S t. Mary’s Volleyball is coming off a big week that included having records broken and set along the way, as well as

a huge win over rival St. Edward’s. Last week started off with Lauren Holman

setting a new St. Mary’s record for both total blocks and block solos in a four-set match as the middle blocker totaled 10 total blocks and four block solos in the loss to McMurry. Holman’s stance at the net has her currently ranked third in the Heartland Conference for blocks per set at 1.26, totaling 14 block solos

and 30 block assists so far this season. The week also marked the Rattlers’ first

victory over St. Edward’s since the 2007 season in a thrilling, four-set battle. The Battle of the Saints saw libero Victorria Martinez tie her own record for the No. 2 spot for the four-set match digs record at 33. The Hilltoppers also saw a career-best 16 kills out of right side hitter Melissa Heft.

Helping the Rattlers go 1-1 for the week earned Martinez her second straight Heartland Conference Libero of the Week honor, the fifth of her career. The junior continues to lead the league in digs per set at 6.17, totaling 216 digs in 35 sets played.

With a 4-6 overall record and a 2-1 conference mark, the Rattlers are currently tied for the No. 4 rank in conference standings.

Today’s doubleheader has the Rattlers facing Heartland Conference member Texas A&M International (1-10, 0-4 in conference) and Lone Star contender West Texas A&M. The Buffaloes of West Texas A&M are currently ranked No. 12 in the nation with a 9-3 overall record that gives the Rattlers a chance for an upset.
