THE ORDER OF SERVICE THE GREETING

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Let us pray:

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

God has revealed to us through the Spirit what he has prepared for those who love him; for the Spirit searches everything. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, seeking his forgiveness.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

2

Glory be to him who loved us, washed us from each spot and stain; glory be to him who bought us, made us kings with him to reign; glory, glory, glory, glory to the Lamb that once was slain

3

Glory to the king of angels, glory to the church’s king, glory to the king of nations, heaven and earth, your praises bring; glory, glory, glory, glory to the King of Glory bring.

4

‘Glory, blessing, praise eternal!’ thus the choir of angels sings; ‘Honour, riches, power, dominion!’ thus its praise creation brings; glory, glory, glory, glory, glory to the King of kings!

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Let us pray.

O God, the fount of wisdom, you have revealed to us in Christ the hidden treasure and the pearl of great price: grant us your Spirit’s gift of discernment, that, in the midst of the things of this world, we may learn to value the priceless worth of your kingdom, and be ready to renounce all else for the sake of the precious gift you offer. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

The people are seated for the readings and psalm.

THE FIRST READING Genesis 29.15-28 15 Then Laban said to Jacob, ‘Because you are my kinsman, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?’ 16Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17Leah’s eyes were lovely, and Rachel was graceful and beautiful. 18Jacob loved Rachel; so he said, ‘I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.’ 19Laban said, ‘It is better that I give her to you than that I should give her to any other man; stay with me.’ 20So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her. 21 Then Jacob said to Laban, ‘Give me my wife that I may go in to her, for my time is completed.’ 22So Laban gathered together all the people of the place, and made a feast. 23But in the evening he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob;

Page 4: St Paul’s Cathedral€¦ · finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. 47 ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into

4

and he went in to her. 24(Laban gave his maid Zilpah to his daughter Leah to be her maid.) 25When morning came, it was Leah! And Jacob said to Laban, ‘What is this you have done to me? Did I not serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?’ 26Laban said, ‘This is not done in our country—giving the younger before the firstborn. 27Complete the week of this one, and we will give you the other also in return for serving me for another seven years.’ 28Jacob did so, and completed her week; then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel as a wife.

Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.

PSALM: 105.1-11

1 O give thanks to the Lord and call upon his name: tell among the peoples what things he has done.

2 Sing to him, O sing praises: and be telling of all his marvellous works.

3 Exult in his holy name: and let those that seek the Lord be joyful in heart.

4 Seek the Lord and his strength: O seek his face continually.

5 Call to mind what wonders he has done: his marvellous acts, and the judgements of his mouth,

6 O seed of Abraham his servant: O children of Jacob his chosen one.

7 For he is the Lord our God: and his judgements are in all the earth.

8 He has remembered his covenant for ever: the word that he ordained for a thousand generations,

9 The covenant that he made with Abraham: the oath that he swore to Isaac,

10 And confirmed it to Jacob as a statute: to Israel as an everlasting covenant,

11 Saying ‘I will give you the land of Canaan: to be the portion of your inheritance’.

Chant: Plainsong

THE SECOND READING Romans 8.26-39 26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. 27And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28 We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. 29For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a

Page 5: St Paul’s Cathedral€¦ · finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. 47 ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into

5

large family. 30And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified. 31 What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else? 33Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. 35Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36As it is written, ‘For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered.’ 37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Please stand Matthew 13.44-58

Please repeat the Alleluias after the Cantor, then as indicated

The meek he will guide in the path of justice: and teach the humble his ways. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Hear the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 44 ‘The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45 ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; 46on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. 47 ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and caught fish of every kind; 48when it was full, they drew it ashore, sat down, and put the good into baskets but threw out the bad. 49So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous 50and throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Page 6: St Paul’s Cathedral€¦ · finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. 47 ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into

6

51 ‘Have you understood all this?’ They answered, ‘Yes.’ 52And he said to them, ‘Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.’ 53When Jesus had finished these parables, he left that place. 54 He came to his home town and began to teach the people in their synagogue, so that they were astounded and said, ‘Where did this man get this wisdom and these deeds of power? 55Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all this?’ 57And they took offence at him. But Jesus said to them, ‘Prophets are not without honour except in their own country and in their own house.’ 58And he did not do many deeds of power there, because of their unbelief.

