19 April 2018 Term 2: Week 1
PRINCIPAL Mr Matthew Beacroft
Dear Parents and Friends,
We hope you enjoyed a relaxing and wonderful break over the Easter Holidays. Part of my holiday’s was spent watching the Commonwealth Games and the inspirational feats conducted by the wonderful athletes from around the world. A special congratulations to Ms Crystal Cooke who volunteered across the two weeks supporting swimming and diving.
Staff Announcement
We welcome Mrs Clare Collins as our new Year Two teacher. Clare is an experienced educator who has worked in a number of settings including Sydney, Brisbane and most recently Singapore and will work in Year Two on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Clare replaces Mrs Josephine Hill who has left our school to take a teacher librarian role at St Joseph’s Bardon. We thank Mrs Hill for her significant contribution to our school and wish her well in the future. We also wish Mrs Biddy Seymour well in her retirement as she finishes up as our school music teacher to spend more time with her grandchildren. Mrs Lauren Veling, who is our current art teacher will now also teach music across the school.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Across first term you would have had opportunities informally to discuss your child’s learning and development with your classroom teacher. As we begin term 2 the class teachers at St Mary of the Cross would like the opportunity to discuss with you the progress for your child academically and socially. The formal representation of how your child/ren are going will be sent home in a report at the end of Term 2. This fifteen minute interview is to discuss student academic achievement, effort and application, social skills and behaviour during the first term from both the teacher’s and parent’s perspectives. Teachers and parents meet together to identify what is going well and goal setting for term 2 and beyond. The interview is an opportunity for purposeful discussion and to develop the partnership between home and school.
In order to provide this interview opportunity, we have set aside time on Tuesday 1st May and Thursday 3rd May. It is expected that all parents will arrange a time to meet with the class teacher or their child/ren.
To book a Parent Teacher Interview you will log onto Parent Teacher Online or PTO. This service allows parents and carers to log in online and make bookings for teacher interviews. A ’how to use’ the PTO booking system will be emailed and sent home as a hard copy at the beginning of next week. If you have questions about the parent/teacher interviews, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or the office.
DISCO
The inclement weather last term meant that we had to postpone our school disco. Please ensure you have your dancing shoes ready for our Disco on Friday 11th May, 5.30 – 7pm.
Sports News
Next week as part of our mindfulness all students will be part of a yoga lesson run by Urban Bliss Yoga. The yoga movements are completed in a story narrative which ensures engagement and enjoyment for all ages. The students will have a follow up yoga lesson in week 7.
This term in week 3 our students will run their Cross Country races at Windsor Park. A timetable will be sent home in week 3. The students will be running practice races several times across the next couple of weeks.
Brisbane Roar Soccer
This term all students will be involved in soccer skill lessons and games run by Brisbane Roar staff. These lessons will occur in PE lessons on a Wednesday.
Netball Queensland Catholic Cup
This term the girls in years 3-6 will begin training for the Queensland Catholic Cup on Monday May 21st at Downey Park. This will see selected students participate in a number of games across the day.
Regards,
Matthew Beacroft

SCHOOL
NOTICES
Dear Parents and Friends,
The Easter holidays have been a welcomed time to recharge our energies for the busy term ahead. It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces for our return to school. The chatter of learning in the classrooms and the enthusiastic involvement in lessons signals that we are ready for a busy term.
Before the holidays we prepared for Easter by journeying through stations, retelling the events of Holy Week. Each scene represented a significant part of the Holy Week story, enabling students to deepen their understanding of the events. The symbols, actions, imagery, words and music presented remind us all of Jesus’ journey during that final week, before we celebrated the Resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday. Easter brings hope, joy and new beginnings and as we begin this new term, let us all be conscious in continuing these sentiments, following Jesus as true disciples.
Caritas: Project Compassion
If you still have donations for Project Compassion please send them into school so that we can add to our final total. Project Compassion through Caritas Australia supports people around the world. Thank you for your support of Project Compassion 2018.
ANZAC Day
On Monday I will attend the ANZAC Commemoration Service for students in ANZAC Square with Ms Parry and the Year 5/6 students. This is always a moving event and one which allows our senior students to experience and better understand the messages of ANZAC day.
In the morning and the evening, we will remember them We will remember them
In life’s comings and goings, we will remember them We will remember them
In the tears and the memories, we will remember them. We will remember them
In the stories and the letters, we will remember them. We will remember them
In the photos and the tributes, we will remember them. We will remember them
In the silence and the stillness, we will remember them We will remember them. Lest we forget.

Dear Parents
I hope you had some quiet time over the holidays. I have not been at school this week, being fortunate enough to be able to take extra quiet time in the form of a retreat. I realise most parents don’t have the opportunity for this luxury. That’s not to deny the need for quiet time in our lives. We need to be as aware of this ‘platter’ as we are of the healthy food pyramid/plate. Before the term gets really busy, it may be worth contemplating the following. I am grateful to Kathleen Mooney, a fellow pastoral worker, for this information, taken from www. drdansiegel.com.
Mary MacKillop would say: “Work on with the means that God has put at your disposal.”
Have a wonderful week, disengaging whatever needs to be adjusted on your platter.
God bless,
Sr Anne Cannon School Pastoral Worker
COLES SPORTS FOR SCHOOLS
We will continue to accept these dockets for another week. We will go close to 20,000 vouchers. SO, a big thank you to all families, friends, Lutwyche Coles shoppers and parishioners for your support.
MILLION STARS FOR PEACE
Our 2017 Year 3/4 with Mrs Morgante contributed stars to this project. It was impossible to find our stars among the millions, but that is part of the message – we will achieve a peaceful world if we all work together.

HEALTHY LUNCHES
While looking at the “Healthy Mind Platter”, it’s also good to remember the healthy food platter. While this is too small to read, it’s worth visiting ‘healthy foods pyramid Australia’ to check it out. The recipe comes from the Heart Foundation and can be used as a dessert served with low-fat custard, or used for lunches.
APPLE AND PEACH FILO PIES
Ingredients 6 granny smith apples, peeled, cored, cut into 1cm wedges 2 tablespoons unsweetened orange juice 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1/4 cup sultanas
8 sheets filo pastry 825g canned peach slices in natural juice, drained, thickly sliced 2 tablespoons margarine spread, melted 2 tablespoons slivered almonds 1 tablespoon icing sugar
Method
1. Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). Combine apple, orange juice, cinnamon, brown sugar and sultanas in a saucepan over medium/high heat. Cover and bring to a simmer. Simmer for 4 to 5 minutes or until apple is tender. Remove from heat.
2. Meanwhile, pat peach dry with paper towel. Add peach to apple mixture. Stir gently to combine. Spoon mixture into 4 x 1¾ cup-capacity ovenproof dishes.
3. Scrunch 2 sheets of pastry together. Place over 1 dish. Repeat with remaining pastry. Drizzle with spread. Sprinkle with almonds and icing sugar. If making for lunches, use greased muffin pans, lining the holes with a folded sheet of pastry under the mixture, then placing more pastry on top to seal the pie.
4. Bake for 10 minutes or until golden. Serve warm if used as dessert, cool on wire rack if preparing for lunches.
