The Parsonage Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Kilmarnock Sunday 26 January Dear Friends, Last Thursday I had to nip into Glasgow, and decided to cut through Buchanan Galleries, coming down the escalator at the far end. I stepped on beside a very smartly dressed young Muslim woman wearing a head scarf, someone who looked as if she might work in an office. Directly behind us were half a dozen or so very loud young lads, in their late teens or early twenties. I was appalled when one of them yanked her head scarf off. As we got to the bottom of the escalator I went and stood beside her as they passed and simply asked: are you ok? She nodded and rolled her eyes. Her response seemed to indicate that she had experienced that sort of aggressive behaviour before.

It was the sort of incident that I relegate to the realms of the television screen. Now some might say that it was in jest, but there was nothing good humoured about it. It was disrespectful and in truth an act of violence.

When we look at our newspapers and other forms of media we are bombarded by man's inhumanity to man, I do realise that there must be a gender neutral way of saying that but... We live in a world, and more importantly in a society where aggression and anger are the norm, and those emotions are not only in our streets but in many of our schools, our workplaces and in our homes.

The question must be asked why can't we allow others just to be themselves, why shouldn't individuals be able to live lives of integrity following their own beliefs, whether they be political, religious, matters of sexuality or whatever else. One of God's greatest gifts to humanity is the gift of freedom of choice, of free will.

Children born into this world have no choice on their birth circumstances, and it is from that point that they grow and develop and make their way in the world their lives being shaped by their particular cultural experiences.

None of us agree all the time, and there are moments when people can be down right infuriating (the voice of experience, Mike thinks I'm a menace most of the time! [that's putting it mildly]) but it is time that we laid aside our differences and learn to be kind and caring.

The image of that young woman will stay with me for a very long while. I wonder what she will tell her children of the place in which they will be brought up?

Yours in Christ,

Revd. Mary JeppRevd. Mary JeppRevd. Mary JeppRevd. Mary Jepp

LENT STUDY GROUP 2020 This year’s Lent Study Course will use the book Happy & Blessed by John Cox, a Lent Study based on the Beatitudes.

Popular author John Cox, brings his open and accessible approach to the challenging nature of these short sayings revealing them as among the most radical of what Jesus had to say.

This five-week course for individual or group study, explores the context of ideas in the Beatitudes, the insights that differing translations bring to them, and how they continue to challenge us in our world today including our attitude to possessions, to loss and forgiveness, to judgement and salvation. Ideal for all of us during Lent. The course will take place on Wednesday evenings from 4 March to 1 April inclusive. Meetings will be in the church commencing at 7.30pm. The book costs £5.55 and if you would like a copy please sign the list on the Welcome Desk.

FAREWELL TO REVD. CANON TOM MONTGOMERY On Sunday 26 January 2020, we celebrated the retirement of Tom Montgomery, our Rector for the past 10 years.

A special Sung Eucharist took place at a jam-packed St. Ninian’s church at 10.30am where the Revd. Canon Prof. David Jasper had presided and the Revd. Mary Jepp had preached. This was followed by refreshments and presentations for all who were able to come to the Hall.

The service and reception were both attended by many guests from previous parishes where Tom had carried out his ministry over the last 40 years.

After a brief review of Tom’s earlier career, there was a more detailed summary of what he had contributed the life of St. Ninian’s and those elements of his ministry for which we were particularly grateful for including:

His ideas, commitment and enthusiasm

His compassion and support at times of difficulty

His commitment to the local community and churches

His work to support local and international charities

His work for the Diocese and other Ayrshire churches

His inspiration and leadership in demonstrating God’s love for us all

As a mark of our appreciation and our gratitude, Tom was presented with a painting of the Lychgate and church entrance with our best wishes for a happy and healthy retirement. This was created by a well-known local artist and will adorn his new abode in Cumnock. We will also pass over to him the proceeds from the Retirement Collection as soon as the sum is known, which he will share between the purchase of something for his new house, and a donation to a Troon charity.

Tom expressed his thanks and best wishes to St. Ninian’s as we go forward with the interregnum, and gifted a cross for the church hall which

had accompanied him throughout his 40 years of service. He also gifted us a replacement Book of the Gospels for use in worship.

ELECTION OF A NEW BISHOP The Right Reverend Kevin Pearson was elected as the new Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway on Saturday 18 January. Bishop Kevin is currently the Bishop of Argyll and The Isles and his election to Glasgow and Galloway represents a historic “translation” of a Bishop from one See to another. The See of Glasgow and Galloway became vacant in 2018 following the retirement of the Rt. Rev Dr Gregor Duncan who had served the diocese as Bishop for eight years. Bishop Kevin will take up his new post at a service of installation later in the year, on a date to be announced in due course.

