A message from Fr. Jarlath...

THE SACRED TRIDUUM

The Sacred Triduum, commonly referred to as Holy Week, consists of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. During these days “the Church solemnly celebrates the greatest mysteries of our redemption, keeping by

means of special celebrations the memorial of her Lord, crucified, buried, and risen.”Our liturgical team has exciting plans in place to ensure these celebrations are fitting, sacred and spiritually enriching.I am delighted to share with you that Fr. J. Patrick Foley, ph.d. will be the homilist at all those liturgical celebrations. Fr. Foley was here at our parish in January 2012 for a five-day parish mission. He was most inspiring, and many have requested that we have him back among us.Fr. Foley is a diocesan priest, ordained in 1973 and has served in a variety of settings: parish and campus ministry, administration, high school and college teaching. From early on he has been involved with directing retreats, parish missions, days of recollection and similar events. Since 1995, these have been the focus of his ministry. He is typically “on the road” some forty weeks every year, visiting dioceses, religious communities and parishes across the country. When not traveling, he is writing and reflecting further on the themes of spiritual formation and Christian life in our time.In addition to degrees in philosophy and theology, Fr. Foley has earned a m.a. in speech and drama from the Catholic University of America, and an m.a. and ph.d. in Formative Spirituality from Duquesne University. This wonderful education is one of many gifts with which God has blessed him and which enrich his ministry as retreat director.I know that you will extend a warm “St. Max Welcome” to Fr. Pat Foley.

Meet The Hernandez Family This beautiful family will be the owners of the

7th Habitat for Humanity of Ventura County home sponsored by Habitat to the Max.

The funds that we raise this year will allow us to build their home in Santa Paula. Maria & Ramiro and their two children currently live in a one-bedroom garage which is so poorly constructed there are air and water leaks throughout. The makeshift kitchen has plumbing and electrical problems and the exterior overgrowth harbors pests.

Both Ramiro and Maria work hard to support their family. Ramiro currently commutes to northern California working in construction, or locally in agriculture. Maria works in housecleaning part-time when not caring for the children.

Habitat to the Max works with Habitat of Humanity of Ventura County to provide a “hand up” for each homeowner family which invests “sweat equity” hours in the construction of their home, purchased with a no interest mortgage through Habitat for Humanity.

We need your help to give the Hernandez family a “hand up” by allowing them to own a safe, dignified, and affordable home.

Reflecting on God’s Word

One of the earliest pictures of Jesus I can remember portrayed him at prayer in the garden of

Gethsemane. I still see his hands, clasped tight. They spoke to me of an inner struggle long before I knew about his words, “Father, all things are possible to you. Take this cup away from me, but not what I will but what you will” (Mark 14:36). More than any other scene in the Gospels, this one brought home what it meant to say Jesus was truly man.Today’s Gospel has been called John’s version of the agony in the garden. The word agony (agonia in Greek) means struggle, and we can hear the struggle in Jesus’ awareness that “the hour” he has spoken of before in John’s Gospel, beginning at Cana, has finally arrived. It is the hour of his being lifted up—the hour of both his glory and his crucifixion. It is why he came into the world, and yet we hear him say, “I am troubled.” We hear him wrestling with himself, asking for release from the hour, but then recognizing that it holds “the purpose for which I came.”Hebrews affirms this when it says “he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence” (5:7). He was able to bear the suffering and become the source of eternal salvation for all who listen to him and follow in his steps.

PARISH REGISTRATIONWe welcome our new parishioners to their newspiritual home. You enrich us with your presence!

We invite all new parishioners to register:name:_______________________________address: _____________________________city/zip: _____________________________phone: ______________________________email: ______________________________

You may drop this registration form in the office or in the offertory basket at any weekend mass.

You may also register by:• e-mailing your information to [email protected]• calling our parish receptionist at 818-991-3915• visiting our web site at www.stmaxchurch.org

Did you know that demographic studies estimate that more than ⅓ of all Catholics are not registered in a parish? If you are not registered in our parish, please consider doing so. Also, please encourage your friends and family to register!

Registration is important because:• If a parish doesn’t know who is out there, how can

it adequately serve the needs of all—especially singles, divorced or young families who may not see the need to register?

• When the services of the Church are needed—such as for a wedding, Baptism or funeral—it is easier if the person is registered.

• Registered parishioners receive helpful information about our parish.

Why shouldn't assisted suicide be legalized? Legalized assisted suicide contradicts the primary purpose of law, to protect our weakest members. It corrupts the medical profession, whose ethical code calls physicians to serve life and never to kill. The voiceless or marginalized in our society—the poor, the frail elderly, racial minorities, millions of people who lack health insurance—would be the first to feel “pressured” to kill themselves.

