Weekly Message

Nations shall behold your vindica-tion, and all the kings your glory.

— Isaiah 62:2

“They have no wine”

The Baptism of the Lord, which we celebrated last Sunday, was the official end of the Christmas Season and also the beginning of the Ordinary Time of the Liturgical Year. Today is the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. Our gospel reading from John relates the story of the wedding that Jesus attended at Cana in Galilee. This, in some way, was also a revelation of Jesus to the people who were at the wedding because he used the occasion to perform his first public miracle. We, therefore, continue the theme of

the Epiphany and the Baptism as Jesus is revealed to the world.

So, what was revealed about Jesus in this story? It seems to me that the scripture revealed to us a merciful God who is ready to even change his plans to accommodate our plans. The couple had no wine, and so Mary went to Jesus for help. Jesus told his mother: “My hour has not yet come.” De-spite this, Jesus went on to perform the miracle. He changed water into wine to remove the shame the couple would have felt at their wedding reception. Notice also that this miracle came about at the intervention of Mary, his mother. Mary believed that her son could help, and so she told the attendants to do whatever Jesus asked of them. Jesus responded to the needs of this couple by fast-tracking his “hour.”

Mary, as a mother, was very observant, caring, considerate, compassionate and kind. She was al-ways looking for the best in the people around her. These qualities helped her to notice the need of the couple at the wedding feast. She observed that the wine being served at the feast was running out. She quickly ran to Jesus and begged him to see what he could do to forestall a potential shame on the hosts. Mary has a special place in the life of the Church. One important role she continues to play is that of an observant and caring mother. She is ready to plead with Jesus to assist her chil-dren in their needs, even before they approach her for assistance. The only thing she asks is for each of us to do whatever Jesus tells us to do. Obedience to Jesus is what Mary demands from us.

One thing that we cannot overlook in the miracle at Cana in Galilee is that the jars that were used to hold the water that Jesus turned into wine ordinarily contained water for ablution or ritual cleaning. People ordinarily didn’t drink from the jars, but rather used the water for cleaning the dust off their hands and feet. Jesus turned the water in those jars into wine for the delight of the people. I think this points to the mercy of God, who changes our dirt and misery into grace and blessings.

As we begin this year, let us open our doors to Mary and Jesus so that they will not only visit us, but also remain and live with us. Where Mary is invited, Jesus is also present, as in this wedding in Cana. Mary takes note of those things that may be running out in the lives of those who welcome her, and she quickly turns to Jesus for such persons even before they ask for assistance. Jesus will perform miracles in our lives if we open up to him and also do whatever he tells us. May his word remain with us this year as we ask for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary!

God is Attentive to Those Who Are Suffering

Ivana Meshell, Director of Adult Faith Formation

The Lord hears the cry of the poor. —Psalm 34

We are very much aware that all around us is human need, including our own needs. The poor are certainly those in material poverty but also include all of us who are lacking things necessary to living a life worthy of the dignity of the human person. When we lack appropriate working condi-tions, suitable education, good health, strong moral judgment, peace, and security, to some extent, we suffer poverty. Many of us come to Sunday Mass with lives full of need, and on our knees, we ask God to help us in our suffering. When we ask for relief, the Lord hears us. The book of Sirach tells us, “The one who serves God willingly is heard; his petition reaches the heavens” (Sirach 35:16-17).

If God hears and cares, then his response must take place not in someplace far beyond us; rather, it takes place within a human context—within our everyday lives and experiences. For centuries, the Church has enu-merated what is known as the corporal (bodily) and spiritual works of mercy. They are the actions we show to one another to help alleviate human suffering. They are the means by which God attends to our sufferings and hears the “cry of the poor.” God indeed “hears our cry.” We ourselves are the means by which God offers his compassion to those who are suffering. Ours are the only hands Christ has in the world to extend his love. St. Teresa of Avila (1515–1582) helps us to understand this:

Christ has no body but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours.

Yours are the eyes with which he looks with compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good.

Yours are the hands with which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body.

Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours.

Yours are the eyes with which he looks compassion on this world. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

In our parish, there are many people who are practicing the corporal and spiritual works of mercy in our par-ish, as well as many who are in need of the hands, feet, and eyes by which Christ blesses his people—by which God responds to human need. Let us pray that human suffering will be alleviated in our own communi-ty through the hands Christ has left to do his work with an “attitude of gratitude.” This Year of Mercy offers a unique opportunity for us to live the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy in a special way. Let us actively seek ways to show mercy at home and to those around us where we live, work, and play. May God bless us and bless others through us during this Holy Year of Mercy.

—Padre Felix