Bishop Kevin has served as Bishop of Argyll and The Isles since February 2011 and before that was Rector of St Michael & All Saints Church in Edinburgh, Canon of St Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh, Dean of the Diocese of Edinburgh and the Provincial Director of Ordinands (responsible for the discernment and selection process for candidates for ministry). He is also currently the Convener of the Council of the Scottish Episcopal Institute (responsible for the training of those entering authorised ministry) and serves on the provincial Standing Committee of the Scottish Episcopal Church.

Bishop Kevin was elected to Glasgow and Galloway by the Episcopal Synod, a body comprising the Diocesan Bishops of the Scottish Episcopal Church. In accordance with the Church’s canonical process, the right of election had passed to the Episcopal Synod, following previous processes of vocational discernment within the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway.

CREATIVE COMMUNITY GROUP We started back with our first session of 2020 on 4th January with great gusto preparing for a Show we are attending in the spring. We are very lucky to have been given a stall from 5 - 8th March at The Creative Craft Show (featuring The Scottish Quilting Show) in the SEC Glasgow. If you have received any advertising material about the show you will see a small section of the Wall Hanging featured there.

This is a wonderful chance to show our ongoing Community Arts Project which as you will remember started following the churches Mission Action Plan over 5 years ago. Initially, creating the Wall Hanging was the aim and we now continue our work with the Creative Community Group which is free to all in the community to attend. The show also gives us an amazing opportunity to reach out further and advertise more Open Days to view the Wall Hanging and bring people into our community.

As I alluded to at the start of this article there is a lot of preparation required for the show. The stand needs to be designed, we need people to man the stall, plus we will also be doing demonstrations and selling craft kits, which need to be created.

If you feel you can help with any aspects of our work for the Show or during the Show please let us know. Iolanthe is organising the rota for covering the stall 5 - 8th March. Also working on this is myself, Tizzy, Linda and a group of helpers who are focusing on the other areas which need attention.

The Creative Community Group sessions run as usual on the first Saturday of the month but the meeting in March is cancelled as we will be at the Show, and then we meet again on Saturday 4th April from 11.00am - 1.00pm in the Church Hall. Please do come along to any of the sessions. You

will be most welcome. ShonaShonaShonaShona

KNIT N’ NATTER GROUP During the autumn the Knit n’ Natter Group knitted & crocheted items for

Troon Secret Santa. This year, besides giving gifts to the children of Troon, Secret Santa for the first time took Gift Bags to some of the elderly and housebound. Items made included fingerless mitts and woolly hats, each gift bag containing a knitted or crocheted gift.

Campbell Malone, one of the organisers of Secret Santa, said,

“Thank you so much to the St. Ninian’s Knit n’ Natter group for

knitting such lovely ‘winter hats and gloves’ for the elderly Troon folks to be put inside their Secret Santa delivery bags.”

The Group has also been knitting woolly hats for the Fishermen’s Mission at Troon Harbour and Paula Daly from the Mission responded by saying...

“Thank you so much for donating the lovely hats for our fishermen. I have put a few out so far and they have gone to very good homes. The others will follow. I am so pleased you thought of us as they are very much appreciated.”

The Knit n’ Natter Group will continue making items for Secret Santa, woolly hats for the Fishermen’s Mission and also knitting squares for blankets which can be donated to Oxfam. So if you have any odd balls of wool to spare these can be placed at the back of the church, the group are always most grateful for donations of wool.

There are now around a dozen ladies who attend the Group on the last Thursday of each month in the Choir Vestry from 1.45 - 3.45pm and enjoy a good chat and a cup of tea...as well as some knitting! All are welcome.

MESSY CHURCH REPORT The first Messy Church of 2020 was held on Sunday 19 January in Portland Parish Church. There were 16 children and several babies, with twenty parents exploring the theme of David Livingston and Africa.

The session started with a quiz, crafts and games. As usual the highly talented craft team provided a range of items including a 2020 calendar, that would remind the children of the theme at home. Bill Duncan had a Malawian display and he persuaded some helpers to dress in colourful African shirts and sarongs. One hit with the boys was the example of a football created by African children out of plastic bags. It was shown to be fully functional in an impromptu game. There was also a display of cosy baby hats and an opportunity to add some stitches to one hat, Andrew McGurk showing off his mastery of knitting.

Next, in the church, the children gathered at the front for a talk and slide show by the Rev Andrew McGurk, assisted from the audio desk by John McDonald. Adults and children were given an insight into the lives of people in present day Africa and were able to see children wearing the hats and knitwear that had been on display in the Main Hall.

