Please Pray for our Holy Father’s Intentions for August Universal: That sports may be an opportunity for friendly encounters between peoples and may contribute to peace in the world. Evangelization: That Christians may live the Gospel, giving witness to faith, honesty, and love of neighbor.

August 14, 2016 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Year C

Jer 38:4-6,8-10; Ps 40:2-4,18; Heb 12:1-4; Lk 12:49-53 The Lord came to the aid (Ps) of Jeremiah whose preaching brought upon him rejection and ill treatment (1). For those who take the gospel seriously, misunderstanding and division must likewise be expected (3). Like Christ, we must never grow despondent or abandon the struggle (2) to proclaim and live the truth.

The Costs of Discipleship Today’s responsorial psalm, Psalm 40, is more familiar to us with the refrain “Here am I, Lord.” This “Here am I” is Jeremiah’s great prophetic response to God’s call. But today’s story of Jeremiah and the refrain “Lord, come to my aid!” re-mind us that there are always two sides to following the call of God. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews knew this, too. He reminded his readers that even weighted down with burdens and sins, we can still persevere by keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, who himself knew the shame and pain of the cross, but saw be-yond it to the joy of sitting at the right of the throne of God. Jesus himself gave the disciples a “sneak preview” of a bap-tism that would not be as wondrous as the one in the Jordan that inaugurated his ministry, but would be one of fire and anguish. Today’s words from scripture may not be terribly soothing, but in their honesty and strength we can acknowledge the difficul-ties of daily discipleship, and take comfort in the assurance of our own salvation in Christ.

Treasures From Our Tradition Long ago, a signet ring was an essential part of the wardrobe of influential people. A letter or document would be sealed with hot wax, and a signet ring pressed into the wax would affirm the origin of the document. In the case of the pope, at least from the thirteenth century, the ring was used to seal public documents with hot lead, saving the red wax for private letters. The public documents were called bullae after the Latin name for the lead stamp, and we still call them “papal bulls.” It is not surprising, therefore, that a signet ring has long been bestowed as part of the inauguration of a pope. The ring is called the Pescatorio, or “Ring of the Fisherman.” It reminds the wearer of his link with Peter, and his responsibility to con-tinue the apostolic ministry of “fishing for human beings.” Until 1842 it actually functioned as a signet ring. Now, each pope receives a new gold ring at the beginning of his ministry. It goes on the fourth finger of his right hand and bears some fisherman design, usually St. Peter casting nets from a boat, as well as the pope’s name in Latin. A custom that endures for the pope, but not so much for bishops, is for people being introduced to him to kiss the Pescatorio as a sign of respect for his teaching au-thority. Another enduring custom is for the ring to be smashed and defaced at the pope’s death, originally a way of preventing counterfeit deathbed documents.

Saint Pius X (1835-1914) August 21

Presidential vetoes we understand. But imagine vetoing a papal election! Yet in the conclave of 1903, the Archbishop of Cracow (ironically, a predecessor in that office of Karol Wo-jtyla, the future John Paul II) vetoed the leading candidate on the order of the Austro-Hungarian emperor. Instead, the cardi-nals elected Giuseppe Sarto of Venice as Pius X, the first pope, after a succession of nobles and diplomats, to hail from humble origins. Nor did the papacy alter his endearing simplicity. Tai-lors eventually made his cassock cuffs detachable because he absentmindedly wiped his fountain pen on them, forgetting that his old black cassock had been replaced by papal white! Taking as his motto “To restore all things in Christ” (Ephesians 1:10), Pius condemned the theological innovations called “modernism,” yet dramatically altered the then-common prac-tice whereby people rarely received Communion for fear of unworthiness, mandating early First Communion and urging everyone to frequent reception. Refusing to bless troops assem-bled in Saint Peter’s Square—“I bless peace, not war!”—he died brokenhearted as World War I engulfed “Christian” Europe despite his peacemaking efforts.

Mission Appeal Fr. Binoy Davis, currently assigned to St. Matthew Catholic Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, will be here this weekend for a Mis-sion Appeal. Fr. Binoy will be making his appeal on behalf of the Diocese of Satna in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. It is an eparchy of the Syro-Malabar Church, an Eastern Catholic rite in India that is in full

communion with the pope. The funds collected during his ap-peal will be used for the following purposes; 1. Ongoing formation of missionary priests and sisters: We

conduct seminars and workshops for the missionary per-sonnel for an effective evangelization.

2. Formation of our future missionaries. There are 12 ma-jor seminarians and 18 minor seminarians.

3. Assistance for poor children in their studies. Care and as-sistance to the mentally and physically challenged children who are economically poor.

4. Medical care for the poor. Many patients who visit our dispensaries at Gijwar, Karimatti, Koond, Kailaspur and Dewra are poor.

5. In the formation and accompaniment of families, we con-duct seminars for Small Christian Communities, married couples and for those preparing for marriage.

6. Distribution of Holy Bible in Hindi language to all the Christian families in the diocese.

7. Construction of two churches in two village mission sta-tions of Dewra and Niwari

Please prayerfully consider making a generous donation this weekend.

Religious Education Classes are Starting Soon

The staff and catechists of St. Patrick Church are dedicated to helping your children grow in faith and be closer to God. As parents, you are

the primary educators of your children and are their best teach-ers. Your children learn the most from the example you set when you pray together and actively participate in Mass and the sacraments as a family. Our Religious Education Program is designed to assist you in the faith formation of your children. Enroll your child after all Sunday Masses in August. You may also register your child by stopping by the parish office during normal business hours. First-time students must provide a valid baptismal certificate. Classes begin on Saturday, September 17th and run through May. Class hours are from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

Filipino Breakfast Our next Filipino breakfast will be this Sunday, August 14th, from 8:30 a.m. until… You’ll have your choice of Bangsilog (deep-fried milkfish, eggs and fried rice) or Longsilog (Filipino sausage, eggs and fried rice), including coffee or tea, for only $7.00. See you there!!

Jubilee Year of Mercy Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

August 14, 2016 This Jubilee Year of Mercy bids us share our own experience of Jesus’ mercy with those on what Pope Francis calls the “peripheries”—people who feel marginalized, even unwel-come—inviting them to come home. But with all this mercy, why today’s mayhem? “Do you think I have come to establish peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division” (Luke 12:51). Jesus “breaks down” those “breakups” in painful de-tail—parents, children, even in-laws. “Against” appears eight times in five verses. Jeremiah faced death for bearing witness (Jeremiah 38:4). Can’t we bear at least a small share of the sometimes merciless cost of sharing mercy? The Letter to the Hebrews warns us, keep your “eyes fixed on Jesus” and “so great a cloud of witnesses,” lest we “grow weary and lose heart” as we run “the race that lies before us” (Hebrews 12:1–3). After all, “for the sake of the joy that lay before him,” Jesus “endured the cross” (12:2). Can’t we endure our small crosses for the sake of sharing mercy?
