An Explanation of the Service of Holy Week & Easter The life of our congregation finds its center and high point in the commemoration of Holy Week and Easter, when we celebrate the suffering, death, and resurrection of our Lord. No other week of the church year is celebrated with such solemnity, devotion, and reverence. During these days, the church accompanies her Lord on His way to the cross and to the grave and rejoices in His victory over death. We follow our Lord believing that to die with Christ, we shall also rise with Him! Holy Week begins with the Divine Service on Palm Sunday – April 1, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. The service begins with the reading of Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem and the Procession with Palms by the children of the congregation. The Passion According to St. Mark will be read as the Holy Gospel and the Choir will provide special music for the day. On Palm Sunday we receive Jesus as our King who will be glorified and exalted by His death and resurrection! As we did last year, we will gather in the church for Evening Prayer at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, Tues- day, and Wednesday of Holy Week. These brief contemplative services of prayer, song, and meditation, per- mit us to hear the accounts of our Lord’s Passion from St. Matthew and St. Luke. Holy Week continues with the Sacred Tridium or “Holy Three Days” of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Vigil of Easter. The first of them, Maundy Thursday, is a solemn, yet joy-filled service commemorating Our Lord’s institution of the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. The title ‘Maundy’ comes from the Latin word which means ‘mandate,’ and recalls the New Commandment Jesus gave His disciples as He washed their feet, “Love one another as I have loved you.” The Divine Service on Maundy Thursday will be held April 5, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. The traditional commun- ion liturgy will be employed and the choir will highlight the festive nature of the ser- vice. Following the Holy Communion, the church is darkened and Psalm 22 will be prayed during the Solemn Stripping of the Altar, recognizing our Lord’s anguished prayer and betrayal in the Garden of Gethsemane. Good Friday, the second of the Holy Three Days, is called ‘good’ because on this day our Lord Jesus Christ paid for the sins of the world once and for all on the cross. Once again we will gather Friday April 6 at 1:00 p.m. for a service of medi- tatioin and prayer based the Passion according to St. John. The key feature of the mid-day service will be the solemn procession of the holy cross, when a large wood- en cross will be carried into the church and placed at the altar steps. The faithful will gather for Tenebrae - The Service of Darkness at 7:30 p.m. The meditative service of readings from Isaiah 53 and the Passion According to St. John, hymns, psalms, and prayers culminates with the sounding of the strepitus, a loud noise sym- bolizing the sealing of the tomb. The third of the Holy Three Days is the Vigil of Easter, which will be Saturday April 7, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. The early church conducted all of her baptisms at the Easter Vigil, symbolizing the baptismal reality that the believer has died to sin and been raised with Christ to New Life! It is a service that begins in darkness pierced by the Light of Christ, symbolized by the lighting of the Paschal Candle. The Service includes a series of Old Testament prophecies, a service of baptismal renewal, and concludes with the reading of the Easter gospel for the first time. Finally, Holy Week culminates with the highest and holiest day of the

church’s year – Easter, the Queen of Feasts, the Resurrection of Je-

sus Christ on Sunday April 8, 2012. The church comes alive with Easter

joy, proclaiming, “Christ Is Risen, Hallelujah at the SON-rise Service at

7:00 a.m. The Sunday School will be hosting the Easter bunch after the

Sonrise service. Finally, no celebration of our Lord’s death and resurrec-

tion would be complete without the celebration of Holy Communion at our

9:30 a.m. Festival Divine Service. The St. Paul Band and Adult Choir will

provide special music for the day.

The services of Holy Week and Easter truly are the center of this congregation’s faith and life. Join

your brothers and sisters in Christ to proclaim God’s salvation – “Christ has died, Christ is risen,

Christ will come again!”

Remember to Worship and Commune during Holy Week/Easter!

The Pastor and the Board of Elders encourage every member of St. Paul to make it a priority to

worship during the special services of Holy Week & Easter. During the past several years in Lutheran con-

gregations, attendance at these services has declined significantly, even though they commemorate the

most significant events of our salvation! Those who do attend comment on how enriching these services

are for renewing their faith and life in Christ. Children and families are especially encouraged to attend

these services. These special services contain some very visual elements that will certainly make an im-

Update From The Board Of Christian Education

As many of you know, Mrs. Shin will not be returning to teach next year. The Board of Christian Education

thanks Mrs. Shin for her years of service to our school, and she will be sadly missed.

The Board has been meeting on a regular basis with regards to Calling a full-time teaching principal. We have been busy reviewing possible candidates, assembling interview questions, assembling background information on our church and school to provide to possible finalists, and reviewing the job duties of the position. On March 18, the Board began phone interviews with potential candidates. We ask for your prayers for God to guide our congregation and the Board in the Call process.

We encourage all members of our congregation to prayfully consider sending your child(ren) to our school for a quality Christian based education. If you enroll your child(ren) by April 15th, $100 of the $150 registration fee will be credited toward the first month's tuition.

