THE FINANCE COMMITTEE would like to update you about the renovations and restorations that have been occurring, and will be commencing at St. Mary’s Church. We know these last few months have been trying for many of you, and it was with great joy and excitement that we could return to Mass as a Parish in late May. We hope that you have had an opportunity to walk around the Church and see some of the work that has been completed. Boak & Sons have been busy replacing the sanctuary roof. The steep-slope portion was completed last year while the flat-roof portion was recently completed last month. Fortunately, the parish was blessed with an insurance settlement that covered most of the cost of the steep-slope portion. We have used $114,000 from the Restoration & Renovation account to pay for the flat roof replacement. Your past support and contributions to the monthly Restoration & Renovation fund have greatly assisted in the roof replacement and other church and rectory projects, including the re-leading of the two large stained-glass windows in the sanctuary which were repaired during Fr. Schmalzried’s tenure. Our next restoration goal is to complete the re-leading process for the remaining exterior stained-glass windows for an anticipated cost of $187,000. Please prayerfully consider contributing to the Restoration & Renovation fund. Platinum Sponsor - $1,500 or more Gold Sponsor - $1,000 to $1,499 Silver Sponsor - $500 to $999 Bronze Sponsor - $100 to $499 All sponsors from the Bronze level and up will be recognized with your name on a plaque displayed in the church. LIVE THE LITURGY It is not easy to confront someone who has wronged or hurt us. But it is absolutely necessary to do so in order for reconciliation to occur. We are taught to mind our own business and keep our thoughts to ourselves. When we have been hurt or wronged and we do not acknowledge and give voice to it, those feelings of hurt remain in our hearts and can eventually turn into anger. Verbalizing our feelings can diffuse them, and communicating how we actually feel brings honesty to our relationships. This is the only way that the path of love can remain open and that integrity and mutual respect can be maintained. It is no wonder that Jesus absolutely insisted upon healthy and compassionate confrontation. People don’t always realize that they are doing harm. Bringing this to light is not only good for the one who is hurt, but also for the one that caused the pain. The new insight and revelation may prevent the action from being repeated again.

Please remember the families of

Barbara Monsanto and James Zampella

whose funerals were celebrated this past week.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

HAVE THE HEART OF A CHRISTIAN STEWARD! Although we may be very familiar with today’s Responsorial Psalm 95, our hearts may still be hardened from time to time. How do we resist hardened hearts when sharing our gifts with others? Humans may forget the gifts given to them, but the Lord always remembers. Remember when you share your time, talent, and treasure, that you are sharing these gifts with the Lord!

LIVE THE LITURGY A good self-reflective posture will quickly show us that when the shoe is on the other foot and we are the ones in need of forgiveness, we desire it above anything else. This is especially true with our relationship with God. It is hypocritical to want one thing for ourselves and something else for another. Yet, many act in precisely this way. Forgiveness is an act of freedom that restores honest dialogue, shares true, and heartfelt feelings and acknowledges the consequences of an action. It admits that the wrong has caused a hurt that must be healed and squarely positions responsibility on the offender. The act of forgiveness recognizes our sinfulness and brokenness. It also admits that the most saintly among us is capable of doing very grave and deep harm to another person. It sees that we all can be victims of our passions and works in progress that deserve unlimited chances to get it right. With forgiveness, you release yourself from the bonds of negativity and pursue a path of restoration, wholeness, and healing. You do not forget the wrong nor do you dismiss it. Sometimes, we have to stay far away from the one who hurt us. But we can still heal internally and be free.