The Messy Church grace was said in church before the boys led an enthusiastic dash to the meal, which was cooked and served by a team of highly efficient ladies from Troon Nazarene, who had come armed with a collection of slow cookers.

The next session is at Our Lady on Sunday 16 February from 4pm - 6pm when the theme will be The Prodigal Son and Saturday 11 April, the full day Eastertainment event in the Walker Hall starting at11 am.

We at St Ninian’s will be hosting Messy Church on Sunday 15 March when the theme will be Joseph. Norma will be most grateful for offers of help with the food for this afternoon.

CHRISTIAN AID I would like to express my thanks to everyone who supported the Christian Aid Bag Pack in Morrison's between Christmas and New Year. A grand total of £1,112.23 was raised.

Also advanced notice that Christian Aid Week will be from Sunday 10 May to Saturday 17 May. There will be more details in the next magazine.

FINANCE REPORT - JANUARY 2020

The first quarter of the financial year (October - December) shows total income of £27,700 and total expenditure of £38,100 resulting in a deficit of £10,400 (before depreciation or investment value movement).

Total income includes £2,600 received for the Stained Glass Window Appeal, most of which was collected as a result of the Gift Day. Also included in the first quarter’s income is £2,100 being the total of the funds raised at the Christmas Fair.

Included in expenditure for the first quarter £10,700 being the final invoice for repairs to the walls and floor of the Sandilands flat which had been damaged by damp. Further expenditure on decoration is expected to be incurred in the second quarter. The other significant first quarter expenditure on buildings maintenance relates to repairs to the window of the disabled toilet in the hall.

PROPERTY REPORT – JANUARY 2020 Most of you will be aware that there was a problem with the Choir and High Altar lighting just before the Christmas services. I am pleased to say that an electrician managed to restore some lighting for the services. The

fault is to be investigated during the coming weeks.

Also it appeared that rain was finding its way to the Flower Vestry ceiling. A roofer was called in to discover the outlet pipe for the rain water pipe was blocked. This has been cleared and I am pleased to report that the roof timbers are now dry.

This is my last report as I am standing down as Property Convenor, but I am pleased to say that Alan Livingstone has taken up the post as Property Convenor.

A small property team has been formed to assist Alan, of which I am part, and I hope to be a useful member.

EPIPHANY IN THE GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH The Epiphany (Θεοφάνεια or Επιφάνια) is the second biggest holiday of the year in Greece and is celebrated on the 6th of January. On the eve of the Epiphany priests are out in the streets blessing each house and the residents. They enter the house and sprinkle holy water by dipping a branch of basil into the holy water bowl.

The day of Epiphany, also called Fota, the big blessing takes place. In the areas that are close to the sea, the priests with a big crowd, head for the water. There at a port site, they bless the sea water and throw a Cross into the sea. Divers, usually young men, dive to find and bring back the Cross to the surface. Everybody returns home taking Holy Water with them. They drink some of it, and sprinkle some onto their homes, businesses or anything of value to the family, to bless it.

FELLOWSHIP It is hard to believe that another session of the Fellowship is nearing an end, but that will be the case after the AGM on Tuesday 3 March. Following a short AGM meeting John O’Donnell will be giving a talk about the work of the Aberlour Trust. This will be followed by a Bring and Share Supper. Please try and support this evening and join together in food and fellowship.

St Ninian’s will be hosting the World Day of Prayer Service in the church on Friday 6 March at 7.00pm. This year the service is prepared by the ladies of Zimbabwe and Revd Mary Jepp and our own Iolanthe

Stack will be taking a role in this service. There will be refreshments in the hall after the service and all are encouraged to come along.

The Summer Suppers will begin again on the first Tuesday in May and full details about the venues will be in the next magazine and the Pew Leaflet.

CRAFT GROUP

Throughout the autumn the Craft Group were making items for the Christmas Craft Stall at the Fair. Several new ideas were tried. This year one of the fun evenings was making Christmas baubles by heating a glass sphere containing small pieces of wax crayons. As the wax was melting it was swirled around the inside the bauble to make patterns.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

Every year on the first FRIDAY in MARCH, Christians around the world (Protestants, Roman Catholics, Orthodox, Evangelicals) of all ages (women, men, young people and children) gather in small groups and large congregations using the same

basic form of worship, written by women of a different country each year on a theme chosen by the World Day of Prayer International Committee.

