From the desk of Edith Stein … “To organize as a state is required in the interests of the community only to the extent that community life is endangered by impulses that live within the individuals. Even from the standpoint of the community, the justification would be a merely factual one, which means it would consist only in the evidence that the individuals are in fact so conditioned and that the state in question at any given time is able to guarantee the correction of this condi-tion… The value of the legal system is measured not according to the idea of justice, but according to the development of the community life, which the system serves. Community as such has a value all its own; and the ethnic community as a culturally productive personality has inherent value above and beyond that. The state, which with its legal system is placed in the ser-vice of the community’s life, does not create that value but only helps to realize it” (“ Investigations Concerning the State”, 151-153). “For anyone who is vividly feeling the value of a politi-cal system, this problem of whether he should regard the politi-cal system as entitled to exist is just as unlikely to crop up as is the question of whether a person whom he loves is entitled to exist. Everything with value exhibits its right to exist, in that it makes its intrinsic value felt. But that doesn’t resolve all the issues. Since values can emerge in competition, and since one value may through its realization exclude the realization of oth-ers, you always have to examine, regardless of what values are in themselves, the extent to which they can be allowed to hold their own over against other values, or the extent to which it is right for them to impose themselves at the expense of other values” (153-154). “Refusing to satisfy a claim to which you committed yourself by a promise is always a violation of the law. However, that refusal can be offered in the interest of a higher value. When that case arises for the state is not something that can be determined by general laws of precedence, but the correct deci-sion concerning the relationship of concrete values standing in conflict at any given time will depend, as a rule, on a whole se-ries of such laws, whose possible combinations in practice are not to be anticipated” (154). We see the necessity of dealing in a logical manner with unique situations before the legal system in a way that respects justice and the rule of law, which are sometimes in tension. Decisions based on values must be made.

THANK YOU We would like to thank all the people of St. Mary parish for their kindness and support to us in our farewell party. We were amazed and gratified at the out-pouring of love that we received. We especially wanted to thank those of you who gave us a gift, and promised to pray for us. We are blessed for having received both. Please know that you will always be in our hearts and prayers as we begin the next stage of our life in North Carolina. Please feel free to drop us a note, or better yet stop in if you’re in the area: Deacon Steve and Sue Puscas 555 Nathan McDaniel Dr. Nebo, NC. 28761 Please know that you are in our hearts, and thoughts, and prayers. Worldwide Marriage Encounter Rockford/Madison/Milwaukee Ministry

“Heavenly Father...give us love for all people, especially the most

vulnerable, and help us bear witness to the truth that every life is worth living.”

USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities “Every Life is Worth Living” Prayer Card

In today’s Gospel, Jesus says: “Go sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will

have treasure in Heaven; then, come follow me.”

Have you considered answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the

Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks the rich young man to give away all that he has in order to have treasure in Heaven. But he is unable to free himself from his possessions, and

so he goes sadly away. Does what I own keep me from following Jesus?

Join us on this Monday, Oct.15th, beginning at 3:30 p.m. in the church (during the Hour of Mercy) as we pray the stations of

the cross for the souls in Purgatory. We will start with the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, prayed for the souls in purgatory, followed by “The Way of the Cross for the Holy Souls in Purgatory,” by Susan Tassone (extra books are available.)

All are welcome!

Society of St. Vincent de Paul Donation Opportunity Our Local Schnucks Store in Dekalb has chosen the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) as the October

recipient of their “Bags 4 My Cause” program featuring the Hunger Bag. Every time someone purchases the

Hunger r eusable bag for $2.99, Schnucks will donate $1 to SVDP as a way to suppor t hunger relief.

Not only does the purchase of the bag result in a $1 donation from Schnucks, the program also encourages

the increased use of reusable bags to help reduce the use and eventual disposal of paper and/or plastic bags.

This program runs during the entire month of October. Please consider purchasing a Hunger reusable bag

when you visit Schnucks during October. The SVDP thanks you for your continued support of our mission to

help those who are most needy in our community!

Jesus said "Whatever you did for one of the least of my brothers, you did for me." [Matt. 25:40] Participating in the St. Vincent de Paul Society Winter Clothing Drive is one way you can help the less fortunate.

If you have WINTER CLOTHING, coats, hats, gloves, boots or other warm clothing items that are clean and in good condition, please consider dropping them off at the Ministry Center Cafeteria at the Fisk Street entrance before and after the Sunday morning masses on November 4th. There is a great need for infant and young children's clothing. We regret that we do not have any space to store clothing items. THIS IS THE ONLY DAY WE CAN ACCEPT CLOTHING DONATIONS.

If you are compliant with the Rockford Diocese Safe Environment Program requirements we would ask you to consider volunteering to help with the unpacking and sorting of the clothing donations on Sunday, November 4th. If you can spare a half hour or more between 8:15 a.m. and 1 p.m. we would be most grateful for your assistance. To volunteer, please call Cathleen Finnan at 815-758-6328 and leave a message by Friday, November 2nd.

Please extend an invitation to anyone you know that FREE CLOTHING will be made available between 1 and 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 4th.

The Ministry of Care Needs You!!! This ministry involves bringing Holy Communion to home-bound, facility bound, or hospitalized people. It is a life-changing experience, to be a part of these lives. The privilege of serving them is rewarding. And never say, “Oh, I couldn’t do that!” Don’t underestimate God’s gifts!

We need a person, to offer communion at Kishwaukee Hospital every other Tuesday. This service takes about one hour or so. The time of day is flexible, according to the minister’s schedule.

If you are interested in serving, or you have questions and con-cerns, PLEASE call Chris Hacker at (815) 758-5625. Training and mentoring provided. Please continue to pray for our parish-ioners who cannot join us at mass, and for their families and care providers.

We have a deal for you! Coordinator: Ministry of Care

We are in need of a coordinator for the Ministry of Care. This ministry brings communion and friendship to the homebound, hospitalized, or residents of nursing facilities. Perhaps you are drawn to the ministry, but cannot serve as a minister due to work or health challenges… Here is a necessary component of this vital outreach that can be done at ones convenience! Please consider this service to the parish community. The posi-

tion requires little time, but the rewards keep on giving. Train-

ing and mentoring is provided. If curious, call Chris Hacker

815-758-5625 with questions. Notify the church office if you

are interested. Please pray for those who are served.

St. Ignatius of Antioch

Feast Day – October 17 He was born May 15, 35 AD in Syria. Probably a convert to Christianity and perhaps a disciple of St. John. Legend has him appointed and consecrated bishop of Antioch by St. Peter, after Peter left the deathbed of Evodius, previous bishop of the see. He governed for forty years but was arrested during the persecution of Emperor Trajan and sent to Rome. The ship he was sent on traveled on the coast of Asia Minor, then Greece, and finally reached Rome. He was greeted by crowds of Christians wherever the ship touched port, but received ill treatment from his captors. He urged Christians of his day to be united in the faith they had received from the apostles. No false teaching should lead them astray. Jesus Christ was their Lord. They were to listen to their bishops He arrived in Rome on December 20, 108 AD, the last day of the public games, was escorted to the amphitheater, and was killed by lions in the arena. A detailed description of the trip to Rome is provided by Agathopus and a deacon named Philo, who were with him, and who wrote at his dictation of seven letters of instruction on the Church, marriage, the Trinity, the Incarnation, Redemption, and the Eucharist, which are among the most important of the earliest Christian writings. He is often surnamed Theophorus (God bearer).
