FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Friends in Christ, This week as summer quickly comes to a close our three seminarians begin a new academic

year in their different formation programs. Our parish is unique in the Diocese of Brooklyn in that we have students studying on all of the different levels of seminary formation. In September we will have three students at Cathedral Prep Seminary in Elmhurst. Jose Santana has moved from the Pope John Paul II House of Discernment to Cathedral Seminary Residence in Douglaston to continue his college studies. Carlos Velasquez moves this weekend to the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington to begin what is called First Theology. Gino Pattugalan continues his studies at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. Gino spent most of the summer living and working in the Philippines. It was his first visit to his parent’s native land. Gino will begin his second year next month and will be able to return to the United States in June when he will receive a summer pastoral assignment from Bishop DiMarzio. I think that the fact that we have three seminarians says so much about our parish and the emphasis we place upon praying for and supporting vocations. As our seminarians begin a new academic year please continue to keep them in your prayers. I have included their addresses at the end of this letter in case you would like to write to them during the year to encourage each one of them on their journey towards ordination. This weekend our parish will have the opportunity to thank all those who volunteer in many different ways throughout the year. There will be a barbecue for all Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Choir members, ushers, hospitality ministers, pantry volunteers, counters, catechists and RCIA/RICA team members on Sunday at 4:00 P.M. at St. Mary’s Rectory. We will begin the afternoon with Evening Prayer in the rectory garden. Last weekend the barbecue was postponed because of a chance of story weather. I hope that all of our volunteers will be with us as we thank them for all that they do for St. Mary Star of the Sea and St. Gertrude. This week my dad was moved to Ozanam Hall Home in Bayside to begin his rehabilitation. Ozanam Hall is run by the Carmelite Sisters of the Aged and Infirmed. It is a nationally known facility that specializes in caring for the body and the soul of the patient. I am grateful each day, once again, for all of the prayers and concern that all of you have shown toward my family at this time. He still has a long road ahead but each day he makes progress. I know that progress takes place because of your prayers! Thank you so much! Please make sure to save the date of Tuesday, September 8th as we will celebrate the Feast of St. Mary Star of the Sea with a special Mass on the beach on Beach 14th Street. The Mass will begin at 6:00 P.M. Our new Vicar, Msgr.

Paul Sanchez, will be the celebrant of the Mass. Please remember to bring a beach chair or blanket with you! Carlos Velazquez Inmaculate Conception Seminary 440 West Neck Road Huntington, NY 11743-1626

Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time August 30, 2009 4

Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time August 30, 2009 5