The Service for 2020 has been prepared by the Christian women of Zimbabwe

This year the service in Troon will be held in St Ninian’s Church on

Friday, 6th March 2020 at 7.00pm

‘Rise, take your mat and walk’ Written by Christian women of Zimbabwe

All Welcome!

‘Lord teach us to pray’

This year we pray with women of Zimbabwe for

All organisations who are actively promoting peace, education and civic awareness

Improvement of social services and opportunities for training, education and sustainable economic development.

The women of Zimbabwe, following their courageous and hardworking pioneers of World Day of Prayer Zimbabwe, who are teaching their communities to pray, love and forgive.

Zimbabwe means 'House of Stones' and it is located in Southern Africa. It is a landlocked country with an area of 390,757 square kilometres (150,872 square miles) lying between the Limpopo River in the south and the mighty Zambezi River in the north. It is bordered by South Africa to the south, Botswana to the west and southwest, Zambia to the northwest, and Mozambique to the east and Northeast.

The Stained Glass Window Appeal is now CLOSED

As you see the sum of £20,811 was a little short of the target set of £25,000 at the close.

Some events that were planned did not take place owing to timing clashes with other local events in Troon , or lack of resources both internal and external.

Nevertheless, we are pleased with the outcome and wish to offer our grateful thanks to all donors, volunteers, planners and everyone who helped in any way to achieve the sum we raised.

Progress with Fundraising for Holy Trinity Kilmarnock 26th January 2020

The Kilmarnock Appeal Fund status remains very healthy with about 2 years of payments in the reserves.

As we have prioritised the Events and Fundraising for the Stained Glass Window Appeal, we have allowed the Kilmarnock to ‘simmer on the back burner’ for the last year.

With Mary Jepp leaving HTK at Easter time, we are not planning to transfer further funds after this date until their situation regarding a replacement becomes clearer.

Again thank you to all who have donated and supported Kilmarnock over the last 4 years.

INTERREGNUM KICK-OFF - WEDNESDAY 12 FEBRUARY 2020 At the January Vestry Meeting, it was agreed that shortening the interregnum process and having a new Rector in place without any unnecessary delay was a top priority for 2020. We were advised that no formal activities should begin until Tom had officially retired from his post. However, we were encouraged by Mary Jepp at our AGM to give some thought as to what characteristics and background our new Rector should have, and to have conversations amongst ourselves to clarify and focus our ideas. The Vestry has agreed that a wide participation in the process to find someone suitable for us is essential. We have been warned that based on recent experience of other churches in our Diocese, the process could take some time until the right person is identified and in post. Towards the end of last year, we received a letter from our Primus and Interim Bishop -The Most Revd Mark Strange, offering us the opportunity to host a priest from Tennessee USA for some weeks in the summer. As we have an unoccupied Rectory, and there would be no significant additional costs for us other than making the Rectory habitable for a short-term stay, the Vestry were of the opinion we should accept this offer. We are pleased to advise that the Rev Sandy Webb will be joining us for just under 2 months commencing in June 2020. Sandy is spending part of his sabbatical leave here in our Province whilst he studies questions about church growth. His current positions are Rector of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion in Memphis and trustee of St. Mary’s Episcopal School. We believe his experience will be beneficial to us in determining our own congregational mission and ministry looking forward. As Tom has now officially retired, we can progress with setting up our plans and programme for the interregnum. Our Interim Dean, The Revd Gordon B. Fyfe, St Columba’s Largs, has kindly agreed to meet the Vestry at the scheduled meeting on 12th February 2020 to explain the process in some detail and to indicate the diocesan requirements. A document entitled our ‘Parish Profile’ will be prepared which will enable applicants for Rector at St. Ninian’s to get a good idea of who we are, how we are set up and what our future expectations might be. We have already had time to study recent profiles from other churches, and we have copies of our past document from ca. 10 years ago. We will be setting up a working team and hopefully identifying resources to canvass opinions from the congregation and prepare this document. We are confident that our church, and grounds, Rectory, and the participative way we run our ministry here will be attractive to those seeking a new position. Watch this Space!

ROY HARDWICK 30.04.32 – 29.12.19

Roy was born in 1932 in Rothwell, near Wakefield, the only son of Maurice and Elizabeth. As well as being a diligent pupil at the local school, he spent a lot of time playing football, and leaning to play the trumpet and the piano. On leaving school, he started an apprenticeship at Yorkshire Imperial Metals, and an interest in metals remained with him throughout his life. He spent his National Service in the RAF, where he specialised in photography, before returning to a new department doing technical investigations into metals.

