. Use paper towels to turn knob or use hand sanitizer. 8. Shopping carts. Use wipes. 9. Elevator buttons. Push with elbow or a pen, use stairs or use hand sanitizer. 10. Hotel rooms. TV remote dirtiest after bedside lamp switch, telephone, hair dryer, bedspread. 11. Playground. Slides, swings, sandbox dirtiest. Use hand sanitizer or wipes. 12. ATMs. Flu virus can live several hours on a dollar bill. Press buttons with a pen.

Finance Team Report

We would like to bring you all up to date on some issues regarding your church’s finances. Our team did

several important things at the end of last year. We prepared a budget for St. Paul’s to present to the Council

and approve at the Charge Conference in November. We also did a small pledge/commitment campaign for

the first time in many years. We want to give you some feedback on those at this time.

PLEDGE CAMPAIGN

The pledge/campaign went well for the first attempt in years. We had a total of 36 responses and a total pledge

of $141,550.00. We are pleased with this activity and response. Since our budget for this year is $279,110.82,

the pledge amounted to about one-half of our needs. I know that many give but did not participate in the

pledge for one reason or another so our prayer is that the other half will be met and then some. God will

provide, just trust Him.

BUDGET

Last year our budget was $285,894.00 and we projected a deficit of around $21,000.00. As it turned out we

had ‘only’ a $11,000.00 deficit that we carried. As always, fuel cost, insurance and staff costs go up but we

did well to keep costs down and had some fund raising programs to help with the operating costs. Without

going into details the major areas of the budget are as follows. (pennies rounded off)

Anticipated income (a guestimate from previous years) $261,415.00

Expenses

Personnel (salaries, pensions, hlth, taxes, etc) $161,610.00 Property (repairs, heat, utilities, insurance, etc.) $66,100.00

Supplies $11,200.00

Programs $6,050.00

Conference (Conference Apportionment &

District Office support) $33,550.00

TOTAL EXPENSES $279,110.00

ANTICIPATED DEFICIT ($17,695.00)

(If you want to see a more detailed budget then contact the church office or a member of the Finance Team.)

As you can see, we are operating in a deficit budget the same as last year and expecting God to provide

through his congregation, trusting in Him. Please prayerfully consider your giving as God has provided to

you.

As always, if you have any questions or ideas about the church’s finances please direct them to the Finance

Team. You can come to a meeting that is scheduled every 3rd Monday of the month or email questions to

[email protected] or talk to a Finance Team member.
