Today, Sunday, September 8th is a national holiday in the
United States. Today we celebrate National Grandparents Day!
You will notice that it always appears on the calendar, and
Hallmark certainly has cards for it, but you do not hear much
hoopla about it. National Grandparents Day was officially
established by Congress in 1978 as a national holiday. It is
always celebrated on the 1st Sunday after Labor Day. This
speaks much about us as a society, that we would honor and
cherish our elders and their wisdom so much as to establish
this day to celebrate them.
Pope Francis has, over the years of his pontificate, made
grandparents, and the elderly, a main talking point to
audiences, and especially when he is speaking to gatherings of
young people. The Pope goes out of his way to remind us of the
value of our grandparents and elders. He speaks tenderly of
the influence his own grandmother, Rosa, had on his growth in
faith. In 2015, Pope Francis used his weekly audience
catechesis to highlight the important role that Grandparents
play in our families. If you Google this topic, you will find a
wealth of his insights on the importance of our Grandparents
and elders and their valued place in the Catholic family.
Pope Francis expressed that Grandparents have been
entrusted with the ministry “to convey the experience of life,
the story of a family, the story of a community or even of a
people; to share with simplicity their wisdom and the same
faith which is the most precious legacy!”
“They have the wisdom of life and can tell you things that will
stir your heart.”
Grandparents are transmitters of the faith for many
families. They offer a rootedness and wisdom to their
grandchildren, and young people in general. I know in my
position in Faith Formation in the parish, I meet quite a few
grandparents who are making sure their grandchildren are
being formed in their faith.
So, let us today show our love and gratitude to our
Grandparents and elders. Visit them, call them, give them a
hug, bring them flowers, take them out. Today is a holiday, so
celebrate!
Happy Grandparents Day!

CATECHISTS NEEDED!
ARE YOU CALLED TO BE A TEACHER OF THE FAITH?
Our Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) provides
religious education to approximately 350 St. Patrick’s
parish children. We are always happy to welcome new
catechists and aides to join with us in this very rewarding
ministry! PREP classes begin in early September and run
until early May. Our sessions are on Sunday morning
from 9:15 to 10:20; Monday afternoons from 4:45 to 6:00
and Monday evenings from 6:30 to 7:45. Our levels/
grades are from 1st to 6th. Would you consider
joining with us in this parish ministry? If you could
help at any of these sessions, we would be grateful. Each
catechist follows the Archdiocesan religion curriculum
and has a detailed teacher’s manual. We provide training
and support for new catechists. You do not need to be a
professional teacher for this volunteer position. What you
do need is a love of God, of his Church and his children.
College students and those considering a teaching career
are welcome. (The Archdiocese requires background
checks on all adults who work with or around children.)
Please prayerfully consider being a catechist or aide this
year and reap the rewards of passing on the faith to a new
generation of Catholics! If interested please contact Sr.
Eileen at [email protected] or 610-296-
8899. Thank you and please pray for our parish children!

Is there a non-Catholic you know who has expressed
interest in our faith and becoming a
member of our Church family or,
perhaps, is a baptized Catholic who has
not completed their Sacraments of

evangelizer by telling them of our
parish’s RCIA process, which offers
catechesis and faith formation for adults
in preparation for the Sacraments and
initiation into the Catholic Church.
Sister Eileen will be happy to give
further information and answer any
questions about the RCIA. You can

Baby’s Breath Fundraiser
A Baby’s Breath is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)3
organization that began on August 15, 2000 with a mission
“. . . to help a mother to see her child take his/her first
breath”. It offers life-affirming choices for mothers and their
families through the efforts of caring volunteer advocates. In
addition to its core services, an Independence Program was
begun three years ago to help its clients become productive
and loving parents, independent of government support
services.
As part of its 5th annual golf outing fundraiser,
representatives from A Baby’s Breath will be selling golf ball
raffle tickets in the back of church today to help support this
program. Tickets are $20 each for prizes of $1000, $500,
and $250.
Thank you for your contribution towards their mission of
supporting LIFE!
