O Lord our God, you are always more ready to bestow your good gifts upon us than we are to seek them; and more willing to give than we desire or deserve: in our every need, grant us the first and best of all your gifts, the Spirit who makes us your children. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

FIRST READING 2 Samuel 5.1-5, 9-10

Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron, and said, ‘Look, we are your bone and flesh. 2For some time, while Saul was king over us, it was you who led out Israel and brought it in. The LORD said to you: It is you who shall be shepherd of my

Page 3: St Paul’s Cathedral · 3 people Israel, you who shall be ruler over Israel.’ 3So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron; and King David made a covenant with them

3

people Israel, you who shall be ruler over Israel.’ 3So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron; and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel. 4David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned for forty years. 5At Hebron he reigned over Judah for seven years and six months; and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah for thirty-three years. 9David occupied the stronghold, and named it the city of David. David built the city all around from the Millo inwards. 10And David became greater and greater, for the LORD, the God of hosts, was with him. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God.

PSALM 48

At 8.00am and 9.00am the reader and congregation say alternate verses At 10.30am please sing the response after the cantor, then as indicated

1 Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised: in the city of our God. 2 High and beautiful is his holy hill: it is the joy of all the earth. 3 On Mount Zion, where godhead truly dwells,

stands the city of the Great King: God is well known in her palaces as a sure defence. Response

4 For the kings of the earth assembled: they gathered together and came on; 5 They saw, they were struck dumb: they were astonished and fled in terror. 6 Trembling took hold on them, and anguish: as on a woman in her travail; 7 Like the breath of the east wind: that shatters the ships of Tarshish. Response

8 As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts: in the city of our God, which God has established for ever.

9 We have called to mind your loving-kindness, O God: in the midst of your temple.

10 As your name is great, O God, so also is your praise: even to the ends of the earth.

11 Your right hand is full of victory—let Zion’s hill rejoice: let the daughters of Judah be glad, because of your judgements. Response

12 Walk about Zion, go round about her, and count all her towers: consider well her ramparts, pass through her palaces; 13 That you may tell those who come after that such is God:

our God for ever and ever, and he will guide us eternally. Response

SECOND READING 2 Corinthians 12. 2-10 2I know a person in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows. 3And I know that such a person—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows— 4was caught up into Paradise and heard things that are not to be told, that no mortal is permitted to repeat. 5On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. 6But if I wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I will be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think better of me than what is seen in me or heard from me, 7even considering the exceptional character of the revelations. Therefore, to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given to me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated. 8Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, 9but he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.’ So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.

Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God.

GOSPEL READING Mark 6.1-13

At 10.30am, the cantor introduces the acclamation, then all repeat.

Alleluia! Alleluia! The Spirit of the Lord is upon me: he sent me to bring Good news to the poor. Alleluia! The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Mark: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ!

Jesus left that place and came to his home town, and his disciples followed him. 2On the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, ‘Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! 3Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?’ And they took offence at him. 4Then Jesus said to them, ‘Prophets are not without honour, except in their home town, and among their own kin, and in their own house.’ 5And he could do no deed of power there,

Page 5: St Paul’s Cathedral · 3 people Israel, you who shall be ruler over Israel.’ 3So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron; and King David made a covenant with them

5

except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. 6And he was amazed at their unbelief.

Then he went about among the villages teaching. 7He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. 8He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; 9but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. 10He said to them, ‘Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. 11If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.’ 12So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. 13They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

PSALM 123

Sung by the Choir 1 Unto thee lift I up mine eyes:

O thou that dwellest in the heavens. 2 Behold, even as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters,

and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress: even so our eyes wait upon the Lord Our God, until he have mercy upon us.

Page 6: St Paul’s Cathedral · 3 people Israel, you who shall be ruler over Israel.’ 3So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron; and King David made a covenant with them

6

3 Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us: for we are utterly despised.

4 Our soul is filled with the scornful reproof of the wealthy: and with the despitefulness of the proud.

FIRST READING 2 Samuel 5.11-13, 17-25

11 King Hiram of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar trees, and carpenters and masons who built David a house. 12David then perceived that the LORD had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel. 13 In Jerusalem, after he came from Hebron, David took more concubines and wives; and more sons and daughters were born to David.

