About Worship

We follow an ancient pattern through the liturgy (which literally means “the work of the people”).

Some parts of the service may change each week, but there is a consistent flow: praising God, hear-

ing God’s word, offering our prayers and gifts, celebrating communion, and being sent into the world

for service. The format remains fairly constant, but the style will vary widely. Sometimes we sing with

the pipe organ, and the ministers chant. Sometimes we worship accompanied by piano, guitars,

drums, violins, flutes—or whatever our folk play. We range from Bach to blues, because we know that

different styles connect to different people. So we all worship together, and change the style every

few weeks. It’s one of the ways we minister to and with each other and build community. Thank you

for being part of our worship and community today!

Gathering Together in Worship

*Confession and Forgiveness P: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen. P: Most merciful God, C: we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us; and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father; and of the Son; and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

*Hymn of Praise “Now the Feast and Celebration” ELW, #167

*Prayer of the Day P: God of promise, you have picked up your prophets and restored them to strength when they were ready to quit. Take us also and gently awaken us to the commitment we have made to serve you, knowing that you will never leave us on our own. In Jesus’ name. C: Amen.

Responding to the Word of God

Lesson 1 Kings 19:1-18

The Word of God as written in 1 Kings: 19Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.

2Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So may the gods

do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life like the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.”

3Then he was afraid; he got up and fled for his life, and came to

Beer-sheba, which belongs to Judah; he left his servant there. 4But he himself went

a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: “It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.”

5Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell

asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, “Get up and eat.” 6He

looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again.

7The angel of the LORD came a second time,

touched him, and said, “Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you.”

8He got up, and ate and drank; then he went in the strength of that food forty

days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God. 9At that place he came to a cave,

and spent the night there. Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

10He answered, “I have been very zealous for the LORD,

the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.”

11He said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the

LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.” Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake;

12and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire;

and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. 13

When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him that said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

14He answered, “I

have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have for-saken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.”

15Then the

LORD said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael as king over Aram.

16Also you shall anoint Jehu son

of Nimshi as king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place.

17Whoever escapes from the sword of Hazael,

Jehu shall kill; and whoever escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall kill. 18

Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

L: Word of God, Word of life. C: Thanks be to God.

*Gospel Acclamation

*The Gospel John 12:27-30 P: The Holy Gospel according to John.

C: Glory to you, O Lord.

27“Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say — ‘Father, save me from this

hour’? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. 28

Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”

P: The Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon Pastor Jared

*Rite of Remembrance P: Eternal God, maker of heaven and earth, who formed us from the dust of the earth, who by your breath gave us life, we glorify you. C: We glorify you. P: Jesus Christ, the resurrection and the life, who suffered death for all humanity, who rose from the grave to open the way to eternal life, we praise you. C: We praise you. P: Holy Spirit, author and giver of life, the comfort of all who sorrow, our sure confidence and everlasting hope, we worship you. C: We worship you. P: To you, O blessed Trinity, be glory and honor, forever and ever. C: Amen. P: Let us pray. O God of grace and glory, we remember before you today our sisters and brothers who have entered your promise this year, especially Walter Melgren, Guadalupe Lugo, Cathy Price, Connie O’Mara, Marleah Schweppe, Lauren Lucero, Ginny Olsen, Paricia Doerfler, Jim White, Ken Arnesen, Gene Siegel, Tom Stewart, Anna Berland, Rev. Kenneth R. Olsen, Marilyn Fallbacher, John Cieslak, Robert Hendricks, Gary Vicha, Bonnie Rafferty, Sophya Barry, Cheri Myers, Paul Barmantje and Robert Glaybo. We thank you for giving them to us to know and to love as companions in our pilgrimage on earth. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn, and encourage us by their witness to be bold in our proclamation of your goodness. Give us faith to see that death has been swallowed up in the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ, so that we may live in confidence and hope until, by your call, we are gathered to our heavenly home in the company of all your saints; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

C: Amen. During the singing you are invited to come down the side aisles for the candle light-ing. Light a candle from the tapers held by the acolytes and place your candle in the rack in memory of a loved one. The flame represents resurrection and the undimmed witness of all those who have died in Christ. Please begin by placing candles in the top tier of the rack and work downward, so those behind you will not need to reach over a flame to place their candles.

*Rite of Remembrance “Behold the Host, Arrayed in White” ELW, # 425

*Nicene Creed A: Let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed. We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,*

who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen. *Prayers of the People After each petition of the prayers:

A: Empowering God.

C: Hear our prayer. *Passing the Peace P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: And also with you.

C: Amen.

P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. P: It is indeed right . . . join their unending hymn.
