Message from Pope Francis: We have all been shocked and saddened by news reports of the attacks of innocent people in Paris. Pope Francis has delivered an emotional address via an Italian religious TV station stating: “I feel deeply touched and grieved. I don’t understand. But these things are hard to understand; things done by human beings. That’s why I am deeply touched, grieved and I pray”. “I am very close to the beloved French people, I am close to the relatives of the victims and I pray for all of them. There is no justification for such things” Kind regards Sharon Kelly (REC)

Parliament House What an exciting morning the Civics and Citizenship Team had at Parliament House with Premier Mike Baird. The girls, Alice Lovett, Grace Morrissey & Zara Howes were invited to have a tour of Parliament House, explore his office, ask questions and enjoy a morning tea not only with Mike Baird but many schools on the peninsula. The girls had a wonderful time and found the impromptu 2 minute speech that they had to prepare both fun and challenging. The topic they had to discuss was, ‘Who is an inspirational leader’. The girls gave it their best, however just missed out on being the winners. Kind regards Fiona de St Germain (REC)

EXTRAORDINARY JUBILEE OF MERCY announced by our Holy Father Pope

Francis

Starting on December 8, 2015 (our parish feast day) and concluding on

November 20, 2016;

Q. What is the purpose of this “extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy? A. The Announcement of the Jubilee of Mercy was made by Pope Francis on Friday, March 13, 2015 at St Peter Basilica Dear brothers and sisters, I have often thought of how the Church may render more clear her mission to be a witness to mercy; and we have to make this journey. It is a journey which begins with spiritual conversion. Therefore, I have decided to announce an Extraordinary Jubilee which has at its centre the mercy of God. It will be a Holy Year of Mercy. We want to live in the light of the word of the Lord: “Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful” (cf. Lk 6:36). And this especially applies to confessors! So much mercy! This Holy Year will commence on the next Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and will conclude on Sunday, 20 November 2016, the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe and living face of the Father's mercy. I entrust the organization of this Jubilee to the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization, in order that it may come to life as a new step on the Church’s journey in her mission to bring the Gospel of mercy to each person. I am confident that the whole Church, which is in such need of mercy for we are sinners, will be able to find in this Jubilee the joy of rediscovering and rendering fruitful God’s mercy, with which we are all called to give comfort to every man and every woman of our time. Do not forget that God forgives all, and God forgives always. Let us never tire of asking forgiveness. Let us henceforth entrust this Year to the Mother of Mercy, that she turn her gaze upon us and watch over our journey: our penitential journey, our yearlong journey with an open heart, to receive the indulgence of God, to receive the mercy of God. Q. Pope Francis has been asked: Why a Jubilee of Mercy today? A. In the sermon or homily in St Peter’s Basilica on Saturday, 11 April 2015, Pope Francis said: “Simply because the Church, in this time of great historical change, is called to offer more evident signs of God’s presence and closeness. This is not the time to be distracted; on the contrary, we need to be vigilant and to reawaken in ourselves the capacity to see what is essential. This is a time for the Church to

rediscover the meaning of the mission entrusted to her by the Lord on the day of Easter: to be a sign and an instrument of the Father’s mercy (cf. Jn 20:21-23). For this reason, the Holy Year must keep alive the desire to know how to welcome the numerous signs of the tenderness which God offers to the whole world and, above all, to those who suffer, who are alone and abandoned, without hope of being pardoned or feeling the Father’s love. A Holy Year to experience strongly within ourselves the joy of having been found by Jesus, the Good Shepherd who has come in search of us because we were lost. A Jubilee to receive the warmth of his love when he bears us upon his shoulders and brings us back to the Father’s house. A year in which to be touched by the Lord Jesus and to be transformed by his mercy, so that we may become witnesses to mercy. Here, then, is the reason for the Jubilee: because this is the time for mercy. It is the favourable time to heal wounds, a time not to be weary of meeting all those who are waiting to see and to touch with their hands the signs of the closeness of God, a time to offer everyone, everyone, the way of forgiveness and reconciliation. May the Mother of God open our eyes, so that we may comprehend the task to which we have been called; and may she obtain for us the grace to experience this Jubilee of Mercy as faithful and fruitful witnesses of Christ.”

Q. What is the motto of this Holy Year? A. Merciful like the Father is the “motto” of this Holy Year (Section 10) Merciful like the Father, therefore, is the “motto” of this Holy Year. In mercy, we find proof of how God loves us. He gives his entire self, always, freely, asking nothing in return. He comes to our aid whenever we call upon him. What a beautiful thing that the Church begins her daily prayer with the words, “O God, come to my assistance. O Lord, make haste to help me” (Ps 70:2)! The assistance we ask for is already the first step of God’s mercy toward us. He comes to assist us in our weakness. And his help consists in helping us accept his presence and closeness to us. Day after day, touched by his compassion, we also can become compassionate towards others. (14)

