ST. MARY & ST . BONIFACE CATHOLIC CHURCHES
Carving His Own Path Fr. Charles Celebrates 60th Ordination Anniversary
On Sunday, May 25, Father Charles Caserta celebrated a special Thanks-giving Mass on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of his Ordination.
Held at St. Boniface, he was joined by his brother, Father Angelo Caserta,
and Father Thomas Bolte. Relatives, friends, and regular 7am Mass atten-dees joined in the celebration.
Father Charles explained the “early bird” Mass time was because of his
Sunday morning trips to Cincinnati to visit with a young Air Force captain, who had been paralyzed in a training accident nearly four years ago. Fa-
ther Charles met Jacob when visiting another patient in the hospital.
Jacob’s father spotted Father Charles, asked him to visit with his son, and
the weekly visits began.
Father Charles said he had known since 4th grade that he wanted to be a
priest and subsequently followed in his elder brother’s footsteps. He was
ordained on May 29, 1954, at St. Monica Cathedral, Cincinnati, by Archbishop Karl J. Alter, with his studies taken at St. Gregory Seminary,
Cincinnati and St. Mary of West, Norwood. He celebrated his first Mass at
St. Boniface. His appointments included: St. Agnes, Bond Hill; St. Patrick, Cincinnati; Sacred Hearts, Dayton; St. Aloysius, Bridgetown; Holy Angels, Sidney; St. Antoninus, Cincinnati; St. Catherine, Cin-
cinnati, St. Helen, Dayton, Our Lady of the Rosary, Dayton; and Transfiguration, West Milton (1979-
1994). Father Charles also served as Youth Director, Sidney Deanery; counselor, LaSalle High School;
and Chaplin of the Dayton Serra Club. He retired from active ministry on June 15, 1994.
Father Charles was born and raised in the Piqua community, but has not lived here for many years. He
returned to Piqua just last year to help at St. Mary and St. Boniface churches. Following Mass, a break-fast reception was held in the Caserta Activities Center.

St. Mary Altar Society
Members of St. Mary Altar Society manned a very successful Cake Booth at the Church
Festival this year, thanks to the generous donations from the ladies of the parish. What great bakers we have! Also a special Mass was offered in May for our living and deceased mem-
bers. No meetings are scheduled over the summer months, but these will reconvene in the
Fall.
St. Boniface/St. Mary Adult Faith Formation Commission (AFF)
Past Activities:
St. Joseph Table: In honor of the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker, May 1, parishioners donated nonperish-
able food items for the Bethany Center food pantry at all Masses on April 26-27.
Pentecost: Red balloons representing tongues of fire and the birth of the Church were used as decorations
at all the Masses, June 8 -9. Parishioners wore nametags with their Confirmation names.
Future Activities:
Missionary presentation: In conjunction with the Mission Committee, the AFF will host a potluck dinner
after the 5:00 PM July 26th Mass for two visiting Vietnamese Sisters in the cafeteria of the NSC.
Coffee and Doughnuts: Will resume in September after the 9:00 and 10:30 AM Masses hosted
by the Men’s and Women’s Christ Renews His Parish Groups. From September through May,
this event is hosted by various parish organizations, coordinated by the AFF, and funded by our
parishes’ Family Life groups.
Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP): Both men and women from our parishes are now in
formation planning the upcoming Women’s Retreat, October 18-19, and Men’s Retreat,
November 15-16. This is an opportunity for parishioners, 18 and older, to deepen their personal relationship with Christ and renew the life of our Catholic parishes. Women par-
ticipants are Karen Barringer, Kathy Bogart, Angie Cecil, Letty Couchot, Bonne Deck-
nadel, Mindy Dotson, Barb Kohl, Bev Mikolajewski, Sue Monroe, Cathy Oda, Vickie Pierson, and Julie Tyler. Men participants are Daren Cecil, Wayne Couchot, Trent Karn, John Karpinski,
Jim Koenig, Jim Linthicum, Sam Miller, Joe McKinley, Rick Monroe, Ron Sayler, Bill Semanie, Don
Stonerock, and Chuck Tyler. The Adult Faith Formation Commission asks for prayers for the continued
success of CRHP in our parishes.

