    1. Eran cien ovejas queIhabíaIen su rebaño, Eran cien ovejas queIamante cuidó; Pere una tarde al contarlas todas, Le faltaba una, le faltaba una y triste lloró. Las noventaIy nueve dejóIen el aprisco Y por la montaña a buscarla fue;

    LaIencontró llorando, temblando de frío. Ungió sus heridas, la cargóIen sus hombros yIal redil volvió.

    2. EstaIantiguaIhistoria vuelveIa repetirse, TodavíaIhay ovejas queIerrabundas van;

    Con el alma rota van por los collados, Temblando de frío, vagandoIen el mundo, sin Dios y sin luz. Pero toda vía existen pastores Que por la montaña a buscarlas van, Y cuando las hallan, las traen al camino, Al camino bueno, la Verdad y Vida queIes CristoIel Señor.

    3. Si túIeres un alma que sufre laIangustia De sentirse sola en cruel lobreguez,

    Hoy te traigo nuevas, nuevas de gran gozo, Es el evangelio que salvaIy redime y te da la luz.

    SeaIen la montaña oIen la cumbreIagreste, Ya fueraIen el valle oIen abismo cruel,

    Cris-toIel Buen Pastor quireIen pastos verdes confortar tu alma, vendar tus heridas y darte la paz.

    JOHN THE BAPTIST Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the “precursor” of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John’s basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John’s legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: “You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory” (Isaiah 49:3). John’s humility—“I am not he”—was surpassed only by that of his Lord Jesus, the humble servant who followed.

    JUAN EL BAUTISTA Ya que el 24 de junio de este año cae en domingo, la Iglesia tiene la oportunidad para una celebración más vibrante del nacimiento de Juan el Bautista, a quien se le describe como el último de los profetas del Antiguo Testamento y también como el puente entre el judaísmo y el cristianismo. Comúnmente a Juan se le conoce como el “precursor” de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Todos los evangelios narran el mensaje básico de Juan: Arrepiéntanse, el Reino de Dios está cerca. Uno más grande que yo está cerca. Aunque él era un predicador itinerante, vestido con piel de camello, que comía saltamontes; el legado de Juan es uno de verdadera realeza. Sus orígenes son parecidos a aquellos anunciados por Dios por medio del profeta Isaías “Tú eres mi siervo, Israel; en ti manifestaré mi gloria”. La humildad de Juan, “Yo no soy él”, fue superada por la de su Señor Jesús, el siervo humilde a quien siguió.

    EUCHARISTIC ADORATIONAdoration is the first attitude of man acknowledging that he is a creature before his Creator. It exalts the greatness of the Lord who made us and the almighty power of the Savior who sets us free from evil. Adoration is homage of the spirit to the “King of Glory,” respectful silence in the presence of the “ever greater” God. Adoration of the thrice-holy and sovereign God of love blends with humility and gives assurance to our supplications.

    —Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2628 St. Michael is expanding our hours of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on the first Friday of every month in the chapel from 8:30AM (immediately following the 8:00AM Mass) to 8:00PM. Please consider joining us in silent prayer during the day by signing up for an hour. Call the receptionist with your commitment at (972) 542-4667 ext 104.

  • ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCHTREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s midsummer day! We have the advantage of celebrating one of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar on a Sunday this year. There are only three “nativity” feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and today’s birth of the Baptist. Today’s date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own child’s advent, but of Elizabeth’s child. We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong traditions around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people staying up all night, lighting “St. John’s fires” in the long summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most interested in the custom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist’s own city. People there will leap into the sea between midnight and dawn to honor John. Why not find your way to a pool, a lake, or a sandy beach today and plunge in to recall your baptism? It’s a tradition!

    Welcome two new Deacons to St Michael Family

    Deacon Jose and Mercedes Vasquez with Bishop Burns.

    (from left) Samantha, Yoli, Deacon Andrew, Colin, Leah and John, with Bishop Burns.

    SYMPTOM OF SEPRATIONFirst the fall, and then the recovery from the fall, and both are the mercy of God. —Julian of Norwich (c. 1343 –c. 1416) [1]

    It is in falling down that we learn almost everything that matters spiritually. As many of the parables seem to say, you have to lose it (or know that you don’t have it) before you will really seek it, then find it, and fittingly celebrate (see all three parables of Luke 15). The message is sort of hard to miss.

    It seems that we must fail, and even “transgress,” and then need mercy, forgiveness, and love because of that very transgression. Up to then, all God talk is largely academic and formal. We don’t really know love until we need love. Until then we have no way of knowing that the long, lonely distance between God/Reality and ourselves is overcome and fully spanned from the other side.

    The common “myth of transgression” found in universal literature operates on many levels. (By myth I mean an archetypal message, expressed in story, that has many layers of meaning beyond the literal.) Both the Hebrew and the Christian Scriptures reveal transgression to be the most common pattern of human transformation (consider Adam and Eve, Moses, Jacob, Jesus, Paul, and Peter). The old must always be revealed as inadequate or even wrong for the new to be born. Our first attempt to love God by following rules is eventually revealed to be much more love of self and love of some kind of order—but we can’t know that yet! (See Philippians 3:6+.) It is our failure to live up to these egoic attempts at love that drives us toward an ever-higher love, where we are not in charge but actually in love!

    The actor here is what some call the trickster, the clown, the anti-hero and, in biblical literature, “the sinner” who is again and again shown to be the hero, especially in the stories of Jesus. “Her many sins have been forgiven her or she would not have shown such great love,” says Jesus of “the woman who was a sinner” (Luke 7:47). The law-abiding Pharisee is deemed ridiculous while the grasping tax collector, with no spiritual resume whatsoever, goes home “justified” (Luke 18:9-14). We must deal with this. It is indeed shocking, but only to the self-satisfied ego.

    Do you realize how counterintuitive this is? Do you realize how hopeful this is? The playing field is now utterly leveled. It is our mistakes that lead us to God. We come to divine union not by doing it right but by doing it wrong, as we all most surely do anyway.

    We must take to heart, brothers, from what we were created, who we were and what kind of creatures we were when we entered the world, as if from a tomb and from utter darkness. Having prepared for us bountifully before we were born, He Who fashioned us and created us brought us into His world. Since, then, we owe all this to Him, we ought to give Him thanks for everything.
