W hen the days for Jesus to be taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusa-lem, and he sent messengers ahead of him. On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there, but they would not welcome him because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?" Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they journeyed to another village. As they were proceeding on their journey someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." Jesus answered him, "Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head." And to another he said, "Follow me." But he replied, "Lord, let me go first and bury my father." But he answered him, "Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God." And another said, "I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home." Jesus answered him, "No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God."

C uando estaba por cumplirse el tiempo de su elevación al cielo, Jesús se encaminó decidid-

amente hacia Jerusalén

y envió mensajeros delante de él. Ellos partieron y entraron en un pueblo de Samaría para

prepararle alojamiento.

Pero no lo recibieron porque se dirigía a Jerusalén.

Cuando sus discípulos Santiago y Juan vieron esto, le dijeron: "Señor, ¿quieres que mandemos

caer fuego del cielo para consumirlos?".

Pero él se dio vuelta y los reprendió.

Y se fueron a otro pueblo.

Mientras iban caminando, alguien le dijo a Jesús: "¡Te seguiré adonde vayas!".

Jesús le respondió: "Los zorros tienen sus cuevas y las aves del cielo sus nidos, pero el Hijo del

hombre no tiene dónde reclinar la cabeza".

Y dijo a otro: "Sígueme". El respondió: "Permíteme que vaya primero a enterrar a mi padre".

Pero Jesús le respondió: "Deja que los muertos entierren a sus muertos; tú ve a anunciar el

Reino de Dios".

Otro le dijo: "Te seguiré, Señor, pero permíteme antes despedirme de los míos".

Jesús le respondió: "El que ha puesto la mano en el arado y mira hacia atrás, no sirve para el

Reino de Dios".

“When I read the works of Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI, it becomes ever clearer to me that he has done and does ‘theology on his knees’: on his knees because, before even being a very great theologian and teacher of the faith, one sees that he is a man who really believes, who truly prays; one sees that he is a man who person-ifies sanctity, a man of peace, a man of God.” Thus begins the Preface that Pope Francis wrote for the book “Teach and Learn the Love of God,” the first vol-ume of the series: Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI, Selected Texts, which is to include seven volumes that will be published annually in Spain by BAC Publishers from 2016 to 2022. In the Preface, the Pontiff says that Benedict XVI “embodies exemplarily the heart of all priestly action”: a pro-found rooting in God without which all possible organizational capacity and all alleged intellectual superiority, all mon-ey and power are useless. He embod-ies that constant relationship with the Lord Jesus without whom nothing is

true, everything becomes routine, priests become wage earners, bishops bureaucrats and the Church ceases to be the Church of Christ and becomes a product of ours, an NGO, superfluous when all is said and done, says Pope Francis. I allow myself to say, says the Pope, that if someone at some moment had doubts about the core of his ministry, about its meaning, about its useful-ness; if at some moment he had doubts about what men truly expect from us, he should meditate profoundly on the pages that are offered to us in this book, because men expect from us above all what is written and witnessed in this book. Moreover, reading this volume one sees clearly how the Pope Emeritus, in his 65 years of priesthood, which will be celebrated this June 29, “has lived and lives, has witnessed and witness-es exemplarily the essence of priestly action,” adds the Holy Father. As Pope Francis explains, Cardinal Ludwig Gerhard Muller has stated with authority that the theological work of

Joseph Ratzinger-Benedict XVI “places him in that series of very great theolo-gians that have occupied the Chair of Peter, such as, for instance, Pope Leo the Great, saint and doctor of the Church.” Likewise, the Pontiff says that Benedict XVI continues to witness, perhaps now in an even more luminous way from the Mater Ecclesia convent, “that inti-mate nucleus of the priestly ministry that deacons, priests and bishops must never forget,” that is, that the first and most important service is not the man-agement of “current affairs,” but to pray for others, uninterruptedly, with soul and body, precisely as the Pope Emer-itus does today. In addition, Pope Francis stresses that prayer, Benedict XVI tells us and wit-nesses in this book, is the decisive fac-tor: it’s an intercession of which the Church and the world are in greater need than ever. This volume, explains the Holy Father in the Prologue, is ad-dressed in the same measure to priests and to the lay faithful.

“Menores migrantes, vulnerables y sin voz” es el tema elegido por el Santo Padre para la Jornada Mun-dial del Migrante y el Refugiado que se celebra el 15 de enero de 2017. Así lo indica un comunicado publi-cado hoy por el Pontificio Consejo para la Pastoral de los Migrantes e Itinerantes, subrayando que “la mi-gración es un fenómeno mundial, no solamente europeo o mediterrá-neo”, ya que “afecta a todos los continentes” y “no atañe exclusiva-mente a las personas en busca de trabajo o de mejores condiciones de vida, sino también a los adultos y menores que huyen de auténticas tragedias”. Además, recuerdan que “a menudo los niños llegan solos al país de destino, no consiguen ha-cerse oír y se convierten con facili-dad en víctimas de graves violacio-nes de los derechos humanos”. Con este mensaje, el dicasterio

asegura que es necesario garanti-zar que en cada país los migrantes que llegan y sus familias, gocen del respeto pleno de sus derechos. Y precisan que “la preocupación más grande es la suscitada por la condi-ción de los menores en el contexto de la migración internacional”. Efec-tivamente, “los niños y las mujeres representan las categorías más vul-nerables dentro de este gran fenó-meno y los menores son los más frágiles, a menudo hasta invisibles, porque carecen de documentos o no tienen quien les acompañe”. Por todo ello, con el tema “Menores migrantes, vulnerables y sin voz” el Santo Padre quiere poner en el cen-tro de la atención “a los más peque-ños entre los pequeños”. También se recuerda que en oca-sión de la Jornada Mundial del Mi-grante y el Refugiado se publicará, como es habitual, un mensaje del

Santo Padre. Esta Jornada tiene su origen en la circular “El dolor y la preocupación” que la Sagrada Congregación Con-sistorial mandó el 6 de diciembre de 1914 a los Ordinarios diocesanos italianos en la que se solicitaba, por primera vez, la institución de una “Jornada anual de sensibilización sobre el fenómeno de la migración” y también para “organizar una co-lecta en favor de las obras pastora-les para los emigrantes italianos y la formación de los misioneros para emigración”. La consecuencia de aquella misiva fue la celebración, el 21 de febrero de 1915, de la primera Jornada Mundial del Migrante y el Refugia-do.

Next week, our parish will take up a collection for the Solidarity Fund for

the Church in Africa. While the Church in Africa is growing, many still lack

access to basic resources and pastoral care. Many suffer due to high rates

of poverty and unemployment, illiteracy, and poor education. The Solidari-

ty Fund for the Church in Africa supports pastoral projects that foster last-

ing peace and reconciliation in a continent often marked by division and

tension.

La próxima semana, nuestra parroquia realizará una colecta para el Fondo

de Solidaridad para la Iglesia en África. Aunque la Iglesia en África está

creciendo, muchos aun no tienen acceso a recursos básicos ni a un cuidado

pastoral. Muchos sufren debido a la alta tasa de pobreza y desempleo, al

analfabetismo y a una educación deficiente. El Fondo de Solidaridad para la

Iglesia en África apoya proyectos pastorales que promueven la paz du-

radera y la reconciliación en un continente que, a menudo, está marcado

por divisiones y tensiones.
