Pastor’s Pondering
Full disclosure, Fall is my favorite time of the year. I am grateful
for the lack of humidity, the chill in the air that makes a camp
fire so delightful. I love the brilliant colors of the foliage, the
crunch of freshly picked apples, and the fact that baseball, foot-
ball, hockey and basketball are all going on. I realize that the
cold and darkness are coming, and that winters in Maine can be
long for those of us who do not snowmobile or ski. However, I
have been taken aback by the number of people the past week or
so who are so fixated on the dread of winter. They are not so
much disturbed by what is happening now as they are paralyzed
about what is to come. We may have the resources to relocate to
avoid winter, but no amount of prayer, complaining or anger will
lessen a Maine winter. We have no control over it, so living in
distress about the future and ignoring the wonderful aspects of
the present is not productive and rather silly. There is something
in our future that we are able to influence, and that is our salva-
tion. Today’s scriptures remind us that the choices we make now
condition us to meet God and will be used by God to evaluate
our discipleship. The Bible offers some rather specific things that
we should be attending to in order to be judged worthy. Para-
doxically, while many are consumed about how to get through
the winter, far fewer intentionally consider what they need to be
saved. I am not suggesting that we live in dread of salvation,
worried that a slight mishap has doomed us. Yet, we cannot ig-
nore the mandate that we live as disciples, obeying the com-
mandments, helping one another, and growing in our love for
God and the things of God. We will not be able to plead igno-
rance that we did not know what God expects of us. So, we live
in the present, enjoying the fullness of God’s blessings and op-
portunities, so that we be with God forever. May each of us find
the balance between complacency and scrupulosity so that we
may live fully now, and for eternity in the Kingdom of Heaven.

VOCATION VIEW “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” If you ask the Lord this question in prayer, are you ready to respond with a joyful “yes” or will you turn from Him with a heavy, unyielding heart. Consider following Christ more closely as a priest or in consecrated life. Contact Father Seamus Griesbach at 207-773-6471; or email: [email protected]; Website: www.portlanddiocese/vocations; Facebook: VocationsME.
"Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure
in heaven; then come, follow me." At that statement his face fell, and he
went away sad, for he had many possessions. Jesus looked around and
said to his disciples, "How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter
the kingdom of God!" - Mk 10:21c-23
