School Happenings Thank you to everyone that participated in the kickoff for Catholic Schools Week. The parents that spoke were phenomenal, and the students did a great job participating in all parts of the Mass. Thank you to every person that supports St. Mary of the Woods School and Trinity High School. The contributions made, prayers said, and love shown for our schools is amazing. This community is the best!
St. Mary of the Woods Middle School Academic Team hosted the District Governor’s Cup. The students performed well very well! EJ Stauffer placed 3rd in Science and 5th in Math. Shealyn Mills placed 3rd in Language Arts and 5th in Composition. Aaron Wright placed 3rd in Arts and Humanities, while Thomas Jarboe placed 4th in Language Arts. Thank you to Mrs. Allie McDaniel and Mr. Jason Johnson for coaching this team. We are proud of you all!
Never underestimate your ability to influence! My children asked me, “Why do we always sit on the right in the front of church?” I told them that I did not really know other than my Grandpa Evans and Grandma Mills both sat on that side (my Grandma Evans and Grandpa Mills may have as well, but passed when I was young and I do not remember). Then my mom and dad did and now we do. I doubt my grandparents ever thought where they sat would influence five generations later (my great nephew sits there now too). Know that where people sit in church is not important, just that they attend and participate! All the things that are important like prayer, Mass attendance, loving one another, forgiveness, etc. are important. We must do our best to influence the future generations to continue what is truly important, choosing discipleship! Prayers for all as we continue on our path to Him. God Bless You All, Emily Hernandez Principal St. Mary of the Woods School/Trinity High School

Men’s Group Relaunching! You and I know that we are made for more; for glory, and that God has a mission for our lives. With the constant demands of the world, responsibilities of life and never ending distractions, it is easy for that call to glory to be snuffed out. Proverbs 27:17 states, “As iron sharpens iron, so man sharpens his fellow man.” Next meeting is February 19th from 7:30 till 9 PM. The Men’s Group meets on the third Wednesday of every month at the KC Hall (7812 Hayes Station Road.) This group is open to ALL men of our community.

Sunday Connection Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the temple. The Presentation, which is celebrated 40 days after Christmas, is not mentioned in the other Gospels. Only Luke tells the story, most likely because he writes for Gentile Christians who are not familiar with the Jewish rite of presentation and purification. In addition, the intent of Luke’s Gospel is to show that God’s promise to Israel, fulfilled in Jesus, extends to Gentiles.
Luke recognizes Joseph and Mary as faithful Jews who bring Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem. Here they present their firstborn son to the Lord. Jesus is thus consecrated as required by the Law of Moses. Present in the temple at this time are Simeon and Anna. Both are awaiting the restoration of God’s rule in Israel.
Simeon had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would see Christ the Lord, the Messiah, before he died. The holy man immediately recognized the infant Jesus as the promised Savior, a “light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” Anna also recognized Jesus as the fulfillment of the promise of redemption and spoke about him to all.

BULLETIN BITES Mary and Joseph took Jesus up to Jerusalem
to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord
How was your Christmas? Did you get what you wanted? Was everybody happy with the gifts you gave them? Have you returned all of the presents you received that you did not want or that do not fit? Did you spend some time Jesus? Do you spend some time to reflect on and appreciate His role and importance in our lives? Do we understand that a constantly growing intimate relationship with Jesus is a tremendous gift? St. Luke tells us about Simeon, a righteous and devout man who awaited the consolation of Israel. Eight days after the first Christmas, the Birth of Jesus, Joseph and Mary brought Him to the Temple to perform the custom of the law. Simeon realizes that the Lord had fulfilled His promise to let Simeon see Christ the Lord. When Simeon saw the child Jesus he knew he had received a tremendous gift. We have received the gift of awareness of who and what Jesus is in our lives. A constantly growing intimate relationship with Jesus is the real gift of Christmas. It is a gift we should cherish and share with others every day of the year.
