1 The Good News is that we have all been invited to the Kingdom, to be disciples. It's a life-changing invitation, and like so many other such invitations, it requires a great deal of deliberation and discernment. In this Sunday’s Gospel, crowds of people are following Jesus. They saw him as their leader, going to Jerusalem to take on the Romans and religious leaders who had oppressed them or failed to serve their needs. They were enthusiastic for this revolutionary saviour and his coming Kingdom. In the light of such enthusiasm Jesus’ challenges are like a bucket of cold water. If anyone comes to me without hating . . . father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his [or her] own life" (Luke 14:26). Hating? Can anyone imagine a less appropriate Gospel for the Jubilee Year of Mercy? Jesus exaggerates to jolt us into confronting life-changing challenges. He tells them they have to make hard choices in his favour. (You can’t ‘have it all’ with Jesus). He tells them they must face suffering and challenge. (For Jesus’ followers ‘life is not always easy.’) He tells them to think hard and long about the cost of following him. (No impulse buying with Jesus.) He tells them they must detach themselves from their possessions. (Don’t we deserve it all?) Or rather is he treating them with the most profound respect? These people have come with a minimal level of commitment. Maybe they admired him. Maybe he was the political or social leader they craved. Maybe they had been fed or healed and wanted more. All these are a superficial to a relationship. In asking them for a commitment that costs not less than everything, Jesus is asking them, and us, for the same level of commitment he offers to us! He has taken up his cross. He has left all for the sake of us. Indeed, he has loved deeply, and passionately and he believes we are capable of responding in like. The Good News is that we have all been invited to the Kingdom, to be disciples.

(For Jesus’ followers ‘life is not always easy.’)

He tells them to think hard and long about the cost of following him. (No impulse buying with Jesus.)

He tells them they must detach themselves from their possessions. (Don’t we deserve it all?)

Or rather is he treating them with the most profound respect? These people have come with a minimal level of commitment. Maybe they admired him. Maybe he was the political or social leader they craved. Maybe they had been fed or healed and wanted more. All these are a superficial to a relationship. Beatitudes for Fathers

Blessed are the fathers who have learned to laugh, for it is the music of the child’s world.

Blessed are the fathers who refuse to compare their children with others, for precious unto each is the rhythm of his own growth.

Blessed are the fathers who understand the goodness of time, for they make it not a sword that kills growth, but a shield to guide their children.

Blessed are the fathers who can say “no” without anger, for comforting to the child is a security of a firm decision.

Blessed are the fathers who accept the awkwardness of their growing children, letting each child grow at his/her own pace.

Blessed are the fathers who are teachable, for knowledge brings understanding and understanding brings love.

Blessed are the fathers who love their children in the midst of a hostile world, for love is the greatest gift of all.

Blessed are fathers today on their special day and every day as they fulfill the real needs of their children with love and understanding.

St Mary’s School News…

This fortnight’s value is ‘Compassion’, the teachers will be talking to the children about this value in the coming fortnight.

Father’s Day we enjoyed a breakfast on Friday followed by a liturgy in the hall led by Year 4.

Art Prize: Our twelve finalists art works have been delivered to the CSO, we look forward to hearing how our submission goes at the end of the term.

National Migrant and Refugee week – Last week, each morning, Year 6 started the day with a prayer remembering all refugees and new Migrants to our beautiful land. Year 4 happened to be writing about unforgettable moments and Ahmed from 4P wrote the following piece that we thought was very worthy of our reflection given our focus for the week: “The moment I went to Australia was golden and here is why. First, I love exploring new places. Second, I saw my parents happy and that made me happy. I was tired, I was exhausted but I was joyful. Lastly, I could get away from devasting, horrible, cruel war and that is why moving to Australia was golden.”

Family week I would like to share with you words of wisdom of Pope Francis on parents: “Affirm the heroes regular men and women who care for their infirm loved ones, miss a night of sleep and still roll into work the next day are the ‘hidden heroes’ and the ‘hidden saints’ of today. These models of caring are all around us. Let’s not forget to affirm them as we learn what it means to live a life of service for others”. Kind Regards, Sharon Kelly (REC)

St John’s School News…

On Tuesday 23rd

August, Father David visited the Year 1 Classrooms to talk about the New Testament bible stories. Father talked about the Prodigal Son and reminded us of the importance of saying sorry and showing forgiveness to others. He also spoke briefly of two additional bible stories: the Good Samaritan and the Widow that Gives.