The Board would like to thank everyone that helped in any way with the Lutheran Schools Week activities, as well as those that attended any of the events. The meal that the Board prepared after the Sunday service raised over $200, and this money will be used towards curriculum expenses. We would also thank anyone that donat-ed towards the Knowledge-a-thon fundraiser and to Ms. Schneider for organizing it.

Sincerely in Christ,

St. Paul Board of Christian Education Tina Kilgore, Chairperson Steve Doell, Secretary Sarah Cherovsky Christine Merow Baierl Rachel Patrycia

Happy Spring to all! God has given us some great weather the last couple of

weeks! How sweet it is! We thank him every day for this wonderful season! The

4K’s have been working really hard on getting ready for Spring. We’ve been talk-

ing about things that grow, like animals, flowers, and insects. We’ve even made

some giraffes and dragonflies in Art! Both classes have been having a blast in

their Train Centers as well! Some of the students even have gotten the chance to

be a train conductor!

We are very happy to say that next year’s 4K classes have been filling up

fast! Currently we have 23 enrolled and are looking for more! If you know of any

4-year-olds that are ready to come and learn, please pass on St. Paul’s infor-

mation! They may call the office to set up a tour or to talk to a teacher! We can al-

so send out a packet! Our limit is 30, so we are getting close!

I wish all of you a very Happy Easter and remember that HE IS RISEN!!!

He is risen indeed! We can all celebrate this no matter what time of the year it is

because without Him, we could not have this wonderful weather! Have a blessed

Easter! In Christ, Mrs. Budnik

Stewardship News and Views

Every day we have things we have to do - go to work or school, do chores around the house, etc. How often do we complain about them?

How often do we do more than is expected? Every Christian, as a servant of Jesus is expected to go the extra mile - above and beyond the call of duty. This is what Jesus did for us. He suffered, died and rose for us.

Stewardship Committee,

Mark your calendar for the 2nd Annual Rummage, Craft and Bake Sale to be held

August 4th & 5th in the school auditorium. Save all those gently used and no longer

needed items from furniture to toys, tools and books, housewares and sports items.

We are hoping for another great turnout.

GUIDELINES FOR GATHERING STAMPS

Cut the stamps from the envelopes with a 1/4” margin around the stamp. Be careful

no to cut the stamp. The perforations must be perfect. Do NOT pull or take the stamps

from the envelope. Commemorative U.S. stamps, denominations larger than first class

postage, and foreign stamps are especially valuable. DO NOT remove stamps from

albums, older postcards and/or envelopes, or first-day covers. Send in the entire al-

bum, envelope or postcard. This does not include postal cards sold by the post office.

An “old” card is usually from 1930 or before. Christmas stams are not accepted.

QUILTING 2012

What an incredible year the ladies who do quilting had as 430 quilts were

completed. Many of them have been taken to nearby agencies. Quilts were

given to Manna For Live, N.E.W. community Shelter, Marian House, House of

Hope and Freedom House all in Green Bay; the Violence Center in Algoma

and the Wisconsin Division of the Orphan Grain Train in Shawano. The

remainder will go to Lutheran World Relief in the fall.

We again have applied to Thrivent for $250.00. This will give us funds to

purchase sheets and blankets for next year at thrift stores and rummage sales.

The large number of quilts finished would have been impossible without the

ladies who cut and sew material year around at home and the ladies who

came faithfully each week to the meeting room to cut, assemble and tie.

Lutheran World Relief is a ministry of U.S. Lutherans, serving communities

living in poverty overseas. In 2011 Lutheran World Relief distributed the follow-

ing to 26 different countries: 355,621 quilts; 164,727 school kits; 21,234 fabric

kits; 72,610 baby cre kits; and 68,420 pounds of soap.

$150,000 By The 150th Anniversary Pledge Drive

In 2015 St. Paul Lutheran Church and School will be celebrating its 150th anniversary!

This yearlong celebration will kick off in October 2014 with a celebration of the 125th

anniversary of our current church building. We are striving to raise $150,000 by the

150th anniversary. These funds may be used for the elimination of the debt on the

new school building and future projects that will help take our church and school

through the next 150 years. Your help is needed to reach that goal! We hope to see

100% participation from all families in the congregation during the course of this

pledge drive as everyone has a reason to give thanks to God for the blessing of St.

Paul congregation. The 150th Anniversary Pledge Drive Committee will be hosting in-

formational meetings on Thursday, March 2nd, during the Lenten Supper at 6:00 p.m.

and on Sunday, March 25th, after the church service during a special reception.

Please come and join us to find out more about this pledge drive and prayerfully con-

sider how you can help our congregation during this time of celebration and to con-

tinue the ministry of St Paul Lutheran Church and School for the next 150 years and

beyond.
