Rafael Jiménez, Misa Panamerica: “Los Perales”.

1. ¿Qué llevabas conversando? Me dijiste, buen amigo.

Cristo Resucito Luis Bojos

ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCHVER ES CREER

SEEING IS BELIEVING Seeing is believing! Since cellphone screens connect us

instantly to social media, live TV, and loved ones’ faces near and far, “Doubting Thomas” could be our patron saint: “Unless I see, I will not believe!” But how comforting for any of us who share Thomas’s doubt, or love “doubters” who do, to see how kindly Jesus responds. By offering the very evidence that Thomas demanded, Jesus doesn’t scold Thomas, but seems to understand such skepticism. Could Jesus have been thinking of us, who long to believe that “Jesus is risen!” but see so much suffering, and perhaps even cause some, that we wonder, how could something so wonderful be true? In today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles, the risen Jesus’ healing love comforts through disciples who love others. In Revelation, “our brother John” doesn’t just claim he saw Jesus alive, but passes on Jesus’ life-giving words, “Do not be afraid.” Seeing Jesus in others is believing!

TODAY’S READINGSFirst Reading — A large number of people gathered, bringing the sick, and all were cured (Acts 5:12-16).Psalm — Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting (Psalm 118).Second Reading — Do not be afraid. I am the first and the last, the one who lives (Revelation 1:9-11a, 12-13, 17-19).Gospel — The risen Christ comes to his disciples with peace and the Spirit. The absent Thomas doubts (John 20:19-31).

—Erasmo

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONAn ancient title for this Sunday is Dominica in

Albis, or “Sunday in White.” During the Easter Vigil, the newly baptized are invested with a white garment, a sign that they have put on Christ. At one time, the garments were worn for a full week of celebration and reflection, and on this Sunday the newly baptized would appear in their robes again in their new place among the faithful for Eucharist.

In later centuries, the energy of new life at Easter was largely forgotten, and this Sunday was renamed “Quasimodo Sunday,” or “Low Sunday.” In recent years, with the recovery of the insight that Easter is the privileged time for celebrating and renewing baptism, there is nothing “Low” about this Sunday. At a week’s distance, the beauty and grace of our Easter celebration is sustained by joyful alleluias, the blessing and sprinkling of holy water, and the comfort of the Lord’s presence to us. He is risen, and he summons us together, opening up the scriptures for us, breaking the bread, filling us with new life.

In today’s Gospel we hear Jesus say three times, “Peace be with you.” This was a common greeting, but the disciples were hiding in fear so they needed reassurance. Jesus gives them that reassurance in three ways: his resurrection, forgiveness of sins, and a blessing for future disciples.

The disciples had seen Jesus crucified and were afraid any of his followers would be treated the same way. So when Jesus appeared to them, he showed them his wounds and let them touch him. He wanted to show them that he was not a ghost; he had risen from death and death has no more power over him. They can now take courage because they will share in the Resurrection themselves. Breathing on them, he bestows the Holy Spirit, source of our courage.

That leads to the second reassurance, forgiveness of sins. Jesus died to take away our sins; now he shares that with his disciples. Anyone troubled by guilt can be forgiven. The disciples themselves probably felt that need, since they had deserted Jesus and one even denied knowing him. He now sends his apostles with the mission to free others from sin. We too can forgive others (and ourselves) knowing that God has forgiven them and us.

Finally, the story of Thomas and his doubts about Jesus’ resurrection gives us some hope. Jesus blesses those who “have not seen and have believed” (John 20:29). We usually think the apostles were “more” blessed for having seen and heard Jesus. But Jesus reverses that expectation; we are blessed, even two thousand years after the Resurrection.

INCREASED OFFERTORYLast weekend we introduced St. Michael’s

parishioners to our Increased Offertory Program called “Celebrating our Home—Building for Tomorrow.” Increasing our first offertory collection is vital to supporting our need for a Pastoral Center. It will be the key to increasing ministries and services that our families require and also desire. Come visit with us at one of the Town Hall meetings which will take place in St. Rose Hall after the 9:30am and 11:30am masses on Sunday, May 5 to learn more about this program.