Father John Barry presided over two class masses for grades 2, 3, 4 & 5 and the mass for the Assumption of Mary. The year 3 students loved the songs for their mass, with the song “You are Mine” being a favourite. When asked what their favourite part of the mass was, it was interesting that many said the homily and the sharing of the Eucharist.

The Feast of the Assumption is one of two holy days of obligation and the mass was well attended by parishioners and students. A special thanks is extended to all the teachers who prepared their students to participate fully in the singing and reading.

On Friday morning at 7.30am, SJB will hold a Father’s Day Liturgy to celebrate all the wonderful things our dads have done for us. The children are very excited and looking forward to showing how much their dads mean to them.

Kind Regards Linda O’Brien (REC)

23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time – 4th September 2016

1st Reading (JB): Wisdom 9:13-18

A reading from the book of Wisdom

Who can comprehend the will of God?

What man can know the intentions of God? Who

can divine the will of the Lord? The reasonings of

mortals are unsure and our intentions unstable; for

a perishable body presses down the soul, and this

tent of clay weighs down the teeming mind. It is

hard enough for us to work out what is on earth,

laborious to know what lies within our reach; who,

then, can discover what is in the heavens? As for

your intention, who could have learnt it, had you

not granted Wisdom and sent your holy spirit from

above? Thus have the paths of those on earth been

straightened and men been taught what pleases

you, and saved, by Wisdom.

The word of the Lord All: Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm: Ps 89:3-6. 12-14. 17

R. In every age, O Lord, you have been our

refuge.

You turn men back in to dust and say: 'Go back,

sons of men.' To your eyes a thousand years are

like yesterday, come and gone, no more than a

watch in the night. R.

You sweep men away like a dream, like grass

which springs up in the morning. In the morning it

springs up and flowers: by evening it withers and

fades. R.

Make us know the shortness of our life that we

may gain wisdom of heart. Lord, relent! Is your

anger for ever? Show pity to your servants. R.

In the morning, fill us with your love; we shall

exult and rejoice all our days. Let the favour of the

Lord be upon us: give success to the work of our

hands. R.

2nd Reading (JB): Philemon 9-10. 12-17

A reading from the letter of St Paul to Philemon

Receive him, not as a slave anymore, but as a very

dear brother.

This is Paul writing, an old man now and, what is

more, still a prisoner of Christ Jesus. I am

appealing to you for a child of mine, whose father I

became while wearing these chains: I mean

Onesimus. I am sending him back to you, and with

him - I could say - a part of my own self. I should

have liked to keep him with me; he could have

been a substitute for you, to help me while I am in

the chains that the Good News has brought me.

However, I did not want to do anything without

your consent; it would have been forcing your act

of kindness, which should be spontaneous. I know

you have been deprived of Onesimus for a time,

but it was only so that you could have him back for

ever, not as a slave any more, but something

much better than a slave, a dear brother;

especially dear to me, but how much more to you,

as a blood-brother as well as a brother in the Lord.

So if all that we have in common means anything

to you, welcome him as you would me.

The word of the Lord All: Thanks be to God

Acclamation: Ps 118:135

Alleluia, alleluia!

Let your face shine on your servant, and teach me

your laws.

Alleluia!

Gospel (JB): Luke 14:25-33

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke

All who do not renounce their possessions cannot

be my disciples.

Great crowds accompanied Jesus on his way and

he turned and spoke to them. 'If any man comes to

me without hating his father, mother, wife,

children, brothers, sisters, yes, and his own life

too, he cannot be my disciple. Anyone who does

not carry his cross and come after me cannot be

my disciple. 'And indeed, which of you here,

intending to build a tower, would not first sit down

and work out the cost to see if he had enough to

complete it? Otherwise, if he laid the foundation

and then found himself unable to finish the work,

the onlookers would all start making fun of him

and saying, "Here is a man who started to build

and was unable to finish." Or again, what king

marching to war against another king would not

first sit down and consider whether with ten

thousand men he could stand up to the other who

advanced against him with twenty thousand? If

not, then while the other king was still a long way

off, he would send envoys to sue for peace. So in

the same way, none of you can be my disciple

unless he gives up all his possessions.'

The Gospel of the Lord

All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

1st Reading (Wis 9:13-18) Without the gift of divine wisdom we would be utterly unable to fathom the

mysteries of the universe, the meaning of history, and the mind of God. 2nd Reading (Philemon 9-

10;12-17) Paul urges Philemon to take Onesimus his former slave back as a brother. Gospel (Lk 14:25-

33) Being a disciple of Christ involves self-renunciation – we must be prepared to accept the cost.
