Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 16, 2020 What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him, this God has revealed to us through the Spirit. — 1 Corinthians 2:9-10

— 1 Corintios 2:9-10

CHOICE “If you choose you can keep the commandments,” Sirach tells us. God “has set before you fire and water; to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand” (Sirach 15:15, 16). This is a great mystery: God does not control us so completely that we cannot choose our own path. We have certain boundaries, of course, but no one but we can choose our way within those boundaries. In today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus re-minds us of our freedom and our responsibility for our lives. He calls us to look beyond the words of the com-mandments, all the way to their meaning. Look beyond the adultery to the selfishness that poisons our love. Look be-yond the murder to the anger that eats away at our compas-sion. Look beyond the perjured testimony to the lies and deception that drive our behavior. Our vocation is to choose life for ourselves, and to choose a path through our part of the world that helps make life possible and more abundant for others as well. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CONGRESS “Live Mercy—Be Holy”

The Religious Education Congress, sponsored by the Archdiocese of Los Angles Office of Religious Education, is the nation’s largest gathering of Roman Catholics with 40,000 people in attendance. Over the three day period there are over 300 workshops presented with topics ranging from personal growth to music to spiritual development. This year’s theme, “Live Mercy—Be Holy,” challenges us to continue believing in mercy and holiness in the midst of our current struggles. The mercy of God is expressed through our acts of love, and when these acts are born out of

compassion, we embody the call to be holy. (from RE Congress website: www.recongress.org) At St. Mary School we truly believe in the continued growth of staff as this directly impacts their teaching and relationships with students. This professional and personal development is in the areas of pedagogy and faith formation. Participation in the Religious Education Congress is just one way that we help teachers grow as catechists. All the teachers at St. Mary School are either working toward or have already become catechists through continued education in our Catholic faith, mentoring and observation. This is one way that we can continue building the Catholicity of our school community.

Open Enrollment—Calling All Students in Grades TK-8

Did You Know? Make a playground checklist Parents sometimes think of playgrounds as “drop zones” for their kids — keep an eye or an ear out, but otherwise settle in on a bench while your child burns off energy. Nearly 170,000 children were injured on play-grounds in 2019, and a few moments of careful attention could keep your child from joining those ranks. When you get to a play-ground, check out the surfaces underneath the equipment, especially equipment that al-lows children to jump or hang from it. The ground surface should be soft and shock ab-sorbent. Check equipment for visible dan-gers — loose or missing pieces, sharp an-gles, broken supports, etc. For more tips, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Playground Checklist” at http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.