LIVE THE LITURGY If I work for five hours, I expect to get paid for five hours. If I work for two, I expect to get paid for two. What if we worked for a company that paid everyone the same amount regardless of how long they worked? How would we feel going home with the same pay for working eight hours as my co-worker did for working only two hours? Secular wisdom would have a huge problem with this and a visit to the Labor Board would quickly pursue. But this is God’s wisdom and God’s ways. We sometimes think that if we pray more, better, or more fervently and go over and above with the practice of our faith, God will somehow reward us and present us with some kind of merit badge. We are so wrong. Spiritual practices have only one true purpose: to deepen our love for God. In deepening our love for God, we also increase our ability to see God’s presence around us, living life more purposefully and contemplatively. What if God chooses to treat someone who has come on the scene of faith later in life the same as someone who has devoted their whole lives to it? Does it really matter? If we have the merit badge notion of faith, we can find ourselves feeling a little arrogant and even jealous of folks who have not followed the same path that we have. We can even see ourselves as the privileged few who have a corner on the faith and fully possess it. That thinking doesn’t square with God. God is all about mercy in abundance and is ready to take anyone to himself regardless of when they come. He is only happy that they have come home and delights in their return. After all, if you really and truly love someone, does it matter what they will give you in return or what you receive as a benefit? If relationships were assessed based upon productivity, they would lack authentic love. When we breathe our last, all that is of consequence is union with God. If my love for God is real, I am going to want to live the Gospel, abide by the commandments, practice my faith, forgive and love my neighbor, and care for the environment, regardless of how much time it takes or benefits me. We want God to think and behave as we do, and in doing so, we set ourselves up for disappointment. God has a totally different agenda and that’s okay.

ON THIS CATECHETICAL SUNDAY, we not only highlight the work of catechists in parishes and schools, but we also commend parents and guardians and encourage them to take seriously their role of making their Catholic households a place where faith is passed on to the next generation. Parents are truly the primary catechists of their children. They prepare the soil and plant the first seeds of faith.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS “Are you envious because I am generous?” is the question the landowner asks a laborer in today’s Gospel. Can a Christian steward be envious? As humans, it is natural for us to compare ourselves with others, but today, Jesus’ message is that we should be grateful for what we’ve been given. Perhaps like the laborer, we can be a little more grateful for the gifts God has given to us instead of comparing ourselves with others.

GOSPEL MEDITATIONS Where are you on the

road of integrity? Honesty is all that is required.

God is good with that. It is okay to struggle with our

decisions and wrestle with ourselves. Consciences

on the path to maturity and greater depth are not

always going to know what action is immediately

best. We may, at first, say no to what we know is

right and, after prayerful reflection and thought,

come around to doing it. Conversion happens when

our no changes to yes, regardless of how sinful or

out of sync we may be at the time. God is anxious to

welcome us to Himself. But we cannot embrace

Him unless we want to. Learning to orient our gift

of free will to what is of divine origin, right, and

best is a discipline we must always tweak and

perfect.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS Today’s readings focus on vineyards. We know it takes time and dedication to produce a crop of grapes from a vineyard, but how often do we focus on the vineyards of our hearts? If we cultivate authentic Christian stewardship within our hearts, we give joyfully of our time, talent, and treasure to the Lord. If we do not connect our stewardship to doing the Lord’s work, it’s easy to let our heart’s vineyard produce a bad crop.

We will have more details coming soon regarding a live stream of the event for the sake of total transparency. Please watch for more information in future bulletins and listen to the announcements before mass begins for more updates!

***THIS WEEKEND*** In order for our Seminarian, Bob England, to continue his studies he will need to practice preaching to the parish. Once a month he will be giving a Reflection after Communion in place of Father Francis giving a Homily. The dates for the month of October are the 10th and 11th.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS Today’s readings allow us to focus on how the Lord provides for us. We hear of “rich food and choice wine,” living “in the house of the Lord,” and that “God will fully supply whatever you need.” We know it’s highly unlikely that Jesus will co-sign on your mortgage or go to the grocery store to pay for your food. The question then, is how can we provide for others in Jesus’ name? Remember that we are all called, not only to receive Eucharist, but to become Eucharist for others by the sharing of our gifts.

Happy Anniversary!

