St Mary’s Catholic Church Greenville, South Carolina @ @ @ @ @ 5 May 2019 Dear Friends in Christ, We have a mission to fulfill. In fact, we have a Great Commission. Last Sunday at Mass we heard the Lord Jesus say to his disciples on the evening of the Day of Resurrection: “As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” And St Matthew tells us that at his Ascension to the Father, the Lord Jesus left these instructions as his last words to the Church: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you with you always, to the close of the age.” So, there is our mission, and we need to get cracking. Last Sunday in my homily I encouraged everyone to think of someone they know who does not believe that Jesus Christ is Lord or who has fallen away from Christ for some reason, and then become a witness to Christ for that person. By our own Baptism, we are each made a missionary disciple, and we do our part in fulfilling the Great Commission when we lead others to know, love, and serve the Lord Jesus and live in full communion with his Church. There are many ways to open a continuing conversation with someone about the deepest things in life, including friendship with the Lord Jesus, but at the very beginning it can be difficult in the extreme to make the words come out of your mouth. That is the moment when our own faith, hope, and love are put to the test, and we must hope that love will overcome fear so that we can speak with candid simplicity about our faith in Christ. But once the first step has been taken, what comes next? There are many books to recommend (on prayer, theology, church history, the lives of the saints, and apologetics - the reasoned defense of the faith and refutation of arguments against it), but perhaps the most important means for introducing someone to Christ is asking them to join you at Mass. The privileged place for the proclamation of the Gospel is within the sacred liturgy, and the spiritual exploration which comes in reading books, conversing with friends, or serving those in need is but a preparation for being part of the Church’s divine worship. Having said that, meeting Christ in divine worship depends in large measure on first knowing him from the Sacred Scriptures, and so teaching someone to read and understand the Bible is also an essential part of introducing them to friendship with the Lord Jesus. All the priests and deacons at St Mary’s are at your service in these tasks, as are our lay colleagues on the church staff and in the school, so if you need help in striving to fulfill the Great Commission, let us know. Just after Labor Day we will begin our “Introduction to Catholicism” course in which all of these strands are drawn together, so begin now to encourage someone you know to join us in September and come to know, love, and serve the Lord Jesus Christ. Dear Friends in Christ,

We have a mission to fulfill. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you with you always, to the close of the age.”

So, there is our mission, and we need to get cracking. Honor our Mothers During MayThe month of May has traditionally been a time to honor our Blessed Mother as the Queen of Heaven and our birth Mothers for all they have done to give us life. Every weekend during the month of May, the St Mary’s Respect Life team, in cooperation with Birthright, will be collecting new baby items for Mothers who have made the choice to keep their babies.

They are in most need of maternity clothes, receiving blankets, baby wash & shampoo, diaper rash ointment, hooded towels, baby wash cloths, size 3-4 diapers and sleepers sizes 0-3.

Collection boxes will be located on the first floor of Sacred Heart Hall during the entire month of May. This is one small way to say: “Thank you MOM for giving me life.” Any inquiries for the St Mary’s Respect Life team may be directed to Mary Jo Falkosky at: [email protected].

Congratulations toOliver Payne Harris who was baptized last week.

Thank you to the many parishioners who were able to join us for our Pot Luck Dinner Event to benefit the St Clare’s Home for women. Over $9K was raised to assist with the needs of the home through your generosity. The home will provide housing for those expectant mothers who choose life and are in need of shelter, safety, and security while they are pregnant, as well as for some time after giving birth. It will not only provide much needed support, but will also serve as a life changing opportunity for these young mothers to shape their future and that of their newborn child. By fulfilling their physical, emotional, educational, and spiritual needs, they will acquire the skills and confidence needed to adequately care for their children and manage households of their own. This home in Greer will be the flagship for additional homes throughout the state and will be opening this spring. We thank you for your participation. Monetary donations are being accepted. Make checks payable to: Diocese of Charleston, fbo St Clare’s Home. Mail to: St Clare’s Home, 901 Orange Grove Rd., Charleston, SC 29407.
