Homebound/
Sacrament of the Sick
“Hallow” is a word that means “Holy”. We even say it in the Our Father- “hallowed be thy name”. We celebrate All Saints’ Day on November 1st. This day can also be called “All Hallows Day” because it is the day about all the Holy people - the Saints. The day before All Saints’ Day is called “All Hallows Eve”, just like the day before Christmas is called “Christmas Eve”. Over time, people just started saying “Halloween” instead of “All Hallows Eve”.
Although we go out dressed as Saints, let’s face it. Most people don’t. There are going to be plenty of cutesy costumes, such as fairies and super heroes, but there are certainly going to be witches, goblins, bleeding people, and even multiple devils and demons.
If a parishioner is homebound, please
call the Parish Rectory and
arrangements will be made to bring
them Holy Communion. Whenever

From the Pastor’s Desk
Celebrating Halloween Does the 31st of October ring a bell for you? Does it remind you of the day of your birth? Or maybe the day you were wed? Does it remind you of some other sweet memory? Or maybe some sad one? No matter what this day brings to your memory, it evokes for many the celebration of Halloween – a celebration connected with All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days. These three days together make what is called the “Days of the Dead,” a triduum of feasts either known as Allhallowtide, Hallowtide, or Hallowmas. These days are one season in the year when Christians honor all saints in heaven and pray for holy souls detained in purgatory. Contrary to what some believe, catholiccompany.com argues, “Halloween is a Catholic holiday and does not have its origins in paganism, Samhain, Celtic/Druidic festivals, occult practices, or Satanism. This common misconception is modern anti-Catholic propaganda, with roots going back to the Protestant Reformation, and has no basis in historical fact.” The website continues its argument saying, “English, Irish, and French immigrants to America brought their variety of local Catholic customs with them: dressing up for Halloween comes from the French, jack-o-lanterns come from the Irish (originally carved turnips); and the English begged from door to door for “Soul Cakes,” promising to pray for the departed loved ones of those who gave them these treats – the roots of trick-or-treating. These traditions converged in the American melting pot.” However, it is worth noting that the contemporary version of Halloween has been badly corrupted and hyper-commercialized, but that should not stop Catholics from enjoying Halloween. It is indeed a day to reflect on Christ’s triumph over sin, death, and Satan. It is a day to meditate on our own mortality and duties to God, to shun sin and the devil, to give honor to the saints in heaven, and to pray for the souls of the faithful departed in purgatory. And it is, of course, a day to have fun with joyful feasting and merriment. Happy Halloween!

Presentation of Gifts
Those that are requesting masses for loved ones are the ones that we
are asking to present the gifts at Communion time. Families and
individuals from the parish community will be asked to embrace this
simple act as representation of the whole community, if the requestors
are not at said mass. We started this on September 15th and will
continue the presentation of the gifts in this manner. We ask that
while our ushers are taking up the weekend collection if members of
the family of which whom the mass is for would please head to the
back of church so they will be ready to present the gifts at the end of
the collection.
October Month of the Rosary
As a reminder, October is the month of the Rosary. Please sign up in
the back of church to lead the rosary twenty minutes before each mass
during the month of October.
Planning Ahead
We are thinking ahead, way ahead, on articles to be published in the
February Bulletin. This Bulletin will show pictures and a small article of
various different committees/groups here at St. Patrick’s. We have
started a list, but do not want to leave anyone out, this is what we have
so far: Ushers, Altar & Rosary, Building/Grounds, Finance, Lectors,
Eucharistic Ministers, and Altar Servers (and in no particular order).
Please email Father G at [email protected] or Nadine Maierhofer
@ [email protected] with any other groups that we
might have missed. Pictures will be taken at the Church and/or the
Parish Center. We will be putting a schedule together for a date/time in
December. We realize we are not going to be able to accommodate
everyone’s busy schedule; unfortunately we are only going to have one
date set for each committee/group. Please watch the “monthly” bulletin
in November for your date and time!

Capital Improvement
We are still taking collections for our Capital Improvement Fund. As of the end of July records show that we owe $56,637.57 to pay for Bell Tower. Again, any donation you give can be placed in with the Sunday Collection. We thank you for your kind generosity.
A way to help
Throughout the year as we reflect upon the many blessings bestowed upon us, a great opportunity to thank God for these blessings presents itself. Gifting to St Patrick’s Church is a wonderful way to take advantage of this opportunity. There are many different ways of contributing a gift. Two of the easiest and most direct methods to accomplish this are tax deductible donations of cash and/or shares of stock. Please do not hesitate to contact Edward Jones Investments Financial Advisor, Jonathan Walker, in Marseilles (815-795-3568). Mr. Walker has an account for the church to receive such gifts. Thank you in advance for your much appreciated donations.

Votive Candles
Due to the substantial increase in the cost of providing the votive candles, the Altar and Rosary will be taking over the purchasing of the candles found at the front of the church. Please place your minimum donation of $5 per candle in the collection boxes on the sides of the kneelers. Votive candles maybe lit for any prayer intentions.
