Head Girl Team 2018-19

‘A good education is a foundation for a better future.’ Elizabeth Warren

Now that our time at St Mary’s has come to an end, I would like to reflect on the fond memories and

opportunities we have been given over the past seven years. St Mary’s has helped me to progress academically

in my studies, grow in confidence and meet friends that I know I will keep for a lifetime. Every day, I walked

through the school gates with a feeling that I am cared for, teachers believe in me and I am with people where

there is a huge sense of community. All students look out for one another and there is always someone to

speak to about any worries you may have. This reinforces the school motto ‘Every Child Matters’, which is

something the school takes very seriously in the daily running of the school.

In addition to offering excellent teaching, St. Mary’s also provides students with opportunities to take part in

memorable school trips, such as ski trips to Austria or educational trips to Paris and London. In Year 12 I went

on a trip to London. During our visit we went to the National History and Science Museum, a West End Show,

the Harry Potter Studio Tour and shopping on Oxford Street. The trip enabled us to bond with teachers and

students in a social setting. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip and I know that I will cherish the memories forever.

For me, St Mary’s has shaped me as a person, I worked with amazing teachers whom I regard as role models

and have influenced me in a positive way. Extra-curricular activities are something the school offers to help

students develop new skills, build confidence and enhance your network of friends. The range of

extra-curricular activities offered include choir, cross country, netball and Gaelic. The choir has had

opportunities to perform at many school events, perform on the BBC Choir of the Year on Radio Ulster and

recently at the world renowned Clonard Novena held in June. The school’s Gaelic team is also very successful;

we all remember January when the Under 16 Gaelic team made it through to the Ulster Schools’ Final.

I feel extremely privileged to have been appointed Head Girl in my last year of school. It was important for me

to be able to represent the school and be a good role model for other students to look up to. The role enabled

me to speak at public events such as Prize Day, Open Day and work with primary school children at our P6

experience day. From a personal perspective the position of Head Girl has enabled me to flourish and develop

confidence which will help me when I leave St Mary’s. My ability to speak confidently in front of people proved

very beneficial when I attended my interview at Queen’s University.

In September, I look forward to starting a new chapter of my life when I begin my studies at Queen’s University

to study Social Work. Although I am sad to leave school, I am excited to move on to the next stage of my

academic career. I feel very grateful as St Mary’s has helped me to get to where I am today as I could not have

done it without the help and support of all the staff.

As a Head Girl Team, we would like to wish Roise Byrne the best of luck with her new role as Head Girl. Enjoy

every minute of it and remember how hard you worked to achieve this title, and most importantly embrace

every moment during your last year of high school because it goes by much too quickly!

Eva Lundy, Head Girl 2018 - 2019

Foreword

Guest Speaker: Mrs Gemma Morgan

Sales/General Manager in SureSkills, Belfast

It is an honour and a privilege to have Gemma Morgan as guest speaker at our annual Prize Giving Ceremony, September 2019. Gemma is a former pupil of St Nicholas’ Primary School before she transferred to St Mary’s High School in 1983. Gemma completed her GCSEs in 1988. Back in the 1980s St Mary’s did not offer A Level studies and there was no Post 16 collaboration with De La Salle High School or St Patrick’s Grammar School. Consequently, Gemma had to make the decision to do her A Levels elsewhere. In 1990 she embarked on her studies at the University of Ulster to study a BTEC HND in Computer Studies. Her love of IT took her into this employment sector. During her time at university she undertook a one-year placement with the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service. This provided her with an opportunity to develop data bases and to set up software systems around the stations. The area that she enjoyed most was training ambulance employees in the use of computers. In the early 1990s the front line emergency service employees were just beginning to use computers in their work. This experience confirmed for Gemma that training staff was her strength as she did not want to work as a software developer on her own. Gemma’s career in the IT industry has been varied. In 1993 she joined Business Industrial Computing (BIC Systems) as an IT trainer. She progressed through the company in various roles such as: Senior Trainer, Lead Project Trainer and Consultant. In 1998 she undertook the role of Corporate Account Manager within the training department which involved sales. At present Gemma works for SureSkills, a company that was established in 1993 with its headquarters in Dublin. SureSkills has stated that they are ‘a world leader in delivering sophisticated technology, knowledge and learning solutions to complex and challenging client requirements.’ Since joining this company Gemma has undertaken the following roles: May 2001 Corporate Account Manager involved in sales and training 2004 Business Development Manager May 2014 – present Sales/General Manager

We would like to thank Gemma for making the time to be with us today to share in our students’ achievements. Gemma is very proud that her daughter Maeve will be following in her footsteps by attending St Mary’s High School now in September 2019. She is very excited by the opportunities and positive learning experiences that staff will have to offer Maeve and her friends at this new stage of their educational journey. Gemma would like to wish all the pupils at St Mary’s the very best of luck in their studies and future careers.
