Easter Letter
Freedom is such a special word.
It means so much to so many people and in so many different ways.
We have just celebrated Easter..(so very late this year) and freedom was something Jesus’ people yearned for.
The press in Jerusalem may have recorded Jesus’ death like this;
“Yeshua bar Joseph, Jesus of Nazareth was born in the year 6 BC. He was born to Mary and Joseph, the carpenter from Galilee.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph. He is survived by his mother, Mary of Capernaum, also by his brothers, James, Joseph, Judas and Simon, also of Capernaum and several other sisters.
During his lifetime, he received some notoriety and publicity because of unusual occurrences associated with his life such as the blind seeing, the deaf hearing, and the lame walking. It was also rumoured that he radically changed people’s lives.
More recently, according to this short article in the Nazareth News, last Sunday in Jerusalem, large Passover crowds hailed him as king.
Shortly thereafter, the crowds turned against him.
This past Friday afternoon, he was sentenced to death by the Roman procurator, Pontius Pilate, representing the Roman Empire in Jerusalem. They have made it known publicly, that they did this reluctantly
Yeshua bar Joseph, Jesus of Nazareth was killed at three o’clock in the afternoon on Golgotha hill, the hill of the crucifixion, with two other criminals, outside the walls of Jerusalem. His burial was in the tomb of Joseph of Aramathea.
His family requests that no flowers be sent, but rather that memorials be sent to the children’s fund in care of the synagogue in Bethlehem, the place of his birth.”
Following this, many reports have been received that Jesus himself has actually been seen, alive and with his friends!”
2
That Jesus actually lived and died is not a matter for dispute.
That he was and is the Son of God, is. That is our choice. But he is alive and that is what gives us so much freedom today to live and love as his people.
We celebrate today, spring, new life, and hope….even with Brexit!
May God be always interwoven with us…and with those we love,
Beth
Voyage to the Solomon Islands
From Beth Sue and I are hoping to be able to go to the Solomon Islands in May this year. It depends on whether or not I can get enough cover. This time, I have been asked to develop spirituality with the Melanesian Sisters, the Sisters of the Church and Mothers Union. I usually work with the men so this will be wonderful for me. Sue and I will do this together, as well as looking at strong female leadership in an all-male culture! Given weight restrictions, I have to think carefully about what I can take with me and I thought of getting the sisters and MU to make Anglican Prayer beads. We have done this before here a few years ago. Beads are very light...so could you scour around and find some necklaces, brace-lets etc that I can untie and take with me a box of a thousand beads, wood, glass, medium size, Crosses, not more than 2” tall as well please.. anything? I will put out baskets at the back of all three churches or please leave them on my doorstep. 29 Ferry Rd! Beth and Sue
Confirmation
There will be a confirmation later this year. If you are considering
being confirmed please get in touch with Beth.

Forest church - the place where Nature & worship meet.
So often our worship and contemplation take place within four walls, away from sunlight and the beauty of the world but meeting outdoors often helps us to relate even better to Jesus and the stories He told.
Outdoors can be a place of inspiration and creativity, as we appreciate God’s creation all around us.
Forest Church is a time for us to worship together, to meet with fellow Christians, to sing together, to pray together and prepare ourselves for the days ahead.
For some it is a family affair with interactive prayers, for some it is a qui-et and reflective time. A time to be still and listen to God’s word.
For most it is both those things, and much more besides.
We talk about God’s creation, about His wonderful world and our part in it. We often reflect on bible passages that talk of nature and the out-doors, passages which show us how important the role of nature is in God’s plan for us.
Events at St David’s URC
May 11th – Forest Church to be held at Christ Church, Kings Road, Bebington,
CH63 8LX between 3pm and 4pm. This is an all age outdoor service, so please
wear sensible footwear and warm clothing. The theme is “New Life”. Refresh-
ments will be available at the close of the service.
May 15th – St. David’s Tots are taking part in Peppa Pigs Muddy Puddle Walk.
We will be leaving the church hall at noon and making our way across the fields
to Little Al’s Urban Farm. Peppa will be there to meet the tots on arrival. Mon-
ies raised will be given to Save the Children.
May 19th – Café Church. All age informal worship at 10.15am led by Revd.
Louise Franklin and the Café Church team. Bacon butties for breakfast. Yummy.

EASTHAM SAINTS—Gone but not forgotten
John Goodier
John was a lovely, quiet spoken gentleman. Margaret, his wife was
one of the first people that I met when we first joined the congre-
gation at St Mary’s. She was sewing Angel costumes for Angels
Three X, a dramatic production put on in Church, and she made me
very welcome when I went to help. She got me involved in the
Eastham and Bromborough Churches’ babysitting circle, a truly ecu-
menical group, without which Ray and I would never have gone out
when our children were so little. Through Margaret we got to know
John very well and he and Ray regularly collaborated on lighting
events and wiring the church.
John was very active at St Peters and played a large part in the care
of the spiritual and secular needs of the Parish down there. John
was always there with a helping hand at fund raising events. I re-
member him helping us to serve refreshments on the train trips to
London in the 80’s.
His forte was electrics and he regularly over-
saw the electrical needs of the Parish
Church, the Church Centre and St Peters.
John worked tirelessly, both practically and
spiritually, for Christ’s Kingdom in this par-
ish.
The next time that you visit the parish
church why not sit a while on the bench by
the vestry door which was placed there in
John’s memory.

