Freedom from Worry

Tony Compolo tells a story about a friend of his who had to take a bus trip across central India. He was in an old model bus which was packed with people, packages, furniture and even animals. Sitting across from Tony's friend was a tired man whose neatly wrapped package was sitting on the luggage rack over his head. The man kept dozing off, and each time he would wake up in a panic fearing that his package had been stolen. This went on for hours, but then eventually he fell asleep. When he awoke, his package was gone. Momentarily he panicked as he realized he had been robbed. Then, being relieved that the thing that had caused him constant worry was now gone, he settled back in his seat, totally relaxed. With a sense of joy, he fell into a prolonged, wonderful sleep. The man was now free of the one thing he was holding on to. I believe that is what Jesus is attempting to illustrate in today’s Gospel reading. By letting go of the things that worry us, the things that obsess us, or the things that consume us, we discover we are free.

¡Caminado con Jesús!

¡Vigésimo Octavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario!

A través de casi todo el Antiguo Testamento las riquezas materiales y el poder mundano se entendían como bendiciones de Dios.

Pero el autor del libro de la Sabiduría, que escribió durante el siglo antes del nacimiento de Cristo, antepone la sabiduría a todas esas otras cosas.

Después de siglos de altibajos, muchos cayeron en la cuenta de que las riquezas y el poder eran cosas transitorias. Sin embargo, la habilidad de entender bien y de juzgar justamente son cosas imperecederas.

El hombre del Evangelio se entristeció y se fue apesadumbrado, por-que tenía muchos bienes.

A este personaje del Evangelio se le refiere a menudo como el rico y esto talvez ponga cierta distancia entre él y nosotros, pues rico es al-guien que vive en una mansión, es dueño de un yate y tiene inversio-nes de millones de dólares.

No somos ricos, ¿verdad? En realidad es probable que si lo seamos.

Probablemente seamos más ricos en bienes materiales que lo que este hombre del Evangelio nunca hubiera podido imaginar.

Es probable que la mayoría de nosotros tengamos acceso instantáneo y continuo a información mundial y de la farándula, que era inimagina-ble hace veinte años, mucho menos dos mil años atrás.

La mayoría de nosotros tenemos mejores viviendas, despensas y refri-geradores más abastecidos, más ropa y mejores opciones de traspor-tación que este hombre rico del Evangelio.

Por lo tanto, la respuesta de Jesús presenta el mismo desafío para nosotros también: ¿Cómo ganar un tesoro para el cielo, mientras vivi-mos con todos los tesoros que posemos?

Hay dos palabas en el Evangelio de hoy que a menudo pasamos por alto, pero que nos deben ofrecer consuelo mientras tratamos de re-conciliar nuestros bienes materiales con las verdaderas riquezas. “Jesús lo MIRÓ con AMOR y le dijo……”

Tal vez le dio una tarea prácticamente imposible, pero también vio bondad en las palabras y el comportamiento de ese hombre rico.

Los quiero, reciban mi bendición y no se les olvide orar por mí.

The annual Marathon Walk takes place this Monday, October 15th. Everyone is welcome to join us. We will de-part from St. Mary’ School at 12:35 and walk to Chautauqua Park. There we will enjoy cookies and juice provided by the KC’s. Upon our return to St. Mary’s School, the win-ning family for the $100 in SCRIP will be drawn and the top five sellers will be made into a “Human Sundae on Mon-day.” If we reach our overall goal of $15,000, all students will be treated to ice-cream.

Dominique is a single mother of two young children. She works full time and takes online college courses in the evening. When her youngest daughter was born, she took an unpaid maternity leave for 6 weeks and relied on savings to get through. When her daughter got sick and couldn’t attend daycare, Dominique started to miss work days and she fell behind on bills. She received a shutoff notice for her electricity, which would have got-ten her evicted from her government housing. Dominique called Catholic Charities and met with a social worker to apply for the Mother and Child Assistance Fund. Catholic Charities was able to get her caught up on her electric bill. This allowed her to keep the lights on and stay in her housing. Her social worker got Dominique connected to community resources that helped provide diapers and baby needs. Catholic Chari-ties provided her with a Pack’n Play through a partner program so that she had a safe place for her baby to sleep. Dominique continues to work and has expressed gratitude to Catholic Charities and the donors that make the Mother and Child Fund possible. Thank you for your generous support.

World Mission Sunday, organized by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, is a day set aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church’s mis-sionary activity through prayer and sacrifice. A second col-lection will be held at the weekend Masses on October 20 and 21.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Free Clinic will be hosting a Flu Shot Clinic on Sunday, October 21, 2018 from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm in St. Mary’s School Gym for ages 6 and up. The cost is $15.00. No appointment is needed. The first to come will be first served.
