The Gospel of Luke tells us one of the most powerful of Jesus’ parables - the story of the Good Samaritan. The goal of the reli- gious quest is often described as immortality or eternal life. Humanity has always chafed under the limitations of mortality, and people have found in religion the means to transcend the death which seems to proscribe the possibilities of human existence. A lawyer asks Jesus one of the most important questions a man or woman can: “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Luke 15:25) Jesus referred the lawyer to the law (Luke 10:26). Then the lawyer asked Jesus for an interpretation of the law concerning the meaning of the word “neighbor” (Luke 10:29). Jesus did not interpret the law by citing other laws, as would have been customary. Rather, He interpreted the law by telling a parable. The priest and the Levite in the parable were faced with an interpretation of the law. The law stated that no priest “shall make himself unclean for any dead person among his people” (Lev 21:1). This would probably also apply to the Levites because they served in the Temple. Since the person attacked by robbers in the parable was “half-dead” (Luke 10:30), may have looked dead, or may have been close to death, the priest and the Levite had to decide if the law of having mercy on the afflicted (Lev 19:16) took precedence over the law of ritual cleanness. They decided that ritual neatness took precedence. Jesus said they were wrong. As much as God desires sacrifice and the rit- ual purity that must accompany sacrifice, He desires mercy even more (Mathew 12:7) mercy for all people. This means everyone is our neighbor. We deal with the same issue today as we struggle to put mercy ahead of judgment (Jas 2:13).Life is not just a matter of loving God but of loving the Lord our God with all our hearts, all our souls, all our strength, and all our minds (Luke 10:27). How do we know whether we love God with all our being? A good sign of love of God is whether we love our neighbors as ourselves or not. St. John in his letter says, “For whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen” (1 John 4:20). How do we know whether we love our neighbors? We love them if we are willing to spend an extravagant amount of time, energy, and money on them. We love our neighbors if we are willing to give hands-on, sacrificial service to them, as did the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:33-35). We love our neighbors if we are willing to lay down our lives for them (1 John 3:16), even if they are our enemies (Romans 5:8). We love our neighbors if we love as the crucified Lord loves. Consequently, we love our neighbors by grace, not by any power of our own. If you love as Jesus loves, you love your neighbor and you love God with all your heart. Live a life of love in Jesus. Fr. My dear Children, Sisters & Brothers,

Where does justice end and charity begin? Are we required to give to the poor in justice or in

charity? As we accompany Jesus firmly on his way to Jerusalem we come across this beauti-

ful incident which is only to be found in today’s Gospel. The Gospel of Luke tells us one of

the most powerful of Jesus’ parables - the story of the Good Samaritan. The goal of the reli-

gious quest is often described as immortality or eternal life. Humanity has always chafed

under the limitations of mortality, and people have found in religion the means to transcend

the death which seems to proscribe the possibilities of human existence. A lawyer asks Jesus

one of the most important questions a man or woman can: “What must I do to inherit eternal

life?” (Luke 15:25) Jesus referred the lawyer to the law (Luke 10:26). Then the lawyer asked

Jesus for an interpretation of the law concerning the meaning of the word “neighbor” (Luke

10:29).

Jesus did not interpret the law by citing other laws, as would have been customary. Rather,

He interpreted the law by telling a parable. The priest and the Levite in the parable were

faced with an interpretation of the law. The law stated that no priest “shall make himself

unclean for any dead person among his people” (Lev 21:1). This would probably also apply

to the Levites because they served in the Temple. Since the person attacked by robbers in the

parable was “half-dead” (Luke 10:30), may have looked dead, or may have been close to

death, the priest and the Levite had to decide if the law of having mercy on the afflicted (Lev

19:16) took precedence over the law of ritual cleanness. They decided that ritual neatness

took precedence. Jesus said they were wrong. As much as God desires sacrifice and the rit-

ual purity that must accompany sacrifice, He desires mercy even more (Mathew 12:7) —

mercy for all people. This means everyone is our neighbor. We deal with the same issue

today as we struggle to put mercy ahead of judgment (Jas 2:13).Life is not just a matter of

loving God but of loving the Lord our God with all our hearts, all our souls, all our strength,

and all our minds (Luke 10:27).