For the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The people are seated at the invitation of the preacher.

THE NICENE CREED

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church:

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

For he whom Jesus loved has truly spoken: the holier worship which he deigns to bless restores the lost, and binds the spirit broken, and feeds the widow and the fatherless.

3

Follow with reverent steps the great example of him whose holy work was doing good; so shall the wide earth seem our Father’s temple, each loving life a psalm of gratitude.

THE PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS

Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation: through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings to your glory and for the service of your kingdom: Blessed be God forever.

THE HOLY COMMUNION THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is right to praise you, faithful God, always and everywhere, for with your only begotten Son and life-giving Spirit, you are the one true God from everlasting to everlasting. At the dawn of time you wrought from nothing a universe of beauty and splendour, bringing light from darkness and order from chaos. You formed us, male and female, in your image, and endowed us with creative power. We turned away from you but you did not abandon us. You called us by name and searched us out, making a covenant of mercy, giving the law, and teaching justice by the prophets.

Page 9: St Paul’s Cathedral€¦ · finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. 47 ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into

9

And so we praise you, joining with your faithful people of every time and place, singing the eternal song:

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY LORD Congregational Mass – Michael Leighton Jones (b.1947)

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

When the fullness of time was come, you sent your Son to be born of Mary. Bright image of your glory, he learnt obedience to you in all things, even to death on a cross, breaking the power of evil, freeing us from sin, and putting death to flight. You raised him from death, exalting him to glory, and the new day dawned. On the night he was betrayed your Son Jesus Christ shared food with his friends, his companions on the way. While at table he took bread, blessed, and broke it, and giving it to them, said: ‘Take, eat; this is my body.’ He took a cup of wine, and, giving thanks, he gave it to them, and said, ‘This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Do this in remembrance of me.’ Therefore, living God, as we obey his command, we remember his life of obedience to you, his suffering and death, his resurrection and exaltation, and his promise to be with us for ever. With this bread and this cup we celebrate his saving death until he comes. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Page 10: St Paul’s Cathedral€¦ · finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. 47 ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into

10

Accept, we pray, our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, and send your Holy Spirit upon us and our celebration that all who eat and drink at this table may be strengthened by Christ's body and blood to serve you in the world. As one body and one holy people, may we proclaim the everlasting gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom, with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory is yours, eternal God, now and for ever.

Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray, each in our own language, Notre Père..., Padre nuestro..., Vater unser..., 我們在天上的父…,

Bapa kami..., E to matou Matua..., 天の父よ… Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

AGNUS DEI Congregational Mass – Michael Leighton Jones (b.1947)

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us your peace.

THE INVITATION

The gifts of God for the people of God. Jesus Christ is holy, Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

MOTET

The Call – Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)

Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life: such a Way, as gives us breath: such a Truth, as ends all strife: such a Life, as killeth death. Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength: such a Light, as shows a feast: such a Feast, as mends in length: such a Strength, as makes his guest. Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart: such a Joy, as none can move: such a Love, as none can part: such a Heart, as joyes in love.

THE SENDING OUT OF GOD’S PEOPLE THE POST-COMMUNION PRAYER Said by the president and people

Gracious God, we thank you that in this sacrament you assure us of your goodness and love. Accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving and help us to grow in love and obedience that we may serve you in the world and finally be brought to that table where all your saints feast with you for ever.

Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory.

THE DISMISSAL HYMN

2

O let me feel thee near me: the world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, and tempting sounds I hear; my foes are ever near me, around me and within; but, Jesus, draw thou nearer, and shield my soul from sin.

3

O let me hear thee speaking in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will; O speak to reassure me, to hasten or control; O speak, and make me listen, thou guardian of my soul.

4

O let me see thy footmarks, and in them plant mine own; my hope to follow duly is in thy strength alone: O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end; and then in heaven receive me, my Saviour and my Friend.