7

Q. What is asked of us in this Year of Mercy? A. Open our hearts to those living on the outermost fringes of society ‘Let us rediscover the corporal works of mercy, for they are ‘the criteria upon which we will be judged’ 15. In this Holy Year, we look forward to the experience of opening our hearts to those living on the outermost fringes of society: fringes which modern society itself creates. How many uncertain and painful situations there are in the world today! How many are the wounds borne by the flesh of those who have no voice because their cry is muffled and drowned out by the indifference of the rich! During this Jubilee, the Church will be called even more to heal these wounds, to assuage them with the oil of consolation, to bind them with mercy and cure them with solidarity and vigilant care. Let us not fall into humiliating indifference or a monotonous routine that prevents us from discovering what is new! Let us ward off destructive cynicism! Let us open our eyes and see the misery of the world, the wounds of our brothers and sisters who are denied their dignity, and let us recognize that we are compelled to heed their cry for help! May we reach out to them and support them so they can feel the warmth of our presence, our friendship, and our fraternity! May their cry become our own, and together may we break down the barriers of indifference that too often reign supreme and mask our hypocrisy and egoism! It is my burning desire that, during this Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. It will be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty. And let us enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience of God’s mercy. Jesus introduces us to these works of mercy in his preaching so that we can know whether or not we are living as his disciples. Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. And let us not forget the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort the afflicted, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead. We cannot escape the Lord’s words to us, and they will serve as the criteria upon which we will be judged: whether we have fed the hungry and given drink to the thirsty, welcomed the stranger and clothed the naked, or spent time with the sick and those in prison (cf. Mt 25:31-45). Moreover, we will be

asked if we have helped others to escape the doubt that causes them to fall into despair and which is often a source of loneliness; if we have helped to overcome the ignorance in which millions of people live, especially children deprived of the necessary means to free them from the bonds of poverty; if we have been close to the lonely and afflicted; if we have forgiven those who have offended us and have rejected all forms of anger and hate that lead to violence; if we have had the kind of patience God shows, who is so patient with us; and if we have commended our brothers and sisters to the Lord in prayer. In each of these “little ones,” Christ himself is present. His flesh becomes visible in the flesh of the tortured, the crushed, the scourged, the malnourished, and the exiled… to be acknowledged, touched, and cared for by us. Let us not forget the words of Saint John of the Cross: “as we prepare to leave this life, we will be judged on the basis of love”. [12] Jesus proclaimed “The Year of the Lord’s favour” or “mercy” 16. In the Gospel of Luke, we find another important element that will help us live the Jubilee with faith. Luke writes that Jesus, on the Sabbath, went back to Nazareth and, as was his custom, entered the synagogue. They called upon him to read the Scripture and to comment on it. The passage was from the Book of Isaiah where it is written: “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good tidings to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and freedom to those in captivity; to proclaim the

year of the Lord’s favour” (Is 61:1-2). A “year of the Lord’s favour” or “mercy”: this is what the Lord proclaimed and this is what we wish to live now. This Holy Year will bring to the fore the richness of Jesus’ mission echoed in the words of the prophet: to bring a word and gesture of consolation to the poor, to proclaim liberty to those bound by new forms of slavery in modern society, to restore sight to those who can see no more because they are caught up in themselves, to restore dignity to all those from whom it has been robbed. The preaching of Jesus is made visible once more in the response of faith which Christians are called to offer by their witness. May the words of the Apostle accompany us: he who does acts of mercy, let him do them with cheerfulness (cf. Rom 12:8). To be continues next week Q & A for Jubilee of Mercy by the Australian

Catholic Bishops Office -Q & A draws on the statements by Pope Francis.

First Sunday of Advent – 29th November 2015

NOTE: Readings for the Freshwater Family Mass will be taken from the Children’s Lectionary

1st Reading (JB): Jeremiah 33:14-16

A reading from the prophet Jeremiah

I will cause a good seed to spring forth from David.

See, the days are coming - it is the Lord who speaks

- when I am going to fulfil the promise I made to the

House of Israel and the House of Judah: 'In those

days and at that time, I will make a virtuous Branch

grow for David, who shall practise honesty and

integrity in the land. In those days Judah shall be

saved and Israel shall dwell in confidence. And this is

the name the city will be called: The Lord-our-integrity.'

The word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm: Ps 24:4-5. 8-9. 10. 14

R. To you, O Lord, I lift my soul.

Lord, make me know your ways. Lord, teach me

your paths. Make me walk in your truth, and teach me: for you are God my Saviour. R.

The Lord is good and upright. He shows the path to

those who stray, he guides the humble in the right

path; he teaches his way to the poor. R.

His ways are faithfulness and love for those who

keep his covenant and will. The Lord's friendship is

for those who revere him; to them he reveals his

covenant. R.

2nd Reading (JB): 1 Thessalonians 3:12 - 4:2

A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the

Thessalonians

When Christ comes may he strengthen your hearts in holiness.

May the Lord be generous in increasing your love

and make you love one another and the whole

human race as much as we love you. And may he so

confirm your hearts in holiness that you may be

blameless in the sight of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus Christ comes with all his saints.

Finally, brothers, we urge you and appeal to you in

the Lord Jesus to make more and more progress in

the kind of life that you are meant to live: the life

that God wants, as you learnt from us, and as you

are already living it. You have not forgotten the

instructions we gave you on the authority of the Lord

Jesus.

The word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation: Ps 84:8

Alleluia, alleluia!

Lord, show us your mercy and love,

and grant us your salvation.

Alleluia!

Gospel (JB): Luke 21:25-28. 34-36

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke

Your redemption is near at hand.

Jesus said to his disciples: 'There will be signs in

the sun and moon and stars; on earth nations in

agony, bewildered by the clamour of the ocean

and its waves; men dying of fear as they await

what menaces the world, for the powers of

heaven will be shaken. And then they will see the

Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and

great glory. When these things begin to take

place, stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is near at hand.'

'Watch yourselves, or your hearts will be

coarsened with debauchery and drunkenness and

the cares of life, and that day will be sprung on

you suddenly, like a trap. For it will come down

on every living man on the face of the earth.

Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength

to survive all that is going to happen, and to stand with confidence before the Son of Man.'

The Gospel of the Lord.

All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