COHERENCE AND BELONGINGThe kind of wholeness I’m describing as the

Universal Christ is a forgotten treasure of the Christian Tradition that our postmodern world no longer enjoys and even vigorously denies. I always wonder why, after the rise of rationalism in the Enlightenment, Westerners would prefer such incoherence. I thought we had agreed that coherence, pattern, and some final meaning were good. But intellectuals in the last century have denied the existence and power of such great wholeness—and in Christianity, we have made the mistake of limiting the Creator’s presence to just one human manifestation, Jesus.

The implications of our selective seeing have been massively destructive for history and humanity. Creation was deemed profane, a pretty accident, a mere backdrop for the real drama of God’s concern—which we narcissistically assumed is always and only us humans. It is impossible to make individuals feel sacred inside of a profane, empty, or accidental universe. This way of seeing makes us feel separate and competitive, striving to be superior instead of deeply connected and in search of ever-larger circles of union.

I believe God loves things by becoming them. God loves things by uniting with them, not by excluding them. Through the act of creation, God manifested the eternally out-flowing Divine Presence into the physical and material world. Ordinary matter is the hiding place for Spirit and thus the very Body of God. Honestly, what else could it be, if we believe—as orthodox Jews, Christians, and Muslims do—that “one God created all things”? Since the very beginning of time, God’s Spirit has been revealing its glory and goodness through the physical creation. So many of the Psalms assert this, speaking of “rivers clapping their hands” and “mountains singing for joy.” When Paul wrote, “There is only Christ. He is everything and he is in everything” (Colossians 3:11), was he a naïve pantheist or did he really understand the full implication of the Gospel of Incarnation?

God seems to have chosen to manifest the invisible in what we call the “visible,” so that all things visible are the revelation of God’s endlessly diffusive spiritual energy. Once a person recognizes that, it is hard to ever be lonely in this world again.

Fr Richard Rohr, Center for Action and Contemplation

“The sacred deposit of truth must be safeguarded. It is absolutely vital that the Church never for an instant lose sight of the holy patrimony of truth inherited from the Fathers ... This is the certain and unchangeable doctrine to which the faithful owe obedience.”

Pope John XXIII

Please join us for this opportunity to learn more about RCA's hybrid, two-day-a-week, classical program in                               the Catholic tradition. Regina Caeli is a Christ-centered tutoring center where the daily life of the tutors and                                   students revolves around and is permeated by the teachings of Jesus Christ. Our primary goal is to aid the                                     students in knowing, loving, and serving God by providing them with a “classical style” of education so they                                   learn how to think critically and become lifelong learners. We are committed to faithful adherence to the                                 Holy Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church.

Is your goal to raise Christ-centered children who can critically think and make good distinctions? Do you homeschool and desire more accountability for your children?

Would you like to spend less time preparing for your homeschool lesson plans and  more time implementing your homeschool plans?

IGLESIA CATÓLICA SAN MIGUEL ARCÁNGELPEACE BE WITH YOU

Our Gospel reading today depicts the disciples in a terrifying moment. They have locked their doors, huddling together in safety at a time when the Lord has transformed the entire course of human events. Jesus has risen from the dead. He has destroyed death and unlocked eternal life. But who can fully grasp all of this? Not even Thomas, one of the twelve devoted companions of Jesus, understands what has happened. Those of us who have never faced maltreatment for our faith can only imagine the disciples’ panic. Unimpeded by their bolted doors, Jesus visits his frightened friends. His appearance must have been shocking, since he says to them “Peace be with you” not once, but twice. If the disciples hoped Jesus would come back to them, they might have wished he would appear as a victorious leader or glorious king. Instead, he comes as they have known him and most need him: as a companion, and he brings with him the eternal peace of God. They might have wanted a bodyguard; instead he gives them peace.
