Time to Shift Gears

I recently had the opportunity to attend the LCMC Leadership Conference in Altoona, Iowa. And the theme for this year's conference was "Shift: Retooling the Church". One of the speakers introduced some startling new research: that only 40% of Americans today are within the cultural reach of 95% of Christian churches. Only 40% of Americans would ever even consider stepping foot inside a typical church today. This also means that only 5% of Christian churches are actually oriented towards the overwhelming majority of the unchurched in America today. This should be a wake-up call to the Church in America as we need to shift gears in our ministry to effectively evangelize and disciple the nation in which God has planted us. So what are the shifts that need to take place for our congregations to be faithful in our calling to make disciples?

The first shift is from congregational-focused to kingdom-focused ministry. In previous generations of the American church, simply being an active congregation that had well-executed programs and activities ensured its place as a cultural center of its community. Pastoral care of members was central to the work of every pastor and laity involved in activities and programs represented a living out of one's faith. But the focus tended to be within as churches focused on being better churches which meant doing things better than before...and better than the other churches in town! The challenge in this shift is to acknowledge God's desire for his people not to simply build bigger and better congregations, but to seek first building God's kingdom. Churches stop competing and start cooperating with the objective to bless and love people in Jesus' name beyond the walls of our churches. And we also need to overcome animosity towards the unchurched-you know that feeling you get when you see a Darwin fish with feet on a car! Instead we need to look with love upon those who don't share our Christian worldview.

The second shift is from pastor-dependent to pastor-equipped ministry. In Ephesians 4, we learn that the role of Christian leaders is to equip the saints for ministry. In days of old, many congregations expected the role of the pastor to be the employee of the church who took care of the church and carried-out the ministries and programs that they expressed an interest in. In other words, congregations became dependent on their pastors to serve the needs of the church. This shift involves a return to the Ephesians 4 understanding that the primary role of a pastor is to train up and send out disciples as missionaries.

The third shift presented drives this point home: from consumer-making to disciple-making. Pastor-dependent congregations breed a culture of consumerism which is simply not compatible with a culture of discipleship. We need to ask the hard question: what are our ministries producing? We can have hundreds of visitors attend our annual dinner and have dozens of teens attend a bowling outing, but if we are not producing disciples-lives shaped by following Jesus-we are neglecting our primary purpose as a congregation. It's time for God's people to reevaluate what we are doing and how we are doing it. What do we need to stop doing that is distracting us from our primary purpose? And what do we need to start doing that will help us to make disciples?

The Adult Christian Education (ACE) Schedule for May 2016

Sunday ACE classes meet at 9:40 AM. Pastor Lee’s Bible Study has completed the study of the Book of Acts. A new study and beginning date will be announced. It meets Thursdays at 8:00AM, 10:00AM and 6:30PM Our leaders are dedicated and well qualified disciples that spend much time preparing for the classes Please plan to attend at least one class of your choice. Class led by Jeff Smith meets in the ACE (Portable) building : We are continuing with the study on the Holy Spirit. We are looking at the power and attributes of the Holy Spirit. We are using numerous Old and New Testament scriptures as we work through this study. Our goal is to understand what a Christian receives through the indwelling of the Spirit. Class led by Dean & Kathy Krueger meets in the Luther Room: Starting May 15 Dean and Kathy's A.C.E. class will present a new topic, "Mormons, Christian Scientists and Jehovah's Witnesses." An overview of each of these denominations will be offered, and a key component of the lessons will be input from class members who have knowledge of these faiths. We especially invite anyone with experiences in these denominations to join our class for these presentations Never attended an Adult Sunday School class? Please consider "visiting" and joining your fellow disciples as we search the Scriptures for answers and insights. Bibles (NIV translation) are provided and some are new and in larger print. Materials are provided weekly. Each lesson stands on its own so COME and participate in the readings and discussions. A chair and Bible are waiting for YOU in the Luther Room. Class begins at 9:40AM. Coffee and donuts are allowed, so please join us! . Class led by Mike Scott meets in the choir room: A new study begins in May. This six-session small group Bible study, With All Your Heart, by noted teacher and historian, Ray Vander Laan, is volume ten of the 12-part Faith Lessons series. Do you remember where your blessing comes from? In Exodus, God warned Israel to remember him when they left the dry desert and reached the fertile fields of the Promised Land. But in this tenth volume of Faith Lessons, you’ll discover how quickly they forgot God and began to rely on themselves. Find out what it means to remember the Lord in your own life on this one-of-a-kind spiritual pilgrimage. Filmed on location in Israel, Faith Lessons is a unique video series that brings God's Word to life with astounding relevance. By weaving together the Bible's fascinating historical, cultural, religious, and geographical contexts, teacher and historian Ray Vander Laan reveals unique insights into the Scriptures' significance for modern believers. Class led by Ingrid Lingle meets in the office area workroom: Ingrid's class will continue the study of "The Twelve Apostles". They will be exploring the lives of the twelve, where they came from, where they went and how their lives ended. Tuesday Women’s class which meets Tuesday's in the choir room at 9;00 AM is led by Connie Osborn: Connie's class will be completing their study of "Death and the Resurrection of the Messiah" volume 4 by Ray Vander Laan on May 24th. Contact Connie Osborn at 830-885-7592 or by email at [email protected]. .

