LITURGY AND WORSHIP ~ LITURGIA Y CULTO Joyce Lubofsky

[email protected] 281.333.3891 Ext. 333

NEXT WEEKEND: Instructional Masses Have you wondered why the Mass is structured in the way we celebrate it today? Or why the celebrant wears those particular items of clothing? Or how the readings from the Bible are chosen? Or why some parts of the Mass are the same every week and others change? One Sunday each month we will highlight one piece of the Mass. The celebrant will take a few moments to explain the “who, what and why” of a particular action. This will take place at all the Masses. There will also be a handout inserted in the bulletin which will have material for children and adults. The first Instructional Mass will take place the next weekend. After the 9 AM Mass, there will be a “Welcome Back” brunch hosted by the Pastoral Staff as we give thanks for the blessing of our wonderful parishioners and kick off another school year!

Children’s Liturgy of the Word: At the 9 AM Mass on the first Sunday each month from October through May, we will offer a Children’s Liturgy of the Word. After the Opening Prayer, students in Kindergarten through 5th grade will be invited to follow their catechists to Founders’ Hall where the readings of the Mass will be proclaimed on a level appropriate to their understanding. There will be activities to correspond to the readings. The children will return to the Church before the Offertory.

Training of new Extra Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC): Extra Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC) are those who assist with the distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ at daily and weekend Masses. On Saturday, October 6th, there will be an all-day training program for those interested in serving. Please contact Joyce Lubofsky for further information about this ministry.

Ministry and Continuing Education for Adults Because Our Faith is too Rich to have ever Learned it All…

Contact Heidi Clark, Director of Adult Ministry, 281.333.3891, Ext. 328 or [email protected] for more information.

Adult faith formation at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church is centered around the understanding that living

“The Way” taught by Jesus Christ is a life-long, evolving journey, involving both effort and decision. To enable adults to explore the

faith and deepen their knowledge of God’s Word, we provide many opportunities to come together in a learning environment. As a

diverse community with a small parish feel, we know it is important to walk that journey with others and to share what we have

learned along the way.

Pornography Information The destructive impact of pornography on children and families is difficult to hear but cannot be ignored. The average age of first Internet exposure to pornography is 11 years old. Eighty percent of 15-17 year olds have had multiple hard-core exposures to these sights. Ninety percent of 8-16 year olds have viewed pornography online, usually while doing homework. The porn industry targets children by setting up websites that have names similar to cartoons. This is how children are directed to very graphic images.

Pornography is a chemical addiction. When our eyes see sexually graphic images our bodies produce dopamine, and when dopamine mixes with testosterone it results in an adrenaline rush, similar to a drug addict’s high. Norepinephrine sends a message to the nervous system, the spinal cord and reproductive organs. All of this leads to anxiety and excitement that can only be released in a way that is harmful to the person and contrary to our Faith. When this happens, oxytocin is released connecting the person to the object giving pleasure. Properly used, this reaction is a gift for a man and woman to connect in the marital act as they renew the Sacrament of marriage, but pornography trades this beauty for a lie.

Through programs that integrate the scientific, psychological and spiritual aspects of recovery, there is hope and help for entire families. Following are some helpful websites. You’ll also find useful resources from the U.S. Catholic Bishops at the Welcome Center and in our bathrooms. We have inserted a list of helpful, local resources for those who need more info. Please use these resources for help and also don’t remember the power and grace of the Sacrament of Confession. • http://reclaimsexualhealth.com • http://www.integrityrestored.com • http://www.thekingsmen.us

Wanna be Catholic? Inquiry sessions for people wanting to learn more about becoming Catholic are happening weekly. Whether you intend to convert or not, you are welcome to participate. Legion of Mary Seeks New Members Legion of Mary is a lay apostolic association of Catholics who, with the sanction of the Church and under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, serve the Church and neighbors on a voluntary basis. The object of the Legion of Mary is the glory of God developed by prayer and active cooperation in Mary’s and the Church’s work. The group meets weekly for prayer and discussion on Monday evenings from 7-8:30 PM in room 1. Members participate in the life of the parish through visitation of families, the sick, both in their homes and in hospital, and through collaboration in every apostolic and missionary undertaking sponsored by the parish. Every legionary is required to carry out a weekly apostolic work in the spirit of faith and in union with Mary. For more information, contact Maria Lorenzo at 832.814.8248.
