If you wander through the cemetery, you see grave stones whose inscriptions are barely legi- ble. The stone has weathered and names and dates are difficult to read. I think something similar has happened to the Ten Commandments. In our hurried and complex lives, we're not making out the profound insights those simple words have for our daily living. Take the Second Commandment, for example.. "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God on vain… (or as we learn it today: you shall not misuse the Name of the Lord your God. " Some have called the 2 nd the "Ivory Soap Commandment." In the olden days, when I child said a bad word there the threat: I’m going to wash your mouth out with soap. Well, that's part of the commandment but there's so much more. "The name of the Lord" is not simply about God's personal name, Jesus, or titles, like Father" or "Lord." "The name of the Lord" refers to all God reveals to us about His being, His redeem- ing care, and how He wants us to live as His children. Micah 6:8 - "He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" To take the Lord's name in vain is to have begun learn- ing and living by His truths and then stopped, like the seed in Jesus parable that sprouted but never came to full growth. This commandment is about the whole orientation of our life, on God's revelation, of which one expressed part is our language. "How precious also are Thy thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them!" (Psalm 139:17) We squabble whether or not a monument with the Ten Commandments should be allowed in a town square. Those monuments are often of granite, their inscriptions won't deteriorate like old cemetery stones. But so what? If God's people have forgoen to lead our lives by these profound but simple guides, so what if they are or are not on a monument? Paul said, "You are our leer...known and read by all men." Annual Auction Update

Our 11th annual auction will take place at Beverly Gardens on Saturday, February 16, 2013. So, save the date! It will be the

same format as other years, with two exceptions. This year there will be a 50/50 raffle and a gun raffle.

A box has been placed in the narthex for submitting donation forms if you have an item you would like to donate. Thanks be to God that numerous items have already been donated! If you know of a business or individual that would be happy to donate to this year’s auction, please pick up a business solicitation letter from the binder in the narthex. It doesn’t hurt to ask, all they can say is no.

If you have any questions or comments, please speak with an auction committee member.

Stewardship News and Views

“Give thanks in all circumstances

for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. “

I Thessalonians 5:18

When asked “What are you thankful for?”, most people respond with family, food, good health, a

good job. All the “good” things in life. It’s easy to give thanks for things when everything is going

well, when all we have to do is count our blessings. Think about the following:

*Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire -

if you did, what would there be to look forward to?

*Be thankful when you don’t know some things -

for it gives you the opportunity to learn.

*Be thankful for the difficult times - during those times you grow.

*Be thankful for your limitations -

they give you opportunities for improvement.

*Be thankful for each challenge -

it will build your strength and character.

*Be thankful for your mistakes -

they will teach you valuable lessons.

*Be thankful when you’re tired and weary -

It means you’ve made a difference.

*A life of rich fulfillment comes to those

Who are also thankful for the setbacks.

*Gratitude can turn a negative to a positive.

*Find a way to be thankful for your troubles, they can become your blessings.

We invite you this holiday season to be thankful - not only for the good things but for everything!

When we turn in gratitude to God for everything, our lives become a living thanksgiving - lived

everyday.

God’s Blessings

Pastor Grams, Renette Brand, Bonnie Lannbrecht, and Lon Fager.
