GOSPEL REFLECTION

Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the

was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would baptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

LIFE’S LITTLE INSTRUCTION BOOK

In the first reading today Elijah, a great prophet of ancient Israel, restores life to the son of a widow from Zarephath. Understandably the bishops paired this reading with the reading of the Widow of Nain, which is today’s gospel text. The widow shows kindness to the prophet during a drought and receives flour and oil that will last her for its duration. When her son dies,

duration. When her son dies, she mistakenly blames the prophet for his death, but Elijah prays to God and the boy’s life is restored. The miracle story serves to legitimize the prophet as a “man of God.” (I Kg 17:18)

Writing to the Galatians Paul reminds them, and us, that the call to serve the Gospel is of divine origin. His radical change from one who “persecuted the church” and “tried to destroy it” (1:13) to one who “proclaim(s) him to the Gentiles”(v.16) is rooted in God’s call. Paul reminds them of this to exhort them to hold to the faith he preached to them. His concern is that they may stray to following another version of the gospel, negating the good work begun in them.

The story of the raising of the widow’s son in today’s gospel is unique to Luke. He pairs it with the healing of the centurion’s slave to provide what is called a “gender pair”; Jesus’ outreach is to both males and females, just as he preaches about men and women (cf. the shepherd with the lost sheep and the woman with the lost coin in Luke 15). Today’s widow is burying her “only son,” (7:12) her sole means of support as a widow. Jesus approaches her “with pity” and brings her son back from the dead, giving “him to his mother.” (v.15) i.e. restoring their relationship.

For Reflection: Like the widow of Zarephath am I quick to blame God for the bad things in my life? Are there people in my life whom I consider beyond the reach of God’s grace? If so, why?

1. Practice empathy. Try to see things from other people’s point of view

2. Discipline yourself to save money. It’s essential to success.

3. Don’t burn bridges. You’ll be surprised how many times you have to cross the same river.

4. See problems as opportunities for growth and self-mastery.

5. Get and stay in shape.
