Did You Know?
The Church says that Lent is a 40-day period of unity with “the mystery of Jesus in the desert.” By sacrificing things such as fasting, spending more time praying and giving to charity, this helps to unite us with Christ’s sacrifice and helps us to resist Satan’s temptation, much like Jesus did in the desert. During Lent, Fridays are to be days of simplicity and abstaining from meat for Catholics over the age of 14.
Canon Law requires fasting on, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday for those 18-59 years old. However, any sacrifices made this Lent should be viewed as a spiritual experience.
“Through fasting and praying, we allow Him to come and satisfy the deepest hunger that we experience in the depths of our being: the hunger and thirst for God.” - Pope Benedict XVI
