PLANNING A WEDDING?
Marriage has been raised by Christ
to the dignity of a sacrament.
To be married in the Catholic Church means far
more than to have the wedding ceremony in a church building.
To be married in the presence of God’s people means a man and
a woman are joined together in a lasting bond of love.
If you have become engaged recently and are plan-
ning a wedding at St. Michael’s, you should contact the par-
ish office as soon as possible. Wedding plans should be made
about one year in advance.
We may walk many roads when we search for God, and He
leads us all the while. The men we honor today were not Jews.
The Messiah wasn’t coming for them, not in the minds of Je-
sus’ contemporaries. These men were astrologers. They were
adept at reading portents in the sky, a practice condemned in
the Mosaic covenant. Still, to the best of their knowledge and
awareness, they were seeking the truth. This truth led them to
journey from their own homeland to honor a king they’d never
met, one they couldn’t be sure truly existed. “‘We saw his star
at its rising and have come to do him homage.’” Who do you
know seeks God so tenaciously?
“Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,” the Gospel tells us.
Who are the seekers in your own life? Maybe it’s your cau-
tiously curious co-worker, the neighbor who unexpectedly
found peace on a yoga retreat, or your desperately angry child
who has chosen, for now, to go their own way. Perhaps they’re
not overtly headed for Jesus now, not yet. But they may well be
seekers of truth in ways we didn’t expect. Our invitation is to
listen, inquire, and give directions when appropriate.
The magi and modern-day seekers can inspire us as well. When
is the last time you sought God’s truth so tenaciously? As be-
lievers, it can perhaps be easy to become desensitized to the
Christmas season and to the miraculous reality we recently
celebrated. Mass may have been lovely, but so was the succu-
lent roast beef, the crisp smell of evergreen, and the warm glow
of family. Consider asking yourself, “God, do I know you as
well as I should? Would I journey as far as the magi to meet
You, if I could? Do I journey to meet You daily in prayer?
What do those answer say about me, and about our relation-
ship?” Perhaps we, like the magi, can once again be
“overjoyed” at seeing the Light of the World.
SPONSORS/GODPARENTS
Sponsors and Godparents serve a religious
role therefore their faith and religious practice
must be the primary consideration parents use
when choosing godparents for their children.
Church law helps the choosing process by
stating these requirements: “…those who
serve as godparents must have completed their sixteenth year,
be a Catholic who has been Confirmed, and who leads a life in
harmony with the faith.” Parents can avoid hurting the feelings
of family and friends by not choosing people who cannot fulfill
these basic requirements for a godparent or sponsor.
A sponsor certificate is a document which indicates that a per-
son fulfills the requirements needed to serve
as a godparent or sponsor. The certificate
describes the faith and practice of the per-
son as they are at the present time. When
selected to be a godparent the individual
should contact the parish where he/she is
currently living, registered and attending
Mass each week, for a sponsor certificate.

“FROM STRESS TO PEACE”
Day of Reflection
Saturday, January 25, 2020
There is no person who does not experience
stress in the different areas of life. This day of
prayer will focus on the process needed to move out of the whirl-
wind of stress into the realm of peace. It will begin with a defini-
tion of “stress” and the levels of stress; and will continue with peo-
ple stress, life-changing stress and spiritual stress. Each session
will end with suggested coping mechanisms and, of course,
prayer… a clenched fist then opens to an open hand able to give,
receive and share.
10:00am – 4:00pm (Registration begins at 9:15am)
Registration deadline: January 18th, 2020
Lunch included in the program
Suggested Donation: $45 per person