17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, all the Philistines went up in search of David; but David heard about it and went down to the stronghold. 18Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the valley of Rephaim. 19David inquired of the LORD, ‘Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?’ The LORD said to David, ‘Go up; for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.’ 20So David came to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there. He said, ‘The LORD has burst forth against my enemies before me, like a bursting flood.’ Therefore that place is called Baal-perazim. 21The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his men carried them away. 22 Once again the Philistines came up, and were spread out in the valley of Rephaim. 23When David inquired of the LORD, he said, ‘You shall not go up; go round to their rear, and come upon them opposite the balsam trees. 24When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then be on the alert; for then the LORD has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.’ 25David did just as the LORD had commanded him; and he struck down the Philistines from Geba all the way to Gezer.

SECOND READING 2 Corinthians 13.4-13

4For he was crucified in weakness, but lives by the power of God. For we are weak in him, but in dealing with you we will live with him by the power of God. 5 Examine yourselves to see whether you are living in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless, indeed, you fail to pass the test! 6I hope you will find out that we have not failed. 7But we pray to God that you may not do anything wrong—not that we may appear to have passed the test, but that you may do what is right, though we may seem to have failed. 8For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. 9For we rejoice when we are weak and you are strong. This is what we pray for, that you may become perfect. 10So I write these things while I am away from you, so that when I come, I may not have to be severe in using the authority that the Lord has given me for building up and not for tearing down. 11 Finally, brothers and sisters, farewell. Put

things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. 12Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you.

13 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.

HELP US APPOINT A NEW FULL-TIME CLERGY COLLEAGUE The Cathedral is hoping to appoint a third senior full-time cleric to coordinate

teaching programs and Christian education programs for members of our Cathedral community, as well as develop, train and encourage congregational lay leadership

to extend and grow our ministry at the heart of Melbourne. Chapter’s Finance Committee has identified that we would need to raise an additional $50,000 each year for the next five years to make this appointment. We would be delighted if

members were willing to pledge support for this important new role through increased giving. We will collect pledges until All Saints’ Sunday (4 Nov), and will keep a monthly tally on pledges received to keep you updated. Thank you for your

generous support. USING OUR TAP & GO TECHNOLOGY Our new collection plates are fitted with a ‘tap and go’ device, allowing you to make your offering via credit card if you wish – just hold your card (don’t swipe it) against the paywave symbol until you hear a beep, and the message ‘thank you for your donation’ flashes up on the screen. The devices are set at $20, which is the average weekly contribution made by regular worshippers. Tap and go facilities are also integrated into our Chapel of Unity, and at several other donation points around the Cathedral. Please note that none of these devices accept American Express Cards.

HYMN 1: ALL PEOPLE THAT ON EARTH DO DWELL

2

The Lord, ye know, is God in-deed, without our aid he did us make; we are his folk, he doth us feed, and for his sheep he doth us take.

3

O enter then his gates with praise, approach with joy his courts unto; praise, laud, and bless his name always, for it is seemly so to do.

4

To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, the God whom heaven and earth adore, from earth and from the angel host be praise and glory evermore. Amen.

Text: Psalm 100, versified by William Kethe (d.1594) Music: Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)

HYMN 2: FATHER HEAR THE PRAYER WE OFFER

2

Not for ever in green pastures do we ask our way to be; but the steep and rugged pathway may we tread rejoicingly.

3

Not for ever by still waters would we idly rest and stay; but would smite the living fountains from the rocks along our way.

4

Be our strength in hours of weakness, in our wanderings be our guide; through endeavour, failure, danger, Father, be thou at our side.

Maria Willis (1824-1908). New English Hymnal 357

HYMN 3: LORD OF ALL HOPEFULNESS

Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith, whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe, be there at our labours and give us, we pray, your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day. Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace, your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace, be there at our homing and give us, we pray, your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day. Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm, whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm, be there at our sleeping and give us, we pray, your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.

HYMN 4: ETERNAL FATHER, STRONG TO SAVE

2

O Christ, whose voice the waters heard and hushed their raging at thy word, who walkedst on the foaming deep, and calm amid the storm didst sleep: O hear us when we cry to thee for those in peril on the sea.

3

O Holy Spirit, who didst brood upon the waters dark and rude, and bid their angry tumult cease, and give, for wild confusion, peace: O hear us when we cry to thee for those in peril on the sea.

4

O Trinity of love and power, our brethren shield in danger’s hour; from rock and tempest, fire and foe, protect them wheresoe’er they go: thus evermore shall rise to thee glad hymns of praise from land and sea.