ANGEL TREE We have been contacted by Catholic Charities and there will be no Angel Trees this year due to COVID-19. However, they are modifying the program and will be assisting families with Gift Cards during the holiday season. If you would like to participate by donating a Gift Card, you may begin doing so by dropping them off at the Rectory Office. Gift Cards can be from stores like Toys ‘R Us, Walmart, Target, Giant Eagle, JC Penneys, TJ Maxx, Burlingtons, Marc’s, Aldis, etc. While it is very early, if the churches would need to close due to a rise in numbers in our county, we would already have Gift Cards to donate to Catholic Charities, ensuring that the families would have Christmas, even if churches were closed. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL baskets will be on the radiator covers by the open doors of the church this Sunday, October 4th, for the St. Vincent De Paul Collection. Thank you for your continued generosity.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS Jesus’ response to the Pharisees today concluded with repaying “to God what belongs to God.” How have you received gifts from God in the last week or month or year or in your lifetime? It’s often easier to look at what has been taken away from us, but we are called to focus on what we’ve been given. After we acknowledge all that has been generously given to us, then we can have the mindset of joyfully sharing our own gifts with others.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS Today’s Old Testament reading teaches us how to lend money. How often do we hesitate to share our material resources with others? Do we have reservations about how they will use them? Do we focus only on what they’ve already been given instead of on their persistent needs? It’s easy to focus on what others have been given and what has been taken away from ourselves, but we’re called to reverse this thinking. How do we count our own blessings then share our gifts generously with others?

ANGEL TREE We have been contacted by Catholic Charities and we will not be purchasing gifts this year due to COVID-19. However, they are modifying the program and will be assisting families with Gift Cards during the holiday season. If you would like to participate by donating a Gift Card, there will be Angels available beginning this weekend with suggestions for Gift Cards. While it is very early, if the churches would need to close due to a rise in numbers in our county, we would already have Gift Cards to donate to Catholic Charities, ensuring that the families would have Christmas, even if churches were closed. If you have already donated a Gift Card please do not feel as if you need to take an angel off the tree. Thank you for your continued generosity.

RETIRED RELIGIOUS Sister Bernadine will be with us on November 14th and 15th to give a Reflection after Communion. Thank you for your continued caring, kindness, and generosity.

THE ST. MARY’S ST. VINCENT DE PAUL FOOD PANTRY will begin collecting the following items for their Thanksgiving Food Giveaway: corn, green beans, large cans of yams, pumpkin mix, evaporated milk, turkey gravy, stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, boxed pie crust mix, and Thanksgiving napkins. Hours of operation are between 11:30AM and 1:00PM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

FATHER FRANCIS WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND HIS APPRECIATION AND THANKFULNESS for all of the birthday cards, gifts, phone calls, Mass, and best wishes extended to him for his birthday in October. He values your friendship and kindness.

OUR NEWLY FORMED WELCOMING COMMITTEE has welcome bags for new parishioners. Covid-19 delayed the process of putting together the items for the bags, but they are back on schedule. THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

2020 BISHOP’S APPEAL As of November 2020, our parish has achieved 40% towards our goal of 100%. Despite this year full of challenges, our parish goal of 100% participation is a goal we are working hard to attain. There are three ways in which you can participate: PRAY for the success of the Annual Bishop’s Appeal; DONATE to the Appeal; VOLUNTEER your time and talents to any of the ministries of the Church. Please remember to submit a completed response card or pew envelop as all responses count towards our parish participation goal. Thank you in advance for your reflection and generous response to the Annual Bishop’s Appeal.

PLEASE JOIN US for the Miraculous Medal Novena after the 12:05PM daily mass on Mondays and the Divine Mercy Adoration after the 12:05PM daily mass on Fridays. All are welcome!

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS Today’s Gospel passage speaks of a classic stewardship parable that begs the question: which servant are you most like? Think of all the gifts you have been given by God. If you had a conversation with Jesus like the servant had with the master, would he ask you to share in his joy because you took these gifts and used them to better the world? Good stewardship involves becoming aware of our gifts, then having the wisdom to share them with others.

~A Prayer For Our New Bishop~

Bishop-Elect Reverend David J. Bonnar

Almighty God, eternal shepherd and guide,

in your love for us, You have blessed the Diocese of

Youngstown with a shepherd to lead us to be

Christ’s heart of mercy, voice of hope, and hands of justice.

May Bishop-Elect Bonnar fill our minds and hearts

with the truth of the Gospel, the power of the sacraments

and the desire to build up your holy Church

so that “All May Be One.” We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen
