    JULY 14, 2013 . FIFTEETH SUDAY I ORDIARY TIME

Lawyers don't always fare so well in popular culture. Even the

television shows that exalt some aspects of the legal profession (like Law& Order or The Good Wife) also have some lawyers that are less than no-ble in both their personal and professional lives. Even in Shakespeare'stime this ambivalence toward lawyers was evident in Henry VI, Part 2when Dick the butcher, one of the rebels, proposes to kill all the lawyerssince by their arguments they can have a man condemned as easily asfreed. Still, every day people turn to lawyers seeking their help with a hostof problems. The love-hate relationship continues.

In the Gospel this weekend, the scholar of the law is looking for theway to life. His question is sincere. He is trying to understand what is re-quired of him. He can quote the law, indeed, probably even lives by it. Butthe question of who is a neighbor is one of legal precision. The interpreta-

tion of the Mosaic law based the fact of one being a neighbor on a cove-nantal relationship. Those who worshipped the one God were consideredas one's neighbor. In the time of Jesus this narrow interpretation was be-ing reconsidered. Some religious scholars suggested that a more univer-sal application was needed, while others held to the tradition that Samaritans, foreigners, and those outsidethe law were not neighbors under the law. Jesus makes his position clear, although by coming at it from theother direction. It is the Samaritan who shows himself to be a neighbor.

Maybe that is where the argument lies for us today. We cannot define with legal precision who is go-ing to be a neighbor to us. All we can do is decide to be neighborly toward others, that is, to show them thevery love with which we love ourselves. And then rely on God's mercy that someone will be there for us as aneighbor in our time of need.

All Weekends beginning May 18/19 through Sept. 7/8 Join the parish community for Mass See Gods beauty in the sacred statues and artwork Experience the culture and history of the diocese During this time of pilgrimage, celebrate the Sacrament of Ronciliation at any local church in the diocese

Reflect on your own spiritual journeyVisit one of the parishes listed to receive your Pilgrim passpThen, travel to the remaining parishes to have your passportstamped, including: St. Mary, Elyria St. Mary, Painesville SMary, Wooster St. Sebastian, Akron Complete your journey the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Downtown ClevelandThe first 1,200 to complete their pilgrimage with a fully stampepassport, receive a commemorative Year of Faith medal blessby Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. Most of us are familiar with thidea of making a pilgrimage. People have been taking such joneys for thousands of years. For Christians, some sites becampilgrimage destinations because they were important in the lifJesus, like Jerusalem or Bethlehem. Others, like Lourdes or Gdalupe, are connected with the Virgin Mary. During the Year oFaith, several churches have been designated by Bishop Rich

Lennon as pilgrimage sites in the Diocese of Cleveland. Whymake the journey to these places? One important reason is because we hold these places to be sacred. Because of their his

we expect to encounter God there. They are places where itseems as if there is less distance between us and God, as if tis a more direct connection with God. When we walk through door, we transition into a new place where we sense that therbetter communication between heaven and earth. For religiopeople, sacred space focuses us, giving us a fixed point towa

which we can re-orient ourselves. When we do this, we have opportunity for transcendence, to rise up to meet God who codown to meet us. For more information visit us online at