On Mother’s Day, Sunday May 8, we will be collecting non-perishable food items

and monetary donations for our local food bank, Provisions. Please remember to

use the orange bordered envelopes and write “Provisions” in the memo section of

your check. Thank you!

SILENT AUCTION – SUPPORT GUATEMALA

Coming up in June is a Silent Auction fundraiser for the Guatemala Mission trip. The dates are June 5th-19th and the team is asking for donations to put in our

auction. We have had some amazing items in the past so we are again asking for your support. If you have a hidden talent or would like to create a basket

to donate we would welcome all!

We would need your items turned into the church office by Sunday, May 29th so we have them to set up by the next Sunday. Please attach to your item your name and approximate value of your item. This helps us be able to display the item correctly.

Your continued support for our journey to Jalapa is always a blessing and we thank you ahead of time for your partnership!

Save the date...Sunday, May 22, we will continue to collect money for the Suburban for the Sutton Family. Help us fill the tank and use the orange bordered envelopes. Please make checks payable to “Hands of Mercy” and write Suburban in the memo section on your check. Our goal is to raise $14,000...we’re over 1/2 of the tank there!

***BULVERDE/SPRING BRANCH PREGNANCY CARE CENTER (BSBPCC)***

St. Paul has the awesome privilege to come alongside other churches in our area to support the BSBPCC. This is a satellite of the Boerne Pregnancy Care Center. For several years we have supported the wonderful ministry of Options for Life in New Braunfels. Now that we

have a center in our "own backyard" we have the opportunity to help them get established. The satellite doesn't have a building, but the EMS Center on Rodeo has welcomed BSBPCC to use the facility every Friday from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM, and every other Thursday there is space provided at St. Joseph Catholic Church by the pro-life Gabriel Project. All services are free and confidential. Services include: pregnancy testing, STD testing and treatment, 1st trimester non-diagnostic sonograms, pre-natal, childbirth, and parenting

classes, post abortion Bible studies, and male mentorship. Material assistance such as cribs, maternity and infant clothing, and supplies and equipment are also available. Please watch the bulletins and the Epistle for more news and updates on the center.

Baby Bottles will be back this year to take home between Mother's Day and Father's Day to fill to help support BSBPCC! Feel free to drop by the EMS station on Fridays between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM to learn more about this Christ centered ministry. Your prayers for the ministry are most welcomed!

A Successful Recipe

Combining Faith, Prayer and Action

Have you heard the one about the man who was trapped on a rooftop during a flood? He prayed for God to save

him. A boat, a helicopter and an airplane each arrived to rescue him. Each time, the man refused the help,

stating confidently that God would save him. Should we live our lives in full-hearted faith and lay aside

thoughtful human planning and action as if the two are mutually exclusive?

To walk by faith does not mean we stop thinking. To trust God does not imply that we become careless, irre-

sponsible or apathetic. We entrust many areas of our lives to God.

Our finances, but that is not an open door to spend foolishly.

