Active and contemplative. At work and at rest. These are dynamics we all face in our lives, and if we're honest, we might not always balance perfectly! In this Sunday's Gos-pel, our daily tensions play out in two sisters. Mary "sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak." Mar-tha, on the other hand, is "burdened with much serving." This, as it turns out, is not necessarily "the better part." All of us reading this have some sort of labor we engage in. We have different trades or careers. We have responsibilities as family members, some of which may take up most of our time. In the time of Scripture, showing hospitality to guests was one of the most important values in society. Our work is important. Jesus himself spent decades as a carpenter. So what's the problem with Martha? Martha is bur-dened, anxious, and worried. Not only that, but she resents her sister's choice. "Tell her to help me," she demands of Jesus. How easy it is to get very busy doing good things. We need to provide for our families and plan for retirement. We need to make sure children are clothed, fed, and educated. Our committees, ministries, and sports schedules need to stay on track. However, without a balance of work with rest, without contemplation in the midst of our action, we will miss the point. While many parts are required for our life in the world to function, the better part is our relationship with God. This week, make time in your busy schedule to sit at Jesus' feet. Maybe this is 20 minutes with Scripture, participating in a daily Mass, or a quiet walk alone in the park. Receive what Christ wants to speak to you.

Everyday Stewardship When we realize we are going to have company, my family and I swing into mo-tion with a frenzy. No dust shall be present for our guests. The bathrooms will be spotless and toilets worthy of the name "throne." We must run to the store so that an endless supply of refreshments and snacks greet our distinguished guests. We never want to be seen as bad hosts and, of course the real reason for all the com-motion, we never want to be seen in our natural habitat of messy rooms and bar-ren kitchens. But what is real hospitality, a necessity for encouraging good stewardship and developing a sense of belonging? In the Gospel of Luke, Mary knew. Martha was so busy preparing and serving, while Mary simply sat with Jesus and listened to him. This is not to say that she did not prepare for her Guest by making a proper place for gathering. But when a guest is already received, true hospitality begins with being present to and engaging him or her. Part of the message in this story is that we all need to pause and listen to the good news that Jesus preaches, but also we can learn a lesson about good hospitality from it as well. How many times have we been more concerned with appearances and outward things than what we have inside each of us to share? Christian hospitality calls for the Jesus in me to meet with the Jesus in you. We are called to be fully present to one another, with no distractions of technology or the world standing in our way. This is choosing "the better part." For what does it profit a man if he has all the beer and wine in the world, and a spotless home with the greatest of technology, and loses his attention in the conversation with his brother or sister to the game on television? (Or something like that!) Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS © Liturgical Publications Inc

Many years ago, when I was a mother with four chil-dren ranging from 11 to 25, and the frenzied activity that implies, I had three guests leaving after a two-week visit, and another three arriving the next day for four weeks. It was an operation similar to D-Day...but I will spare you the details. I was determined to be with our Lord, and as I stum-bled into the church, I said to Him, “Dear Jesus, I am killing myself trying to see you.” He replied, “It is not you who want to see Me; it is I who want to see you.” Had I not gone to be with Him in the midst of my chaos, I would have never known how very much Our Lord lovingly appreciates our hurried efforts and even our ungracious words. How can we possibly keep away from a Tremen-dous Lover* who dies to see us? Mercedes Aris

They're there when we need them, and if we're honest, we need them for a lot of things! This week, many Span-ish-speaking countries celebrate Día de los Abuelos. The celebration is held on July 26, the feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne, parents of Mary and grandparents of Jesus. In our mobile society, many grandparents may be geographically disconnected to their children. Other grandparents have even more opportunities to be close to their grandchildren, as their children continue working and are in need of nearby childcare support. Whatever the situation, grandparents are essen-tial to the growth and development of children. They provide a warm, for-giving presence. Rarely the discipli-narian, grandparents are another re-minder of the gentle mercy of God. As children age, they begin to appre-ciate grandparents as people with stories to tell and wisdom to impart. How can you show gratitude for the grandparents in your life today?

On July 24, we celebrate the feast of a saint who ran way from home! St. Sharbel was born Yussef Antoun Makhluf in the Lebanese countryside in the mid-1800's. His life was a sim-ple one, attending school, caring for the family cow, and taking long soli-tary walks to contemplate the beau-ty of creation. When his family pres-sured him to marry, the young man quietly left home without a word. He traveled on foot to a nearby monas-tery. When his family caught wind of where he had gone, the decision had been made. After being ordained a priest, St. Sharbel still showed a longing for solitude. He received permission to become a hermit. His reputation for holiness, however, led to a busier life than he might have liked! Many people sought him for advice and blessings. St. Sharbel Makhluf's life reminds us that a life of prayer -- even an unconventional one -- is attractive!

—Miguel Arias, © Copyright, J. NO ESTÉS ANSIOSO

© Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
