The Journey of Faith: Inquiry Do you have questions about faith, religion, and the Catholic Church? Would you like to deepen and enrich your experience of Holy Mass and the Sacraments? Are you curious about the many forms of prayer which are part of our Catholic tradition? Perhaps you are considering Baptism in the Catholic Church, or were baptized in a Christian church of a different denomination. Or perhaps you are a baptized Catholic who has not yet received the Sacraments. If these questions ring a bell or strike a chord in you or someone you know, St. Patrick Parish is offering a special Inquiry event just for you.

Becoming Catholic: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

Adults considering entering the Catholic Church follow a process known as RCIA (The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.) RCIA offers an opportunity to come together to learn more about the faith. There are four stages: Inquiry, Catechumenate, Purification/Enlightenment, and Mystagogy. Each participant is on their own unique faith journey. Together, in community, we pray, share, and learn about the Church as each progresses through the stages of RCIA.

RCIA meet on Monday evenings at St. Patrick Church from 6:30-8 PM.

Liturgical Ministry Formation

The Office of Worship offers six hour formation sessions for new and experienced Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and Readers. In the morning of the first Saturday, ministers are introduced to sacramental theology, particularly that of the Eucharist by Rev. David Pettingill. Next, our presenters who are experts in the field, offer technical and spiritual direction for the minister’s specific liturgical role.

An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith by Barbara Brown Taylor

“ As someone who has been paid to pronounce blessings at weddings and funerals, at baptisms and house blessings, at soup kitchens and foxhunts - as wells a lot of weekly worship services-I think it is a big mistake to perpetuate the illusion that only certain people can bless things. Plenty of people say grace over their meals in their own homes, asking God to bless the food they are about to receive from the divine bounty. A number more bless their children at bedtime, asking God to bring those children safely through the night. Yet there remains a great many people who excuse themselves when asked to pronounce a formal blessing. They are not qualified, they say. If you are one of those people, only you know why. All I can tell you is how much the world needs you to reconsider.” The St. Patrick book discussion group will be discussing Barbara Brown Taylor’s An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith. We meet at 9 AM in Healy Hall to enjoy fellowship and faith sharing as we discuss our weekly chapter. On October 15 we will discuss Chapter 2: The Practice of Paying Attention: Reverence. Each October the Church in the United States celebrates Respect Life Month, and the first Sunday of October is observed as Respect Life Sunday. As Catholics, we are called to cherish, defend, and protect those who are most vulnerable, from the beginning of life to its end, and at every point in between. During the month of October, the Church asks us to reflect more deeply on the dignity of every human life.

This year’s theme, Christ Our Hope: In Every Season of Life, is particularly suited for the times in which we live. The attacks against human life seem to grow more numerous and callous by the day. Despite these challenges, we know that Christ has conquered sin and death once and for all. Through our Christian hope in the Resurrection, we are given the grace to persevere in faith. Our sacrifices on behalf of the Gospel of Life can contribute to the redemption of this current culture of death.

During the 2019-2020 Respect Life Program cycle, we also celebrate the 25th anniversary of the papal encyclical Evangelium vitae (The Gospel of Life), written by St. John Paul II. The Church’s teaching on the value and inviolability of every human life remains an indispensable source of truth for all people. As Evangelium vitae highlights, “together we may offer this world of ours new signs of hope, and work to ensure that justice and solidarity will increase and that a new culture of human life will be affirmed, for the building of an authentic civilization of truth and love” (EV 6). — excerpts from the letter from the Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities, Most Rev.
