TODAY’S GOSPEL When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, "Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage." When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, He inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel."

FEAST OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD MONDAY, JANUARY 9th, 2017

MASS AT 8:00am IN THE CHAPEL

Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. John tried to prevent him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?" Jesus said to him in reply, "Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed him. After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."

GOSPEL REFLECTION

Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the

was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would aptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although

Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of the Christ child to the world, represented by the magi. In Jesus, God is in our midst. Their journey leads them to behold the savior of the world. In what is traditionally called Third Isaiah, the prophet, writing to the returned exiles, calls them to rejoice in the fact that God has rescued them, “the glory of the LORD has dawned upon you.” (60:1) Brought back from exile they are to rebuild the Temple and restore Jerusalem to its former glory. Israel, and the renewed Jerusalem, will be a light for the nations and a destination for people from all over the earth, “heralding the praises of the LORD.” (v.6)

will be a light for the nations and a destination for people from all over the earth, “heralding the praises of the LORD.” (v.6) For Third Isaiah God is lord of all the earth and to be praised by all nations.

In Ephesians we hear that in Christ the “Gentiles are coheirs…and copartners in the promise of Christ Jesus.” (3:6) Jesus came to redeem the whole world, fulfilling God’s promises spoken through the prophets. He came to give all people a share in the divine life, breaking the barriers between Jew and Gentile, and God and humanity.

The story of the visit of the magi presents us with a contrast of characters: Herod, king of the Jews, whose own chief priests and scribes point him to the birth of the messiah in Bethlehem, and the magi, who were guided to the messiah by following a star. God led them to Jesus by means of their own custom of reading the heavens for divine guidance; they did not need to read the scripture, they could read the stars. Their response is one of faith, humility and adoration. In contrast, Herod, informed by the scripture, responds with jealousy, anger and violence. From the beginning the gospels tell us that not everyone accepted Jesus. But in order to share in his life we must walk by his light. For Reflection: Do I try to walk by the light of God or do I seek to follow my own way? What does it mean to say that Christ came for everyone? Do I approach people of other faiths with an awareness of this?

ST. MOTHER TERESA HER ESSENTIAL WISDOM—A CALL TO SERVE

“I did my novitiate in Darjeeling and took the vows with the Loreto Sisters. For twenty years, I was at work in education in the St. Mary’s High School, which was mostly for middle class children. I loved teaching, and in Loreto I was the happiest nun in the world. In 1948,

20 years after I came to India .”—Mother Teresa’s words.

twenty years after I came to India, I actually decided upon this close contactwith the poorest of the poor. It was for me a special vocation to give all to belong to Jesus. I felt the God wanted from me something more. He wanted me to be poor with the poor and to love him in the distressing disguise of the poorest of the poor. I had the obedience.”—Mother Teresa’s words.
