OUR PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

We, the people of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Faith Community, Baptized into Jesus Christ, formed by Word and Sacrament, and Empowered by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Seek to be a visible sign of God’s love. We seek to build the Kingdom of God by: Using our unique gifts to minister to one another, Welcoming all and caring for those in need, Teaching our faith to others and Uniting in worship as a family with the Body of Christ.

Dear HOLY PEOPLE of God:

Last weekend were days of joy and fun! The drizzle was a blessing! And the concluded 2019 Harvest Festival was a panorama of ONE community: leaders and staff moved as one; volunteers were amaz-ing; and visitors were wonderful. In one shot, it’s more fun at St. Paul the Apostle Parish! For all that has been, THANKS! For all that will be, YES! See you all at the 2020 Harvest Festival!

Back to the gospel: the Apostles said to Jesus, “Increase our FAITH!” Faith isn’t about quantity but it’s about trust. Jesus uses a very convincing comparison, he said:

“If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be up-rooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.”

Jesus’ words are factories of miracles! Reflect on this story:

Before Christmas, a mother came into a store and asked for food to make a Christmas dinner for her children. The owner asked her how much she had to spend. She said, “My husband was killed in Iraq. I don’t have any work, and nothing to offer but my faith and prayer.” The owner said, “Write it down.” To his surprise, the mother handed to him a piece of paper, saying: “I did that during the night while I was watching over my starving children.”

The owner took the paper, placed it on his old fashioned weighing scale, he said, “I will give you the weight of food equal to the weight of this piece of paper.” He put loaves of bread, cheese, and ham on the other side of the scale, and the scale did not move. Shocked, he loaded so much food on the scale until it cannot hold anymore. But the scale didn’t move. The owner handed the woman a bag and said, “Put the food in the bag yourself,” then he turned away shaking his head.

The mother was in tears of joy, thanked the owner, and went home. It was only after the mother left that the owner discovered that the scale was broken at the precise moment he placed the piece of paper with a prayer on it. Then he looked down to read what the mother had written. These were the words, “Lord, I have faith in you; please give us this day our daily bread.”

Today, like what happened in our story, let’s write our needs and place them in God’s hands – the weighing scales of love! With faith in our hearts, they might return to us as blessings; maybe not today, but tomorrow, or sooner, but soonest is the best. Just believe. FAITH makes miracles!

God bless you all!

A Note from the Director

Dear Parents, families and friends, Welcome to the 2019-2020 Catechetical Year! Our Catechists and staff are here in support of your child’s faith journey. It seems fitting to say a few words about how faith is formed, whether your child is a 1st grader or a high school student. It behooves all of us to share our faith with them and pass on just how much God loves us.

Our youth cannot understand the personal relationship that they are invited to have with Christ in faith unless they are led to it through the human values they acquire from personal relation-ships in the home. Children are always learning by what they see and hear and experience in their immediate surroundings. Unconsciously their responses reflect the attitudes of those with whom they live. When parents consciously direct this learning process toward a positive awareness of reli-gious experiences, when they make the effort to build a family life centered in God, they are cultivat-ing the dispositions for a kind of faith-response that is needed when children first meet Christ in the Eucharist.

A relationship with Christ is not a crash program done in a few weeks before receiving First Com-munion or being confirmed. It cannot be developed in a vacuum, it must grow and be nurtured through experiences of living and loving those with whom the children share their lives. In order for children to come to love Jesus, they also must come to know Jesus. Parents are encouraged to in-troduce their children to Christ by telling stories about the birth of Jesus and other stories that are interesting to young children. Showing children picture books of the events in the life of Christ or watching movies or videos of bible stories about Jesus with them is an excellent way to help children come to know more about Jesus.

Families should pray to Jesus together. Each day some time should be set aside for family prayer. The length of time and the form of prayer the family chooses should depend upon the ages of the children in the family and the attention span of the youngest child to be included in this time of shared prayer. Family prayer time should be a relaxed time, perhaps before or after meals or before bedtime. While our schedules may be hectic this can be a time of peace and calm. Start today!

May God continue to bless us, our children and all our journeys. In Christ, Jeanie Kiefer, Director

Evangelization & Faith Page 13

U nderlying all three readings this week is the idea of faith. It be-

gins with the first reading: the prophet Habakkuk cries out to God with a question common to every human heart: Why does God allow evil to persist in the world? God doesn’t answer with the kind of ex-planation we would normally want. Instead, God’s answer to Habakkuk is a call to trust in his plan, a call to have faith. After all, we see only the tiniest part of God’s plan. We are called to wait in faith, believing that in the end everything will be made right.

The second reading reaffirms our need to have faith and trust, adding that we do not have to do this on our own, but the Holy Spirit will give us the aid we need.

Finally, in the Gospel reading, the apostles recognize that they don’t have enough faith, and they ask Jesus to increase their faith. Christ tells them that if they had faith as tiny as a mustard seed they could do great things. But he also warns us that we can’t wait until we have a strong feeling of faith; we must act on the faith we have now.

Taken together, these three read-ings provide a powerful three-pronged lesson: First, God calls us to exercise trust in his plan for our lives, a call that is based on our

faith in him and his goodness. Sec-ond, even though faith can be diffi-cult, the Holy Spirit will be with us helping us to both exercise and in-crease our faith. Third, we are not to wait until we have a plentitude of faith, but we are to begin with the faith we have, since it is in the exer-cising of faith that faith itself will in-crease.

D IGGING DEEPPER FOR ISCUSION

FORMED members can watch the short “Opening the Word “ VIDEO free at sptacc.formed.org Reflect on these following questions with a friend or family: • In today’s Gospel reading, the apos-

tles ask Jesus to increase their faith. What should we do when we feel we don’t have enough faith?

• Let’s consider the questions which the presenter asked at the end of the video. Do you really believe that there is nothing you could do to earn or deserve God’s love, but that he loves you just because of who he is? Why or why not? And are you really ready to be a generous receiver? Why or why not?

P RAYER: Habakkuk asks God, “How long, O LORD? I cry for

help but you do not listen! I cry out to you, ‘Violence!’ but you do not intervene. Why do you let me see ruin; why must I look at misery? De-

struction and violence are before me; there is strife, and clamorous discord.” Think about a time in your life when you felt you were crying out to God without receiving any answer or help. How did you feel? How did you react? Did you ever receive an answer, or are you still waiting? How did you feel when you finally did receive an answer?

R ESOLUTION: The Lord tells Habakkuk that the vision will

not disappoint and will surely come in the right time. In what situation or area of your life is God calling you to radical faith this week?

Increase Our FAITH