How do we know whether we love God with all our being? A good sign of love of God is

whether we love our neighbors as ourselves or not. St. John in his letter says, “For whoever

does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen” (1 John

4:20). How do we know whether we love our neighbors? We love them if we are willing to

spend an extravagant amount of time, energy, and money on them. We love our neighbors if

we are willing to give hands-on, sacrificial service to them, as did the Good Samaritan (Luke

10:33-35). We love our neighbors if we are willing to lay down our lives for them (1 John

3:16), even if they are our enemies (Romans 5:8). We love our neighbors if we love as the

crucified Lord loves. Consequently, we love our neighbors by grace, not by any power of

our own. If you love as Jesus loves, you love your neighbor and you love God with all your

heart. Live a life of love in Jesus.

VIRTUE OF GIVING There is one man in this whole world who gave without expecting any-thing in return, who gave for the benefit of others, who gave without anyone telling him to. This man has made the ultimate sacrifice for us all. God has given us his son Jesus Christ; he has made the ultimate sac-rifice by having his son die on the cross for our sins. Today, what father would ever want his son to have the death of Jesus Christ on the cross? Any father would only want the best for his son, but God knowing that our redemption was more important, handed his Son over to us. We can never be like God, but we can learn from his loving care and good kindness. Like God we too must be able to love and freely give. We are just mere mortals in this world and we always try to reel in benefits of our actions, we fail to see that sometimes there are far more important things in life than recognition and praise. Giving should be done for the sake of giving, we should never do it to gain some benefit in return. Like Einstein said, we are only true men once we learn to let go of the desire to receive something when we give to others.

From the Pope.

“ Evangelization is an immense mission, especially in this our time, in which humanity suffers from a certain lack of reflective thought (Caritas in Veritate, 19.31) and in which a humanism is spreading that excludes God (Ibid, 78).‖

‘To the end of the earth’ ―Because of this, it is still more urgent and necessary to illuminate the new problems that arise with the light of the Gospel, which does not change. We are convinced, in fact, that the Lord Jesus Christ, faithful witness of the love of the Father, ‗with His death and resurrection, is the main pro-pelling force for the true development of every human person and of the whole of humanity‘ (Ibid. 1). At the beginning of my ministry as Successor of the Apostle Peter, I affirmed forcefully: ‗We exist to show God to men. And only there where God is seen, does life really begin. Only when we find in Christ the living God, do we know what life is. ... There is nothing more beautiful than being overtaken, surprised by the Gospel, by Christ. There is nothing more beautiful than knowing Him and communicating to others friendship with Him.‘ (Homily at the beginning of the Petrine ministry, April 24, 2005). ―The preaching of the Gospel is an inestimable service that the Church can offer to the whole of humanity that travels through history. Coming from the dioceses of the whole world, you are an eloquent and living sign of the catholicity of the Church, which is concretized in the universal breath of the apostolic mission, ‗to the end of the earth‘ (Acts 1:8), ‗to the close of the age‘ (Matthew 28:20), so that no people or environment is deprived of the light and the grace of Christ. This is the meaning, the historic trajectory, the mission and the hope of the Church.‖

1 Cor. 9:19-27. Run for the crown that will last for ever.

It is written in the law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain." Is God concerned about oxen,

or is he not really speaking for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope, and the thresher in hope

of receiving a share.

If we have sown spiritual seed for you, is it a great thing that we reap a material harvest from you?

If others share this rightful claim on you, do not we still more? Yet we have not used this right. On the contrary, we endure everything so

as not to place an obstacle to the gospel of Christ.

Do you not know that those who perform the temple services eat (what) belongs to the temple, and those who minister at the altar share

in the sacrificial offerings?

In the same way, the Lord ordered that those who preach the gospel should live by the gospel.

I have not used any of these rights, however, nor do I write this that it be done so in my case. I would rather die. Certainly no one is going

to nullify my boast.

If I preach the gospel, this is no reason for me to boast, for an obligation has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it!

If I do so willingly, I have a recompense, but if unwillingly, then I have been entrusted with a stewardship.

What then is my recompense? That, when I preach, I offer the gospel free of charge so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.

Although I am free in regard to all, I have made myself a slave to all so as to win over as many as possible.

To the Jews I became like a Jew to win over Jews; to those under the law I became like one under the law - though I myself am not under

the law - to win over those under the law.

To those outside the law I became like one outside the law - though I am not outside God's law but within the law of Christ - to win over

those outside the law.

To the weak I became weak, to win over the weak. I have become all things to all, to save at least some.

All this I do for the sake of the gospel, so that I too may have a share in it.

Do you not know that the runners in the stadium all run in the race, but only one wins the prize? Run so as to win.

Every athlete exercises discipline in every way. They do it to win a perishable crown, but we an imperishable one.

Thus I do not run aimlessly; I do not fight as if I were shadowboxing.

No, I drive my body and train it, for fear that, after having preached to others, I myself should be disqualified
