Weekly Message
FEAR NOT; TRUST IN GOD!
Fear cripples us and buries our self
confidence. As sad and shameful as this
may sound, it is true. I was once a victim of
a high school bully. I went to a boarding
school. We had this big guy in my class
who used to bully me simply because I was
more intelligent. He threatened me not to
tell anyone. I was so afraid of him. He would come and collect
my notes which I used in preparing for a test. He would even
take my pen a few minutes before the test and I would have to
find another one. Whenever he looked at me I would be so terri-
fied. My grades started going down, and I was not eating well
again. When I discovered I could die in silence, I decided to talk
to a friend about it. He had a solution from his own experience.
We made friends with a bigger boy in the class who was
stronger than him. He was the best athlete in school. The bully
thought we had told the stronger guy what was happening, and
he became very afraid of us. We would do exactly the same
things he did to me and he will not complain. After a month of
struggling to dodge us and not succeeding, he came with a box
of cookies to plead for forgiveness. Fortunately, we all became
best of friends and promised never to allow such a thing happen
to others in the school.
To live in fear is a terrible experience. In the Gospel reading
today we hear very comforting and strengthening words of Jesus
“Have no fear of men”. Jesus assures us that not even one strand
of our hair can fall off without God’s knowledge and permis-
sion. It is so exciting to know how much God cares about us and
how important we are to him. He tells us how much God values
us. This God, who cares so much about us and loves us beyond
all things, is all-powerful and almighty. He can do all things.
God tells us through prophet Isaiah: “So do not fear, for I am
with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will
strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my
righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). God is not just powerful
but he shares that power with us in love. This is why St. Paul
could say “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens
me” (Philippians 4:13).
Fear is a sign of lack of trust in God. If we trust that God is on
our side, we will realize how powerful we are. “If God is on our
side, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). If I could regain
my self confidence by being close to someone, if I could feel so
protected by the strength of a friend, then with God I have
nothing to fear. No matter what we might be going through in
our lives, if we put our trust in God; trusting in His love for us
and in His power to do all things for us, if it is His will, we will
always live in the joy and freedom of God’s children. For God
did not give us a spirit of fear and timidity but of power, and
love, and sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). Our only fear should be
to lose such a friendship with God. If we understand the power
of the God, we will be so confident even in the face of trials.
Nothing will ever scare us. Nothing will take away our joy and
peace nor dampen our spirit.
In our first reading today, the prophet Jeremiah copes with a difficult life situation, through faith in God and prayer. The
people to whom he ministered rejected his preaching and
planned his downfall. Like Jeremiah we might face some challenges in life, some persons may make life difficult for us, we may work very hard and there seems to be no success. Your friends may turn against you. Your family may not show enough concern and support. Some people may discredit you, plan your downfall, or hate you for no just reason. But we can turn these misfortunes to opportunities to witness to Jesus and show our confidence in the love of God for us. We are witnessing to Jesus by the way we live our lives, coping with any of the problems life throws at us. Jeremiah did not despair. He overcame his fears by trusting in God.
Jesus would say, as he does three times in today’s Gospel, “Do
not be afraid of them….What I say to you in the darkness, speak
in the light” (Matt 10:26-27); “do not be afraid of those who kill
the body but cannot kill the soul” (Matt 10:28); “do not be
afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” (Matt 10:31-
32). Jesus in Gethsemane is our model in coping with the
difficulties of life.
Jesus reminds us too: “Everyone who acknowledges me before
others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father”. In other
words we should be proud that Jesus is on our side. We should
be excited to introduce Him to others as our friend. We should
be very proud of ourselves as friends of Jesus. But unfortunately
in our world today, many people don’t want to be identified
with faith. People see faith as a thing of weakness. Many
Christians are ashamed to identify themselves as believers. Why
would people be shy of being a child of God? Why would
someone see faith as completely private and personal? It is like
someone who is ashamed of his family and background. If we
deny Christ, if we are ashamed of identifying ourselves as
Christians, then we don’t deserve to be called one. Christ
Himself will also deny us in front of His Father in heaven. If
you can be proud of your family and friends, and you are
ashamed of your faith, it is simply because you don’t know
what you’ve got!

ber for a start. It was a beautiful day!

scenes. May God bless and reward all your sacrifices with His
heavenly blessings. Thank y’all!

12th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reading 1: Jeremiah 20:10-13
The Lord is with me, like a mighty champion. God
loves His people, fights for us, protects us, and knows
what is best for us. Let us sing to the Lord, praise the
Lord with the prophet Jeremiah, for He has
rescued the life of the poor from the power of the
wicked. Remember to thank the Lord when He
answers your prayers for deliverance.
Reading 2: Romans 5:12-15
How much did the grace of God and the gracious
gift of the one Jesus Christ overflow for man. St. Paul teaches us that through one man, Adam, sin
entered the world; and through one Man, Jesus Christ,
sin was put to death. Rejoice and be glad, for we
have been delivered from sin and death into His
own wonderful light and to eternal life!
Gospel: Matthew 10:26-33
Jesus said: Fear no one; do not be afraid of those
who can kill the body but cannot kill the soul. God
loves us so much that even the hairs on our head are
counted. Jesus says: Do not be afraid. How we can
be afraid when we have a God Who loves us so
much?

CATHOLIC
CORNER
What are the Synoptic Gospels? The books of Matthew, Mark and Luke are called the
Synoptic Gospels. Synoptic derives from Greek, and
means “similar.” Many of the same parables of Jesus’ life
and ministry are written In these books,. They are
descriptive of people, events, travels, and healings, as
observed by the apostles and others encountered by Jesus.
For example, note a few parables in each:
Story Matthew Mark Luke
Healing of Leper 8:1-4 1:40-45 5:12-16
Christ Stills the Storm 8:28-34 5:1-20 8:26-39*
There are more repeated parables within these books. Since the
three books seem to have a “same view when taken together”*,
scholars have established that Mark was likely the first Gospel.
Matthew and Luke were authored at later dates, and while not
identical accounts they follow the same literary style. Next
week we will see why the Gospel of John is not included as a
Synoptic gospel, and what is unique about this Book. * www.christianity.stackexchange.com

Mensaje del Párroco
NO TEMÁIS; ¡CONFIANZA EN DIOS!
El miedo nos paraliza y hunde nuestra
confianza en nosotros mismos. Tan triste y
vergonzoso como esto puede sonar, es
verdad.
otra. Siempre que me miraba estaba tan aterrorizado. Mis notas
comenzaron a bajar, y yo no estaba comiendo bien otra vez.
pasando en nuestras vidas, si ponemos nuestra confianza en Dios;
