Pundits are predicting so many changes in the healthcare world as we currently know it, but if the fi rst round of rollouts are any indication, the changes are small as everyone holds on to their current healthcare plan. Th at same trend is holding true for the new senior care rollout.

However, there will be changes; they will be felt over time, and St. Paul’s is preparing for them.

Staff have been actively engaged in a number of programs centered on the future formation of senior services, and in several cases have been instrumental in the development of those programs. Our advocacy work in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. continues to bring the needs of seniors to California's elected offi cials for them to take legislative action.

Why do we champion the needs of seniors? It is because St. Paul’s Board and leaders are committed to ensuring that the concerns of seniors are blended into the rarifi ed air of government.

You will see and hear more of this innovation at our Annual LUV Gala on Saturday, August 23rd. Please join us.

St. Paul's Super Volunteers, Sonia Simons and Lyn Riggs

Volunteers Basking in a Perfect Spring Day

St. Paul’s was pleased to host a Volunteer Appreciation Picnic on April 12th at St. Paul’s Children’s Park. Th is year’s theme was “Rock ‘n’ Roll” and over 50 volunteers and guests arrived for some fun in the sun. Th ere were plenty of opportunities to win gift baskets full of goodies. Tasty food prepared by St. Paul's Dining Services department was served, games were played, prizes were won and plenty of "thank yous" were handed out.

“It is a pleasure to be involved with St. Paul’s and to make a diff erence. I always look forward to the annual Volunteer Picnic; you know you are going to have a great time! Th is year we rocked and rolled to some wonderful music that brought back fond memories, mingled with the other volunteers, played games and enjoyed delicious food. Th ank you again for making it a joy every time we visit St. Paul’s.” – Janifer Rizzuto, Volunteer

"I had such a great time at the party for the volunteers. I loved all the fun games, especially the relay game with food on the trays. Th e people really made the diff erence; everyone was caring, magnifi cent and we just had a blast! Th e root beer fl oats were awesome; I'm sure I had at least two maybe three. I enjoy being part of a group that helps others. Everyone at St. Paul's is welcoming and appreciates me when I walk in that door. It makes you feel proud to be there." – Valerie Joyce, Volunteer

Do you, as an individual or a group, have

Japanese Delegation Learns from St. Paul's

St. Paul's Staff , Rotarians, and the Japanese VTT Pose for a Picture

On April 8th, a Vocational Training Team (VTT) arrived at St. Paul’s from a Japanese Rotary Club (District 2770). VTT is a healthcare team that spent a week learning about health and supportive care for seniors in San Diego. Like San Diego, Japan has a large component of elderly that need medical and other services.

Th e six members of the team are healthcare workers and a Rotarian team leader. Th eir disciplines include care management, medical radiographer, care worker, physician, and real estate management.

While visiting St. Paul’s, VTT learned about our intergenerational program, assisted living and memory care programs, independent living, skilled nursing care, and St. Paul's PACE (Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly).

St. Paul’s staff also had the opportunity to learn about some of the benefi ts and challenges that health and social service professionals face in Japan. “It was an honor to welcome the Japanese visitors to St. Paul’s,” says CEO Cheryl Wilson. “We enjoy sharing how we serve seniors and learning how other countries value and care for their senior populations.”

Intergenerational Valentine's Day Senior PromSt. Paul's Villa Residents hosted an Intergenerational Valentine's Day Dance for 75 seniors from the McColl Health Center, the Manor, and Senior Day. Th e seniors were joined by more than 20 volunteers from local high schools and universities for a fun celebration of Valentine's Day, complete with music and dancing!

"Th e Valentine's day dance was one of the best things I have been to in my life. It was a wonderful opportunity for our men to learn how to dance from some of the best, and is something we hope

to continue to be involved with in the near future." - Tyler Banks, University of San Diego Student

"It was so nice to see my friends and young men dance and have fun on Valentine's Day," saidAlice Danskin, Villa Resident. "I'm looking forward to next year's event!"

Improvements to Memory Care and Skilled Nursing

PACE and Senior Day CollaborationAs of April 1st, seniors receiving Medicare-MediCal benefi ts in San Diego County were automatically enrolled in one of four managed care organizations to receive their future medical care and social services. Th e goal is to enable each senior to live independently in the community. Th is program is managed by the State and is called Cal MediConnect. St. Paul’s PACE is one of the chosen plans in San Diego and expects to see additional growth in the coming months.

St. Paul's PACE Reasner seniors began coming to the Senior Day Program in mid-May to accommodate increased enrollment. Senior Day serves seniors with beginning to moderate stages of memory loss in a social and safe environment. Th is partnership allows both programs to grow while providing socialization and fun in a safe environment. Th e Senior Day Program started the year with 20 Participants and with the addition of PACE, we anticipate the number of Participants to double by the end of the summer. Senior Day can serve up 60 enrolled guests.

St. Paul’s has taken incremental steps to improve the physical environment for memory care and skilled nursing seniors in the Memory Care Program and McColl Health Center, respectively.

Because of Memory Care program growth, we needed to expand the dining and activity areas. Th e purpose is to enrich the engagement of Residents and their families in a more intimate and robust environment.

We’ve added an additional dining space by converting two residential rooms into a unique dining experience. Th e next phase is to expand the current dining room.

Th e McColl Health Center improvements are plenty and profound:

•New skylight in lobby and new luminous sky ceiling at Nurses Station•New Nurses Station - cabinets and resized counters•New alcoves for expanded seating areas•New lighting at lobby, Nurses Station and corridor•New fi nishes – fl oor, walls and ceiling, lighting•New expanded dining room entry with automatic door and Bistro remodel•New windows (at each side of bay window)•New lighting, fi nishes, fl oor, walls and ceiling•Additional space for family gathering area

We encourage you to attend our grand opening and dedication on June 26 from 3:30 - 5:30pm. RSVP to Pam Harbin at 619-239-6900. We thank all the donors who have made these projects come to life for our Residents.

Active Volunteers - January 1 - April 30, 2014

Childcare continues to expand its census and provide a safe and engaging environment for children. With over 75 children in our program, we strive to provide the best care possible.

Here are a few ways that we have improved and plan to grow:

•New library space for listening and learning development•Light construction for larger classroom spaces for our children to discover and play. Th is will help us better serve our current families as children turn 2 and “age out” of the infant program, while still allowing us to accommodate our older preschool children that will be impacted by California’s new Kindergarten cutoff age•A planned new shade structure in the park. Th e structure will create a larger shaded area for the children to play under as well as a more defi ned space for some of our annual childcare events that take place in the park throughout the year•A new gate and railing on the upper playground at the top of the ramp to fully enclose the play area.

St. Paul’s students continue to provide joy for seniors in the Intergenerational Day Program and others around the St. Paul’s campus.
