St Patricks Primary School Together in Faith & Learning Week 8 Term 2 2020 Be an Up-stander not a By-stander Many of us have read or seen the photos of a police officer in America kneeling on the neck of a man, who eventually died. He wasnt able to breathe. We now know that the police officer and his friends who stood by and watched have been charged with this mans death. It is a truly sad and horrific moment in time. Lots of us are asking the question what prevented the other officers from stopping their friend from killing the man? Most of us, would think that if I was one of those officers, I would have stopped my colleague. At school, we are encouraging our tamariki to be Up-standers not By-standers when they see their friends teasing another, dropping litter, being dishonest etc. It is hard to get the message across. Many of our students and those at other schools, believe that they cant tell on their friendsbecause that is snitching or somehow wrong. Our message is that good friends remind each other when they are doing something mean or wrong. A good friend STANDS UP for injustice. A good friend SPEAKS UP for those who feel they dont have a voice. Good friends REMIND each other to do the right thing. If we fail at helping our tamariki see this, then they could become bystanders and allow others to be bullied, teased, stolen from or eventually, look the other way when a friend is kneeling on someone elses neck. It takes years of practise to be blind or indifferent to the suffering of others. You have sent your child to a Catholic School so that your child doesnt become blind. We are spending years supporting your child to SEE the secret subtle injustices around them, to HEAR the silent cries of help in the playground or at home, to BE THE VOICE of those who feel they cant speak up, to BE JESUS to their brothers and sisters. As anyone who plays a sport or is learning a new musical instrument knows that, what ever we practise over time, we will eventually get better at that skill. I pray that with your support, our tamariki will continue to practise being Responsible for all they do and say, being Ready to learn and speak up, and be Respectful to all. Blessings Tony PE Uniform The school PE top is available. It is expected that all Yr 1 to 7 students will have one and wear it. The year 8 students this year can wear a blue t shirt if they wish. Uniforms can be purchased https://www.nzuniforms.com/ St Catherine's Friday The year 7 and 8 students will be going to St Catherine's tomorrow, be at school by 8.30am. For their safety and ours, they must come to school first. SUGAR SUGAR AND MORE SUGAR Please dont send your child to school with sweets/ lollies etc. The sugar sits on their teeth all day, slowly rotting them. The image in this photo is of the amount of sugar in this product. It is called Fruit Nuggets. The fruit nuggetsweigh 17grams. 15grams is sugar. Approximately 2 and half teaspoons of sugar. Carrots chopped up are cheaper at the moment and far better for us.

Week 8 Term 2 2020

Be an Up-stander not a By-stander Many of us have read or seen the photos of a police officer in America kneeling on the neck of a man, who eventually died. He wasn’t able to breathe. We now know that the police officer and his friends who stood by and watched have been charged with this man’s death. It is a truly sad and horrific moment in time. Lots of us are asking the question ‘what prevented the other officers from stopping their friend from killing the man?’ Most of us, would think that if ‘I was one of those officers, I would have stopped my colleague. At school, we are encouraging our tamariki to be Up-standers not By-standers when they see their friends teasing another, dropping litter, being dishonest etc. It is hard to get the message across. Many of our students and those at other schools, believe that they can’t ‘tell on their friends’ because that is snitching or somehow wrong. Our message is that good friends remind each other when they are doing something mean or wrong. A good friend STANDS UP for injustice. A good friend SPEAKS UP for those who feel they don’t have a voice. Good friends REMIND each other to do the right thing. ASB SPORTS’ STADIUM (Don’t forget to bring a rain jacket. Rm 1 and 2 walk) Reminder that the school’s sports uniform can be worn to school on Fridays. This is not a mufti day. School uniform is required if you haven’t the correct gear. Navy blue track pants can be worn over the shorts if it is cold. School polar fleeces will probably be required for warmth. If you haven’t purchased a school PE top yet, your child can still use the old blue T shirt until it

no longer fits.

Reminder about COVID 19

Wellington COVID-19 Cases

Should there be any cases in Wellington of community spread, we will ask that parents stay out-side of the school grounds.

Parent voice

We need to know what we did well and what we could have done differently during lockdown please. If we have to go back to online school learning from home, we want it to be a better ex-perience than last time. We won’t know how to improve unless you tell us. Any ideas are wel-come please. School app contact tracing

We allow parents to come into the school grounds and into the buildings ONLY if you sign the register at the school office, OR, show us the App that you have logged into. https://schoolappsnz.co.nz/login/

We allow parents into the school because we trust that you are caring for your health and that of your children. If you are sick, sniffly, coughy, please stay away. Protect us all, even though it may not be COVID-19. Care Pack

We ask that your child has some sanitiser and a hand towel for their personal use. We are doing

our best to prevent the spread of any germs. A personal hand towel helps with this.

We are a Positive Behaviour for Learning School. We encourage our children to be Go getters, this means that they are ready to learn, respectful of people and property and take responsibility for their actions. Ask your children about our new traffic light system that encourages our students to take on leadership and make good choices. This is how our Traffic light system works: • Every class uses the Traffic Light system to monitor DAILY student behaviour. • Every student starts on the green zone each day. • When a student makes positive choices, in particular the ones that you are focusing on that week, THEY get to move their name up to pink – great choices! If throughout the day a student continues to make positive choic-es, ( we link these choices to our PB4L values, the 3RS of being ready to learn, responsible for actions , respectful of people and property) then the student moves up to the yellow light and is a Go getter for the day.

Those on Go Getters 2 or more times a week get to take home a special certificate that acknowledges their efforts. Go Getter certificates are presented in assembly and acknowledged in the newsletter. So keep an eye out for certificates coming home so we can all

celebrate your child/ren’s success.

Nourish Me Style Nachos https://www.nznourish.me/ Here's a healthy take on a family classic. Ingredients: 500-600g Premium beef mince 2 diced onions 2 medium grated carrots 1 tsp. Smoked paprika 1/2 tsp. Chili powder 1 Can chopped tomatoes 1 Can kidney beans 1 Cup Beef Stock 3 Decent handfuls of baby spinach (it will shrink!) 1 cup of peas and corn mixed 1 Avocado - diced or mashed 2-3 wraps OR plain corn chips Directions: In a hot wok with a slosh of olive oil, add onions, mince and spices. Stir frequently until starting to brown. Add in tomatoes, spinach, beans and stock. Continue stirring often. When almost cooked through, add peas and corn. Heat oven - grill on high. Tear up wraps into corn chip sized pieces and place on an oven tray. Grill for 3-4 minutes or until very slightly browned - be careful not to burn them! You can swap these for plain corn chips or use gluten free wraps for a GF meal. Serve in a bowl with avocado on top and "chips" on the side to keep them crunchy. Enjoy!