The Center for Early Learning enjoyed a wonderful first year, filled with growth, joy
and numerous learning experiences. Children and families were pleased with our pro-
gram, and most are returning for prekindergarten next year. Many of our students are
planning to enroll in Piqua Catholic, and we continue to receive enrollment inquiries
for next school year.
We ended the year with an all-school picnic on
June 4th, which was held in the cafeteria due to the
thunderstorms. More than 60 children and their families attended and enjoyed lunch together. On
June 5, we held our first graduation ceremony in
the Father Caserta Activity Center. It was a very
special evening, complete with diplomas, two slideshows, and a special children’s performance.
Special thanks to Mark Pitsenbarger and seminari-
ans for their help.
Over the summer, we will be completing our big summer project - a new playground! The play-
ground will be ADA accessible and feature one
large play structure for up to 25 children and two
additional small structures. Our fundraising cam-paign with the envelopes has gone very well, but
we are still accepting donations. Please contact the
preschool if you are interested in making a tax-
deductible contribution.
Enrollment is still open for our preschool program for those seeking a high-quality and faith-based educa-tional experience for the children ages 3-5. If you, or someone you know, are interested in learning more
about our program or visiting our preschool, please contact us at (937) 773-3876.
Thank you to all of our wonderful families, volunteers, staff, and supporters for an amazing first year.
Have a wonderful summer and God Bless! ~ Ms. Jenni

Fifth Annual
Michelle Peltier-Theado
Scholarship Award
The Fifth Annual Michelle Peltier Theado Perfect Attendance Award
was given out at the end of the 2013-2014
school year to three Piqua Catholic students who achieved perfect school attendance for
the year. Those three students are: Molly
Safreed, Hope Anthony, and Collin Hutton. Molly received this award for the third time
and Hope received it for the second time.
These three students will divide $500,
which will be subtracted from their tuition bills next year at Lehman High School and
Piqua Catholic. Congratulations!
The Michelle Peltier Theado Scholarship
Fund was established by Nancy and Chuck Peltier, Michelle’s parents. Michelle was a
graduate of both Piqua Catholic and
Lehman and was teaching first grade in
Gahanna, OH, when she succumbed to oral cancer in 2009 at the age of 26. During her
school tenure, Michelle had perfect
attendance for 12 of 13 years. Perfect attendance is often overlooked as being
necessary for success in school. This award
encourages attendance and rewards for it too! Donations to this fund are always
welcome and can be given to either Chuck
or Nancy Peltier.