What about competent, terminally ill people who say they want assisted suicide? Suicidal wishes among any members of our society should be treated with counseling and suicide prevention, the terminally ill included. When their pain, depression and other problems are addressed, there is generally no more talk of suicide. If we respond to the terminally ill by offering them lethal drugs, we have made our own tragic choice as a society that some people’s lives do not matter.

What about the high cost of healthcare? Healthcare can be expensive. The answer is better care, not encouraging death. Once assisted suicide is a legal option, and far less expensive than most treatments, the temptation will be great to label patients with lingering illnesses as economic liabilities. Will patients be coerced to choose death to keep costs down? The answer is yes!

Why are people with disabilities worried about assisted suicide? The disabled experience prejudicial attitudes on the part of able-bodied people, including physicians, who incorrectly assume they have little or no “quality of life.” Such prejudices could easily lead families, physicians and society to encourage death for people who are depressed and emotionally vulnerable as they adjust to life with a serious illness or disability. In this instance, how can we say suicide is a “free choice”?

Doesn’t assisted suicide allow people to die when they choose, surrounded by family? Many patients given a prognosis of dying within 6 months live much longer. It is not an exact science. SB 128 does not require patients to inform their families of their suicidal wishes when obtaining the overdose medication. There is no requirement for witnesses or assistance while taking the medication and dying, so many people end up dying alone

Is the Catholic Church alone in opposing the legalization of assisted suicide? No, we join with senior groups, advocates for the elderly and disabled, medical experts, suicide-prevention professionals and a long list of organizations that are all part of Californians Against Assisted Suicide.

What is the view of the medical profession? The American Medical Association holds that “physician-assisted suicide is fundamentally incompatible with the physician's role as healer.” The AMA, along with the American Nurses Association, American Psychiatric Association and dozens of other medical groups, have urged the Supreme Court to uphold laws against assisted suicide, arguing that the power to assist in taking patients’ lives is “a power that most health care professionals do not want and could not control.”

What can I do to stop Physician-Assisted Suicide? First, find out more about assisted suicide and its effects on our families and our culture at noassistedsuicideca.org. Then, stand up for the lives of our frail elderly and infirm by encouraging your legislators to vote NO on physician-assisted suicide. Visit archla.org/sb128 to find your legislator and more today.

Why Not Physician-Assisted Suicide?

• Every person ever created has infinite dignity from the moment of conception through death because each person is created in the image and likeness of God. This dignity cannot be taken away or diminished regardless of disability, infirmity or illness.

• A person, no matter how great his or her need, is never a burden. It is our obligation, as members of the human community, to care for those most in need. We take on this obligation willingly, understanding that what we do for the least person we do for Christ. “The quality of a society...is judged by how it treats elderly people and by the place it gives them in community life.” - Pope Francis

• Providing care for someone at the end of life is a requirement of human dignity. Care includes nutrition and hydration (food and water, even when provided through feeding tubes or other medical assistance, unless it becomes burdensome), cleanliness, warmth, and prevention of complications from confinement to bed.

• Medical treatments include medications, procedures and interventions meant to cure, treat symptoms or prolong life. Careful stewardship of life does not demand that we always use every possible means to prolong life. Treatment can be refused, by a terminally ill patient, when its burdens outweigh its benefits for that patient. We may reject particular treatments because the treatments are too burdensome; but, we must never destroy a human life on the ground that it is a burden.

• Assisted suicide intentionally brings about death through the use of overdose of medication. Euthanasia and assisted suicide are always gravely wrong. Refusing or withdrawing treatment can be moral when a patient or his or her proxy determine that the treatment is no longer helpful or is causing great pain or suffering or will result in extraordinary expense. “A society where the elderly are discarded carries within it the virus of death.” - Pope Francis

Tips to help protect children from sexting

Before buying your child a cell phone, set rules for its use, including what sort of information and images are

appropriate to share via text. Know what safeguards are available on your child’s phone, such as turning off and/or blocking texting and picture features. Talk to

your child about the possible social, academic, and legal consequences of sexting. They could face humiliation, lose educational opportunities, and get in trouble with the law. Encourage your child to not be a bystander or an instigator. If he or she receives a “sext,” discuss why it is important that he or she not forward the image to

anyone else. Remind your child that they can talk to you if they receive a nude picture on their cell phone. Report any nude or semi-nude images that your child receives

to law enforcement or contact: www.cybertipline.com

ATTENTION VOLUNTEERSAny adult who works with children in the

Archdiocese of Los Angeles must be fingerprinted and attend a Virtus® child abuse awareness class.

Information on child safety is located in the breezeway.

Parents: for your children’s safety, please accompany them to the restrooms during Mass.

heard because of his reverence.” Hebrews 5:7

Pray out loud all your needs and thoughts to God as Jesus did…trust you too will be heard!