Our physical safety, but it doesn’t mean we drive recklessly.

Our health, yet regular check-ups, exercise and proper diet are so important.

If we act foolishly or without thought it is not faith at all, it is presumption. Faith, prayer and human action go

hand in hand. Wisdom says do all we can within our strength and trust God to do what we cannot do, to

accomplish what we cannot accomplish.

Mark 10:27 “…With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”

Ephesians 6:13 “…Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able

to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”

Phil 4:6 “...by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

Lord,

Thank you for knowing the decisions and circumstances we confront in our lives.

Guide us to respond in ways that please you.

We trust your power and sovereignty to accomplish what seems impossible for us.

We know that you are working to bring about your perfect will for us.

Amen

This school year has gone by so fast! I can’t believe that we are already looking at graduation at the end of this month. We have

such fond memories as we look back over this past year. A few of our highlights were Grandparents Day, Trick or Trunking,

Thanksgiving Feast, Magik Theater, the Christmas program, pajama day, Zoo Man, Valentine’s Day, the Easter celebration, Fiesta,

and upcoming splash days and graduation. There were birthday celebrations, chapel with Pastor, music with Andy, and puppets

with Bonnie as well. We focused on letter, number, color, and shape recognition. We worked on our gross motor and fine motor

skills, our social skills, had science class twice a week, and tons of sensory exposure throughout. Learning is so much fun!

Friday May 6th is CDS Family Fun Night with an emphasis on FUN! It is from 5:00-8:00 p.m. We will have baskets that will be raffled

off that evening; you do not need to be present to win. Class baskets will be able to be previewed prior to that evening and raffle

tickets will be available for purchase at the worship service prior. Raffle tickets can be purchased for $1 each or 6 tickets for $5.

We will also have carnival games for the kids to play, the Blue Lion Train will be here, a fire truck is scheduled to visit that evening,

the Bulverde-Spring Branch library will be on-site with crafts and books, and an Usborne representative will be on-site selling books

that kids LOVE!! We will also be serving a delicious spaghetti dinner with a side salad and dessert to top it all off. Dinner tickets will

be $7 for ages 12 and up, $5 for kids age 3-11, and free for kids under the age of 3. Wristbands are $5 each and allow the kids to

play as many games and participate in as many activities as they like. Our school is not able to accept credit cards; cash or check

only please, thank you. It will be fun for the whole family!

Graduation is Thursday May 26th at 9:30 a.m., our grand finale of the year. The Pre-K students will be crossing the stage to receive

their diplomas as they will be moving on to Kindergarten in the fall. All of the other classes will take this opportunity to close out

their year in song. They will be entertaining their parents, family, and friends with various songs they have been working hard to

learn. School will end at 12:00 p.m. that day and their summer begins!!

Thank you all so much for your support and love for our school. We are able to provide the kids a Christian based learning environ-

ment where they feel safe and loved. You are offering them a wonderful beginning and we thank you for that. We will see you

again in September to kick off another fantastic school year!

Blessings,

Ms. Sandy

Threads of Love – St. Paul Lutheran Church

April has been a very exciting month for us. On April 23rd, we toured Threads of Love headquarters for the Sarah Chapter and brought our first completed projects. Our satellite began the end of February with introductory meetings and many of our members are first time crocheters. Items we were able to turn in were kangaroo squares, caps, laundry bags, and a pair of booties. In next month's Epistle we will have pictures from our tour. We also brought with us donated wedding dresses. These gowns are treated with the utmost respect and every bit is used in lining the inside of the tiny caskets, including the inside cover. Beading and other embellishments are sewn in as well. A volunteer for Threads of Love uses monies donated to purchase wood and then these caskets are handmade with a large cross on the top cover. Also, burial clothing is made from these wedding dresses. If you have an opportunity to donate a wedding dress, we will happily accept it at any time. Just notify one of our TOL members! Our meetings for the month of May are as follows: Evening Meetings: May 3rd and May 17th In the Choir Room Beginning at 6:30 p.m. Daytime Meetings: May 4th and May 18th Janice Walker Home 450 Hanging Oak Spring Branch 210-508-8847