Most people love a story with a happy ending. If you are like most people
you will love the following story. It has a happy beginning and ending.
In 2012, our then, new pastor Fr. Tom Bolte, supported the idea of establish-
ing a preschool and prekindergarten for Piqua Catholic School. The goal for
such an undertaking was to transition preschoolers and pre-kindergarteners
into kindergarten at Piqua Catholic School. The vacated Downing St. campus
would house the preschool and it would be known as the Center for Early
Learning at Piqua Catholic.
The task of setting up the preschool was taken on by the Strategic Action Committee which is a subcommittee
of the Piqua Catholic School Board. The members of the Strategic Action Committee are Kelly Earhart, Stacy
Scott, Ruth Koon, Marsha Koon and Jill McFarland. This committee spearheaded the process and spent many
hours coordinating the proposed school with the Archdiocese of Cincinnati Education office and the Ohio De-
partment of Education office. A professional resource team was set up for advisory purposes consisting of Sue
Koverman, Manager of Resource Development with the Archdiocese, Judy Shoup, Director of St. Christo-
pher’s Preschool in Vandalia, Cheryl Buecker, Director of Early Childhood Development at Edison College,
Nancy Dean, Director of Decolores Montessori School in Greenville and Bev Mikolajewski with the Rehabili-
tation Center for Neurological Development in Piqua.
Preparing the classrooms for the children ages 3 to 5 was the next task at hand. Thanks to the generosity of St.
Boniface and St. Mary Parishes, the Miami County Foundation, the Piqua Community Foundation and the
Cookbook Committee from St. Mary Parish, the group was able to purchase new furniture, new flooring, new
lighting, installed new windows and new restrooms and painted each classroom.
The next important step was to hire a director. Stacy and Kelly put together a selection committee and inter-
viewed many applicants, one of which was Jenni Smith. Jenni demonstrated the traits required for this impor-
tant position for the Center for Early Learning.
The Center for Early Learning at Piqua Catholic School
opened its doors on August 20, 2013. The Piqua Chamber of
Commerce ambassadors, the parents and students enrolled at
the Center for Early Learning and many friends and relatives
celebrated this occasion with a ribbon cutting at the Downing
St. campus.
The director, Jenni Smith, has become an energetic and com-
mitted leader for the school. She wears many hats which in-
clude director, teacher, development director, marketing direc-
tor and fundraising chairman. One of the many projects Jenni
initiated was the 1st annual Dazzle Dash Fun Run held in No-
vember, 2013. Jenni has also initiated a fundraiser for new
playground equipment on the campus and is currently accept-
ing donations for this project. Because of her strong and inno-
vative leadership, the first year was so successful with the en-
rollment it required hiring two other teachers and enlisting
many volunteers.
Most importantly, fulfilling our goal of encouraging the students in prekindergarten at the Center for Early
Learning to enter kindergarten at Piqua Catholic School proved to be a tremendous success. Eight of the kin-dergarteners enrolled at Piqua Catholic for the new school year came from the Center for Early Learning.
Everyone is a winner in this story with such a happy ending. The enrollment at Piqua Catholic School has cer-
tainly benefitted from this addition. Equally important is the fact that the vacated Downing St. campus building
is now a happy, welcoming and thriving Center for Early Learning.

Theology of the Body: Middle School Edition is a Success! Our first ever sum-
mer session for Theology of the Body (TOB) is in full swing and is going great! We
have 13 middle school students currently enrolled in this eight week program and we’re all having a blast. Our TOB team includes John Popp, Marlene Henry, Brenda Karpin-
ski, and David Peyton. Together, we lead these young teens through Pope St. John Paul
II’s important work, “Man and Woman He Created Them: A Theology of the Body.” St. John Paul gave a series of 159 talks in the first few years of his pontificate and these
were bound together into one work known as Theology of the Body. Through these sessions, we learn
about how much God loves us, even to the point of creating us in His Image and Likeness. We find out
how beautiful the human person is and how we are to see that beauty revealed in those around us. Theol-ogy of the Body will be a yearly summer program for all students entering the eighth grade. If you aren’t
registered to attend this summer session and would like to attend, please contact the parish office.
Fall CCD Registration: Registration for this year’s CCD classes will be-
gin on August 1, 2014. Registration will be available via our website. Forms
will be available in the churches and parish offices for those not able to regis-ter online. Please register your child(ren) early for class so that we can have
everything ready for their return! Remember, all parish children who are not
enrolled in Catholic School should attend CCD classes. Additionally, chil-
dren wishing to receive the Sacraments of First Communion and Confirma-tion must be enrolled for the year preceding reception of the Sacrament to be
eligible.
Religious Education Classes – Catechists (Teachers) Needed: We are in need of a number of new
catechists for this Fall’s CCD classes. We provide the teacher’s book with everything laid out to make teaching the students fun and easy. You just add your own faith and personality to the tools you receive,
and voilà, you’re ready to go! Catechists are needed for the following grades: First, Second, Third, and
Sixth. Call the parish offices with questions, or to volunteer.
Vacation Bible School: SonTreasure Island! Join us July 14-18 for an
island adventure, right here in the middle of Piqua (also known as the Caserta
Center!) We’ll have Bible stories, games, treats, lots of island music, and much,
much more! See the registration form on our website for details. We need many volunteers to make this happen, so parents, please offer your time and have an
adventure with your kids!