He met Kath at a wedding in 1953, and they married three years later in the church they both attended. Their daughter, Wendy, was born in 1964, but tragically she died at only six and a half, following heart surgery. Roy’s career, though, continued to blossom. Although he hadn’t gone to university, Roy was now accruing awards and accolades both in this country and abroad, for all his inventions.

Despite all his extra work and study, Roy and Kath continued to enjoy an active social life, dancing, and playing golf and tennis with family and friends. In 1974 they were blessed with the opportunity to adopt their baby son, Christopher, and when Roy was headhunted for a job in America, the whole family lived there for six happy years, enjoying the totally different life-style, and making life-long friends.

Roy was invited to take on a new job with ICI, which is when they settled in Troon, and came to be faithful members here at St. Ninian’s. They became competitive members of the Bowling Club, holidaying with them, and cruising in foreign places. Roy joined the BP Guild, and the Probus Club which he served as President.

Sadly, they were dealt another cruel blow, when Christopher died of heart problems in 2007. However Roy continued to serve the world of

metallurgy, publishing 39 papers and registering 26 Patents, as well as writing an extended thesis on explosive welding, which he donated to the Bodleian Library.

It was distressing to see this once brilliant man struggling so in his latter years, but there were still flashes of intelligence and humour in his conversations. He remained faithful to the end, always appreciating the opportunity to receive communion, and to participate in the prayers. He died peacefully, and is now with his risen Lord.

DAVID ALEXANDER SUTHERLAND 24.10.44 – 15.01.20

David was born as a ‘Son of the Manse’ in Paisley, where he attended school, proving a very able pupil. His mother suggested Dentistry as a rewarding occupation and he duly attended Glasgow University, finally achieving his Doctorate. David was always interested in church music, but cars also featured prominently. The possession of a car proved an added attraction when it came to courting the young lady, Gill, who was to become his wife. The fact that she was a ‘daughter of the manse’ made her an even more appropriate choice, and they were married by both fathers in 1971.

David worked for some years in Arran, as well as many other practices, but he thoroughly immersed himself in his family, indulging his great sense of fun, and ingenuity in play with them, using their own made-up language. He and Gill would take Hazel and Laura, on holiday all over Scotland so that they really got to know their homeland. The arrival of grandchildren allowed David to play the clown with them as well as being somewhat subversive, - but what would you expect from a pony-tailed, motor-biking grandfather?

David was a very creative person; he developed a great skill in calligraphy; could fix almost anything, could craft words beautifully, but his great love was church music. He studied Music in Liturgy, and he learned to play the organ, slipping in to St. Ninian’s regularly to practice, and unwittingly entertain those tending the grounds.

He supported many local causes, including the Rotary, and the Coastal Rowing Group. He raised funds for Colitis Scotland, and served on the Committee of the Royal School of Church Music in Scotland, but he was notably a man of great faith; a faith which helped him cope with his illness and increasing incapacity. The hymns he chose for his funeral reflected his complete belief in the resurrection life to come. May he rest in peace, and rise in glory.

DEADLINE

THE DEADLINE FOR THE NEXT MAGAZINE IS SUNDAY 5 APRIL

All copy please to Linda Rayner at [email protected]

DOJAY MEEK 16.04.29 – 04.12.19

Dojay was born in Edinburgh, as the youngest of four children. Her mother died when she was just four years old, and her older sister, Anne took on the care of her wee sister. She went to St. Dennis School, and started playing the piano at an early age. When war broke out she was evacuated to Dumfriesshire, and then attended the Mount Boarding School where she made several life-long friendships. She went on to Edinburgh to do an Arts degree in history, but soon switched to studying music. She continued with her LRAM in London, before moving back to Edinburgh to teach.

While attending musical evenings in Colinton, she became friendly with one of the violin players, Joe, and they married in 1954, at St. Cuthbert’s, her home church. Joe was actually an Engineer by day, and when he took a job with ICI they moved through to Ayrshire. They lived for a while in Kilwinning where daughter Ann was born. They then moved to Troon with their second daughter, Jennifer, and son Robert.

I first got to know Dojay when I joined the choir when we first came to Troon in the 1970’s. She had been a faithful member of the alto section for many years, but she was also very well known to many of the young people in Troon to whom she taught piano at Marr College, as well as privately. She was a very fun-loving person, although, even then, a very anxious one as well, but she always managed to see the best in all the people she encountered. She helped by playing the piano at the Wednesday morning

services at the Old Parish, and was learning to play our organ, before her vascular dementia became more pro-nounced. She was supported at home for a while before going into care in Ayr, and then in Westbank in Troon, where she was visited regularly by her family and friends.

She is remembered with fondness by those who knew her here, but we rejoice that she is now at rest with her Father in Heaven.
