MEMORIAL DAY MASS

9:00AM

Join us to honor all those who have

died serving our country….

We are a grateful Nation

Memorial Day…a day to remember and give thanks

Not too long ago I saw a sign which read: Home of the free,

because of the Brave! Pray for our troops

Many of you may have also seen this phrase. As we celebrate this Memorial Day weekend we are reminded that we celebrate much more than the unofficial welcome of summer. We observe a traditional observance that began with the May 5, 1868 proclamation of General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic: The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit. On May 30, 1868, the first Decoration Day, now known as Memorial Day, was observed when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington

National Cemetery.

At this time in our nation’s history, this civic holiday is especially important, as many of our young men and women continue to defend our freedom. Their bravery and their selflessness should be remembered with a moment of prayer; a prayer of thanksgiving for the freedom that we share; a prayer of petition asking the Lord’s protection for those who protect us. We are blessed that we can come before the Lord in freedom, to express our faith, to share in the Eucharist, to celebrate our oneness with Christ. We should also pause for a moment in prayer to remember those, whose lives were lost in the battle for our freedom.

No matter what title we may use, the unofficial start of summer, Decoration Day or Memorial Day, we must, indeed,

remember, give thanks and celebrate the brave who have enabled us to live in the land of the free.

May God Bless our Troops and all of us! Father Redcay
