November 2017 The Epis le
Americans celebrate Thanksgiving in a few weeks as a holiday ritual. Usually my husband and I travel to San
Antonio to catch up with relatives and friends we haven’t seen in a while, and enjoy a feast, football, and play
games outside if the weather is agreeable. Of course, that is up for change with my
family. One year we made orange and brown paper turkey table decorations on
Thanksgiving eve. Then some of our family got up early on Thanksgiving Day and
headed to a children’s center to help cook a turkey meal and then eat the meal in little
chairs at little tables with the children who had a parent in jail. Another year we had
some soldiers from a nearby Army base over for the feast. They were away from family
and we were their sponsor family. They came dressed in their camouflage, and we all
had a good time.
You may have a Thanksgiving tradition you stick to like glue or maybe you’re more of a
free spirit that serves up a Thanksgiving meal for strangers or simply takes the day to
stay home and thank God for simple food and rest. Maybe you carry out the ministry of
St. Paul’s food pantry and provide Thanksgiving food for the needy in advance of the
holiday. Some of you work jobs on Thanksgiving Day to serve everyone else.
Here at St. Paul’s, we have a Thanksgiving tradition and it’s every Sunday during
worship! Along with hearing the Word proclaimed, we have a holy feast called the
Eucharist which means “thanksgiving” in Greek. We also call this Holy Communion.
We come by faith and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, given with
bread and wine. We can be thankful that in in this sacrament we receive forgiveness,
life, and salvation.
God blesses us with food for the body and the soul! As the After School kids pray before
every meal:
God is great, God is good, let us thank God for our food. Amen!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Pastor Nancy

HARVEY FLOODING RECOVERY The Church Offices, Conference Room, and Music Library have all been painted. All the old flooring has been removed and hauled away. The new floor tile is here and ready to be installed on November 6, 2017. Please remember to help St. Paul’s by making sure the doors are locked if you are the last one leaving on Sunday morn-ing or if you are at church for a special function. We recently had a theft in the storage containers (in parking lot).
Veterans Day While war and conflict between nations and people are unfortunate aspects of our human nature and weakness, we pray God will continue to reveal and shine a light on God’s paths and ways of peace, justice, reconciliation and mutual concern. Give thanks and recognition for the sacrifice of men, women and young adults who choose to serve – and have served in the past – our country in pursuit of global peace, justice and the well-being of all God’s people. On Sunday November 12th our Veterans will receive a special blessing during worship.

Young Adults in Global Mission The ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission program invites ELCA young adults ages 21-29
into a transformative, year-long journey in international service. As they offer them-
selves in service, ELCA young adults are shaped by the witness of our global neighbors.
They share in the journeys of companion churches and organizations in one of nine
countries around the world.
A year of service through the Young Adults in Global Mission program invites young
adults to become the hands and feet of Jesus in the world, providing critical support to
ministries and projects in communities of need. It also invites volunteers into a journey
of self-reflection, providing space to consider their sense of identity, God’s work in the
world, and their place within it all. Applications for the program open on December 1, and are due Feb. 15 each year,
for service beginning that same August.
Young adults serve in the spirit of accompaniment, walking alongside global companions in a manner that practices mutuality,
interdependence and solidarity. Areas of service include, but are not limited to, health and development, congregational
ministry, human rights, education, homelessness, addiction recovery, women’s issues and
children and youth. All site placements provide opportunities for young adults to confront
issues of wealth and poverty, racial privilege, economic disparity and globalization,
all through the lens of faith.
Candidates for Young Adults in Global Mission apply to the program at-large rather than
to a specific country. Applicant preferences are taken into account but the final decision
about where volunteers serve is made by Global Mission staff and YAGM country
coordinators in mid-April. Current YAGM country programs include: Argentina Uruguay,
Australia, Cambodia, Central Europe, Jerusalem/West Bank, Madagascar, Mexico,
Rwanda, Senegal, Southern Africaand United Kingdom
We are a church that believes God is calling us into the world – together. Come, imagine
yourself in the world! For further information contact YAGM at 1-800-638-3522, ext. 2446