St. Peter’s Sunday Lunches
The idea for these came about as there are quite a few people living alone at St Pe-ter’s and, talking, realised most did not make Sunday lunch. We thought it would be a good idea, every so often, to go for Sunday lunch after our service. To date, we have had three Sunday lunches going alternate months to the Argyle. We manage to push tables together so we can sit at one long table and there is much chat and laughter. Anyone is welcome to join us and you do not have to live alone to come!

Forest Church isn’t just normal church meeting outdoors, instead it tries to participate with Nature. When was the last time you stopped to touch a leaf, or feel the bark of a tree? The natural world, of which we are a part, is as alive as we are. Take time to appreciate God’s world. Nature is essential to our lives in so many ways and we are nature’s stewards, a role given to us by God.
Forest church aims to meet three or four times a year at various ven-ues—not necessarily a forest!

Recovering from Depression - a companion guide for Christians By Katharine Smith, SPCK, £9.99 Depression is a devastating illness, both for those affected and for their loved ones, and the road to recovery can appear very long and winding indeed. However, for those who are slowly feeling their way towards a life of greater equanimity, this encourag-ing book will prove a reassuring. A complete cure from depression might not always be possible, but there is much to be gained from trying to identify the issues that gave rise to negative pattern of think-ing and behaving in the first place. We might find, as we attempt to integrate these into our lives in a healthy way, that our faith and hope take on a new maturity.

The Joys of Email
A couple living in Minnesota, America, decided they would escape from the winter weather and go down to Florida for a holiday. They decided to stay at the hotel where they spent their honeymoon 40 years earlier.
Because of hectic schedules, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on a Thursday and his wife was to fly down the following day. The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an email to his wife.
However, accidentally he left out one letter in her email address and without realising his error, sent the email.
Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband’s funeral. He was a minister who had had a heart attack and died. The widow decided to check her emails, expecting messages of condolence and encouragement from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted. The widow’s son rushed into the room and saw the computer screen which read:-
“To: My loving wife
Subject: I’ve arrived
Date: 16th March 2019
I know you’re surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you’re allowed to send emails to loved ones. I’ve just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your own arrival to-morrow. Looking forward to seeing you then. Hope your journey is as une-ventful as mine was.
P.S. It sure is hot down here !”

Miraculous Events in Jerusalem
My name is Cleopas. My friend and I had followed Jesus and
were moved by his teachings. We were friends with his Disciples
and knew them well. Like them we went with Jesus into Jerusa-
lem for the Passover. You know what happened to him on what
you call Good Friday so you can imagine how we were feeling.
We were mourning the loss of a dear teacher and friend, never
mind the hopes for a new order and a better world but now those
hopes were dashed. I could just imagine my mother saying when I
got back home, “I told you no good would come out of following
that Jesus. It is about time you took your head out of the clouds
and started to get on with real life”.
On the day after the Sabbath we were with the disciples when
some of the women, including Mary Magdalene, came to the
room where we were so upset because Jesus had died. They came
into the room with joy on their faces and Mary told us she had
seen Jesus and he was alive. Well, you can understand why we
didn’t believe her. I mean to say who has ever heard of someone
killed, as Jesus was, coming back to life. It defied belief. Anyway
Peter and John went to the tomb and found it empty with the
grave clothes lying on the stone. What could it all mean?

Shortly after this, my friend and I set off for the village called
Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. We walked along
talking about all that had happened since Friday. Had someone
stolen his body? Was it possible that what the women said could
be true? What were we going to do now without Jesus to guide
us?
Suddenly a man joined us and asked us “What are you talking
about? We looked down at our feet and said, “Are you a visitor
to Jerusalem and have not heard about how the Chief Priest per-
suaded the Romans to Crucify Jesus of Nazareth three days ago?
We thought he was a great prophet and the one who would re-
deem Israel. Then this morning some of the women told us they
had seen him and he was alive. How can this be?”
The man walked with us all the way to Emmaus explaining to
us the teachings of the Prophets and comparing them to the
things that had happened to Jesus. When we got to Emmaus, the
man started to leave us but I said. “It is getting dark. Please come
and join us in the Inn for some food “. So he joined us and, as he
blessed the bread and broke it, we suddenly realised who he was
but, by that time, he had disappeared from our sight.
We rushed back to Jerusalem to tell the eleven disciples
what had happened. Of course the story doesn’t end there. You
can read about it in the gospels and in the Acts of the Apostles.
